~The BOT Battalion~ BOTS On The Run

Just posting again because I somehow got unsubscribed from the thread. I meant to fix that when I posted before but forgot.

Jodi - Congrats on the Hartford 1/2 and it sounds like a great finish line spread. Hoping you're feeling okay about Sparky's great new home. Enjoy the taper before NYC:banana:

Lou - Sweet time on LBI :cool1: Glad it was a great day for you as well and hoping you're well into taper mode by now:cloud9:. I can't root for your Phillies if they play the Yankees:confused3 since my kids and their father would take issue:)

Howard - Congrats on both Ridgefield and RFTT:yay:. Hoping Cam's enjoying the new car today:lovestruc.

Jen - Loved the picture of you and Chester at RFTT! Hoping you had an awesome trip:goodvibes.

Chester - Glad to hear Hawaii training is going really well:cheer2:. Great pics from WDW!

CindyLou - Best of luck this weekend:banana: Hoping it's just the normal pre-race phantom stuff going on and that the forecast holds out for you

Matt - Sorry to hear Baltimore was brutal for you and I'm sure you'll shake it off and bang it out in Richmond:yay:

Mike - Congrats to you and Kathy for successful ventures in OH:cheer2: :Loved the pics Kathy posted on FB:thumbsup2

Colleen - Happy taper and I hope Lauren's feeling better:wizard:

Dave - Best of luck at TOT:cheer2:

As for 2010, WDW will be my 9th marathon so I was looking for a great race for my 10th. As of today, I am planning on the Flying Pig on 5/2. MCM is a great time and Toronto sounds cool as well. I'd love Seattle R&R but it's 6/27 and I tentatively will be in WDW. I'd bag the Pig for that if it came to it:laughing:. My TOP vote is Vegas in December but how does that work with WDW in Januarypopcorn:: Matt might be young enough to pull that out but the over 40 crowd:rolleyes1 could be deterred. San Antonio is a want on my list and I agree that R&R always puts on a good show.

I am running fairly regularly, in addition to yoga, but I need to work on the LR's regularly since I'm looking at WDW in a few months:rolleyes:. It's been great living vicariously through you all and I really, really appreciate that at the moment:grouphug:

See the good part about doing two marathons so close together is that you only need to train for one race, but you get to run two! The bad part is that there isn't enough time between marathons to forgot how long they are :-)

Lou Congrats on the PR. LBI sounds like an interesting race, 18 miles is such an odd distance that I'm intrigued and sort of want to run it next year. A free buffet at the end is even better.
Matt - You and Cindy should consider LBI next year. The nice thing about this race is that its a perfect training run for a November marathon. My bus to the start was filled with NYC marathoners. I missed your race report yesterday and just read though it. Very interesting. You and I run very similar paces so you got me all worried about NYC. I actually had the same problem you described when I ran WDW in 2008 (2nd marathon). I drank WAY too much Powerade early in the race and it hit me real hard around mile 18. I had this "sloshy" feeling in my stomach the rest of the race. I drank little or no sports drinks when I train so I think I'll avoid them as much as possible at NYC. One nice thing about LBI is that they had Gatorade after Mile 12 but it was very watered down. I think that actually helped me on Sunday. That weather in Balt. didn't sound too good either. You got through it and I'm sure you'll be running with the 3:50 pace group again at the next race but you'll have more experience.

Sara - Lets just hope the Yanks lose to Anaheim so you can cheer for the Phils.

Congrats to all who ran this weekend-- it sounds really busy for the Bots.

Matt: I'm impressed at your ability to stick out a tough race, it sounds like it was brutal.

I'm finally settling back in after a quick weekend trip for Race for the Taste. The weekend was lots of fun but now I'm totally exhausted. I got almost no sleep on Friday night-- stayed with friends who live close to the airport so I wouldn't have to drive as much prior to my 6:00am flight. It would have been a good idea had I not stayed up half the night chatting and playing games with everyone. The guy next to me on the flight down was sort of creepy so I never really felt comfortable sleeping on the plane to make up for my Friday night stupidity. Sat was a good day overall, how can a day at Disney not be good :confused3 The packet pick up was really just that, no expo at all. The WISH meet at Boardwalk was nice and fairly well attended then it was off for a quick dinner at Morocco with Corinna, one of my Ohana teammates. I tried to get to sleep early but it wound up still being around 10:30pm.

Race morning it was hot and humid, I'm talking roughly 95% humidity where you feel sticky just standing there. I got to EPOCT parking lot at around 5:30-6ish and met Chester and Chet in the parking lot. We took the bus over to WWoS and hung out with other WISHers before the race. The race itself was fine-- there were no characters out on the course which disappointed me a bit because I had decide with the awful temperatures this was not to be a PR setting event for me so I might as well stop and get pictures. I felt truly awful the last 3 miles but finished the race without too much problem. The post race picnic was pretty fun-- samplings from food and wine fest and ice cold soda.

I spent a few hours later in the day floating in the lazy river at Blizzard Beach then went to Hollywood Studios to draw characters in the animation studio and ride Toy Story before catching my flight home. I got home at about 1:30am then had to get up at 6:30am to be at work. Butch and I are heading back for another weekend to do ToT-- I'll just try to sleep a bit more beforehand.

Jen - EWWW!! that sounds like a heinous, humid run! Wouldn't want to do that one this year. Nice way to stick it out. WISH I was going down to TOT, too.

Interested to see what Disney Enuduracne is going to release tomorrow re: the new fall race. Seems like it's going to be a 1/2 marathon. huh. I'll leave it up to you guys.

Was digging the notion of a Rhode Island Marathon, until I read the reviews of it on marathonguide.com. Uh, NOT!:scared1:

CindyLou - Not long now!!:scared1::banana:

Mike - My best 1/2 is 1:59:49, or something just under 2 hours like that. That'll never happen again :lmao:.

Colleen - Did you get that 20 miler in?

Sara - Nice to see you back in these parts, pardner :flower3:.

Been running the way I should...it was cold this a.m., like 34 or something :headache:. NO, I'm not complaining.

Hi everyone! Sorry it's been a few days since I've posted. I did in fact read everything I missed and am caught up.

Matt~ Great effort to finish what you started in Baltimore. That is a respectable time for the conditions and what you endured during the run. You are very welcome for the lasagne before the Philly race. We had such a great time with everyone. That get together filled our house with friendship. I really enjoyed that evening and the whole weekend.

Cindy~ Great job on your race too!!!

Mike~ Great effort on you and Kathy's part at the Towpath run. I am always impressed at your level of fitness and speed. I am not worthy. Kathy is gaining ground on you and racking up successful runs all the time. Please congratulate her for me.

Jen~ Welsome home from Hades! It felt like it down there, didn't it? Race day afternoon had a heat index of 105!

My mini-race report:

We flew in on Friday night, rented our wheels and made it over to Beach Club Villas. We met Lily and Ted at Beaches and Cream and were soon joined by Rhonda and Michael. Cam and I had an over due dinner (around 9:30 pm) and the others had dessert.

In the morning we went with Rhonda, Michael, Lily and Ted to breakfast at Olivia's at Old Key West. After breakfast, we went back to BCV to get our car then made our way over to Wide World of Sports to the Expo for packet pick up. The Expo could have been handled with a drive through. No expo to speak of just packet pick up and maybe one or two booths. We ran into Bill and Lynda and their two sons there and then Jen as we were on our way out.

We ended up going to Downtown Disney later to get our Annual Passes reprinted and did a bit of shopping with the others. We lounged around the pool for a while too.. it was relaxing, but very hot. I really didn't sleep too well on Saturday night, I fell asleep late and we were up at 3:50 am to be outside by 5 am to catch a ride over to Epcot with Rhonda, Michael and Lily.

On Sunday morning walking out of BCV was like walking into a blanket of humidity. It was in the low to mid-70's at 5 am (still dark) and 94% humidity. It was drippy sweat hot without even running. We made our way to Epcot and jumped on a bus to the start at DWWoS. The start was not crowded, there were not formal corrals, just some pace signs to line up near. I started near Matt Wilson, Michael, Rhonda and some others.

I took off in a pack of folks and then tried to make my way through the congestion. I figured that this was "only 6.2 miles" and I could go hard for a while. Wrong.. by mile three I was slowing down and needing to breath more effectively. I didn't carry Gatorade ot Powerade so I stopped at most of the water stops. It was oppressively hot, probably the hottest race I've ever run in. The other second hottest was the Disney Marathon in 2008. That was a barn burner too.

My knee which still hurt (from the Ridgefield Half the weekend before) was not an issue during the race. The year old, almost forgetten plantar faciitus kicked up a tiny bit, but it wasn't an issue either.

Here are my splits and pace, etc.:

Miles: 6.28
Time: 58:32
Pace: 9:20
Splits: 8:26, 8:28, 9:03, 9:53, 10:25, and 9:53

I had to take several "walk to catch my breath" breaks, but they lasted no more than 15 or 20 quick paces. My goal (stated before hand) was to break 60 minutes, which I did.

After the race, I stood waiting for Cam to finish with a lot of other WISHers. We wer so hot we literally had sweat dripping off our bodies - after we had "cooled off". The tasting area was good, the food was tasty and the WISH company was great as always.

I am glad I ran this last of the RFTT's and that I had an opportunity to see so many great people again.

I have the Marine Corps Marathon coming up on 10/25. I have just began my leg exercises and hope they'll help leading up to the race.

I welcome a talk about a group race. The only commitments I have for 2010 are the Disney Marathon in January and the Delaware Half in May. If I can run the Caesar Rodney Half in March I'll do that one also.

Lou~ Should we get everyone here to Wilmington for the Caesar Rodney Allen Ripey Race?

Have a great Thursday everyone!

:grouphug:

Howard

Good Morning Bots,

Howard: Good job at RFTT despite the weather. Glad the knee didn't bother you. Hope the PF goes away soon.

Jodi: Pretty wise of you to check out the reviews on Marathonguide. I just picked it because I like Newport. After reading the review, unless they change the course I think I'd skip it. Who needs hills at mile 25? Glad you are doing your running.

Jen: Glad you had fun in FLA, sorry it was so exhausting. It's great that you'll be going back so soon for ToT.

Lou: Glad your Phillies have done so well. It's pretty sad around here without the Sox in anymore, and my poor Mets, I can't even think about them. I hope you are enjoying your taper.

Matt: Hope the recovery is going well.

Sara: Glad that you are able to run regularly. I look forward to meeting you in January.

Cindy: Hope the 16 goes well this weekend. It's great that you don't have to decide anything about Richmond right away, but can see how you feel.

I feel like I have a cold coming on, but am battling it ferociously. I am downing the vitamin C and zinc, drinking lots of tea, gargling with salt water. Anything that might help. My DH came home with a cold yesterday. I am scheduled for one last speed workout today. The weather is only in the 40's today so should be just like race day, although there's a 40% chance of rain for Sunday. I know I can't do anything about the weather, just trying to figure out what to wear. What would you do if you were running in 40 degree rain? I'm thinking I don't want a rain jacket because I'll just end up sweating so much I'll be just as wet as if I didn't have a jacket. I might wear a throw away poncho to stand around at the start. We are able to stay inside an arena until 15 minutes before the race, so it won't be too bad. Lots to think about anyway.

Have a great day.
Cindy

Cindy: good luck keeping the germs at bay-- I hope you stay well. I'm contemplating putting myself in a bubble for the week before the Disney Marathon.

Howard: Welcome home. It was good to see someone else ran into trouble with the sticky weather, makes me feel a bit better about my slowness the last 3 miles.

Part of my exhaustion was my 6 year old waking up at 3am with ear pain the day after I got home-- it was a long night  She is now feeling better and I'm back on track with training. Looking forward to the announcement of the new fall race...

Holy Moly, NYC marathon in 17 days!!!!1:scared1:

20 really ugly miles yesterday, but it's in the books.

Did you all see the official announcement? October 2, 2010 a night-time half marathon. The idea of a new course sounds interesting (if true), and the Halloween Family 5k sounds interesting too.

Good golly I've been busy. Sorry about the all-about me post, but I wanted to fill everyone in on something. I was chatting with Jodi on FB about this earlier today. So I've worked in college/university settings all my career. It's taken me this long to make the connection, "hey, we have an athletic program here. Hey, there's trainers in the athletic program. Hey, maybe I could talk to them about my shins." So I contacted them yesterday, and they said "sure, we can take a look at your leg." I do some walking for them in my bare feet, show them my running shoes, and show them my inserts. They instantly say, "why did they give you these inserts?" To make a long story short, they think I have the wrong inserts, and that's what is making my lower legs hurt. She said for me to stop running for a week, come down and get some treatment for the pain, do some cross-training, and try different inserts.

Hmmmm, maybe diagnosing yourself isn't the best idea...

Hmmmm...I dunno. popcorn:: I was hoping it'd be a Halloween themed 1/2 marathon. Food & Wine???? So that means we go to the night time after hours "party" all hot, dripping & sweaty (not to mention stinking) straight after the race. And how much will THAT be :headache:$$? Sure, they charge us to get in there so they can charge us stoopid prices for those little morsels of food @ Food & Wine, when they know we're ravenously hungry.

Boy, they really are marketing geniuses.

Cindylou - I've had cold races and rainy races, but never the combo platter. Don't forget the value of a big homemade trash bag pancho for hanging around the start. Good Luck!!

Jodi - Disney does seem to love the post race party for trapping you into parting with more of the dough, don't they. Still...

Dave - Way to take advantage of the resources around you.

Am I the only fool that runs with the inserts that come with the shoes?

Howard and Jen - It's really easy to forget how miserable it is to run in those jungle-like conditions once the weather gets cool. Nice job on sweating it out.

Colleen - Fantabulous effort for knocking 20 out. Have you picked out your urine-proof running gear yet?

Sara - Welcome back!

Lou - Cliff Lee, CC Sabathia, Victor Martinez, and on and on. At least I have the Browns. Oh, nevermind. :headache:

Rest day for me today. We'll see what the weatherman allows tomorrow.

Good Evening,

Nice blog, Dave. Really makes me wish I were there (inspite of the heat).

I was very proud of myself this morning. Not because I did my 3rd 20 miler in 4 weeks (although the run was pretty good), but because I went out at all. It was all rainy and cold and just plain yucky out. It would have been much easier to curl up on the couch with a blanket and take a nap.

Come to think of it, that sounds pretty good right now.:thumbsup2

Did you all see that Deena Kastor had to make a Jodi-stop during the Chicago Marathon last weekend? Happens to the best of us, I guess.

Man, I feel lazy now. Three 20-mile runs in 4 weeks? You're the man! I only managed 4 miles this week and decided to bag a 12-mile run today when I saw the nasty rain. I may try again tomorrow.

Mike - 4, 20-mile runs? Wow...any Jodistops like Deena? 20 miles is a loooong run. I haven't run 20 miles since I was on my way to run 26 last year in Philly :rotfl2:. You're all set to BQ in Richmond. Just believe....man that sounds cheesy.

Lou - I did my last 10 mile run yesterday. You don't need no stinkin' 12-miler tomorrow. Just bag it.

Dave - When do you go back to the trainer dude? Tell them to give you a massage already.

Cindy - 16 miles today?

Colleen - How do you feel after that 20 miler???:scared1:

Hi everyone else.

I ran 10 yesterday a.m., spent the day in the City & saw a few friends from high school last night. That was fun. Nice rainy, lazy day today. Footbal, couch, naps. Bruce is cooking dinner tonight, too. Does it get any better than THAT?
