the big SNIP

My DH had this happen. He was in the office and the doctor was bit new. After an hour of digging, he gave up and told my DH that they were going to have to reschedule and have the other MD (the more experienced one) do it outpatient at the hospital.

My DH was complaining that he was going to have to go through it again. I told him that it made us even. I had 2 c-sections, he gets 2 vasectomies!

His recovering, in both cases, was quick and easy. Took it easy for a day and didn't lift anything extremely heavy for a few days. Hardly any pain.

Good for him, I wouldn't wish that on anyone. My DH was busied, it looked like someone beat him up. I know it wasn't the Dr, he is a wonderful Dr, with years of experience, but he just said that DH's body was determined to make more babies. lol

Great now I am truly greatful that they did not cut dh open last year

The doctor doesnt " quote" cut a person " open" for a vasectomy. When someone calls it a snip, thats literally what it is.
For it not to work or what the other pp described happened to her DH is actually very rare.

It is rare.

I actually consider it a good thing. We made that decision when the twins were very young(as was I). Now, we are considering another baby. Kind of like the universe knew that we aren't done, even when we thought differently.;)

DH and I are discussing this as an option these days.

I wonder
1) Is this procedure covered by your insurance? Will it be covered under the new health care law?

2)If not, how much does the procedure cost?

Thank you!

Insurance covered DH's, and we only paid $20 for the copay.

My husband was fine, didn't even take an Advil, or use a ice pack. I'm not sure if that's the norm, but other friends of ours while had some mild discomfort didn't have any major pain.

I was one of the "lucky" ones to be bruised and battered for almost 2 weeks :(

Biggest thing you can do is don't bend over in front of him until he's fully recovered.

:rotfl2: You really are all the same deep down aren't you??? My husband almost sent me head first into the dishwasher last night - AGAIN!! Who knew bending over to load dirty dishes was such an turn on for you guys. :lmao:

Question of my own - do most Drs do this in office or do you have to go to an outpatient surgery type place? How many days really would be needed from day of procedure to going back to work? Dh really needs to have this done but time we keep putting it off because time off from his job is a big deal. He's an EE so nothing really labor intensive just hard to get a few days off if needed.

Make sure his undergarments are "supporting" and don't let things "hang loose" after the procedure. DW had to run to the store for me during the procedure. After that, I sat and watched movies that afternoon and could have gone back to work the next day (procedure was on a Friday IIRC).

DH's was done in the office one afternoon and went to work the next day. He works in an office so no heavy lifting or manual labor.

Trust me, he wasn't looking at the dishes. :thumbsup2

Mine was done in the doctor's office. We scheduled on a Friday morning so I'd have the weekend to adjust.

My DH had it done on a Friday and was back to work on Monday. Actually on Saturday we went to the movies.

They were running late and I had to leave to go pick my kids up. When I was returning to the doctor's office, I saw my husband walking down the street. He didn't want to wait in the office anymore!

It was also done in the doctor's office.

He says it wasn't bad at all.

I can't help but to ask: how did you find out?

In our case,dh had 3 samples tested-following on from the 3rd -
The hospital sent a wonderful letter, which stated," feel free to abandon contraceptives" .
however, it went to dh's brothers address, rather than ours-and he opened it!
It was not common knowledge at that time,dh had been "snipped"::yes::

My hubby had his snip 33 years ago. He had it on a Friday at the Dr's office and rested over the weekend and was back to work on Monday. They did tell him at the time no heavy lifting for 6 weeks and tested him at 6 weeks to make sure it worked. One of the guys he worked with had his snip in late Jan. after his wife had her 2nd difficult delivery due to her heart condition. He didn't go back for his follow up and baby #3 was born in Dec. Thankfully all worked out for Mom and baby, but Dad had to re do his snip.

OOOOPPPPPPPPSSSSSSSSS! :rotfl:

Dh had his done with no problem. Had it done on a Friday so he could take the weekend to recover, just in case. He easily could have gone back to work the next day as he has a desk job. He drove himself there and home. Really not a big deal. I have had many more uncomfortable monthly cycles.

Now it did snow that night, so the next morning I was out with the kids doing the shoveling while DH watched from the window. No heavy lifting at first. Made the neighbors :confused3 a bit since he usually does that and everyone was out in their driveways :-)

DH had his done on a Friday. Iced the boys for a few hours. Had Super Bowl party on Sunday.

His was a little more painful because they had to search a little further north for the Vas Deferens. Don't the boys travel north in the cold? Maybe it had something to do with that.....possibly keep them warm before procedure for easier access?

Hilarious! I just pictured this happening and had to cover my mouth and put my head down at my desk to muffle the laughter. My co-worker came over and saw my shoulders shaking and thought I was crying.

Not all insurances cover it. For us, my tubal was covered 100% (we paid a $25 co-pay). Dh's vasectomy, on the other hand, is only covered at 50%. So we will pay about $400 for the procedure... here's how it was broken down for me (you're lucky I have my notes in my purse today! :-) )
TOTAL procedure: $1009
If insurance won't cover any of it, they discount it to about $700.
$187 - Dr's consult - our insurance will cover that completely as an office visit with only a $25 co-pay
$822 - procedure, in office, with local anesthetic and valium to keep patient calm and relaxed. Our insurance will discount this and pay half the discounted price. We pay the other half of the discounted price, and the "discount" gets written off. So, we will pay less than $400 out of pocket.

We are doing it in office. Heck, the consult is even the same day! We're doing it Thurs afternoon because it was the only time he could get in. DH is liking that he'll have an extra full day for recovery before going back to work. (half desk job, half warehouse wandering... he engineers systems and has to "try" things a lot)

We have 2 friends who have talked to DH about it - one is a commercial pilot and worked the day after his procedure. He said he had ice in his crotch as he flew a plane full of people cross country. ha ha Another is a firefighter, and he didn't go back to work for 11 days. He said he tried every time his shift came around, and just getting his bag of gear out of his trunk at the firehouse was too much, so he went back home.

FWIW, the local urology practice said that their busiest time is March Madness weekend... it's a great excuse for guys to sit around watching basketball games with peas in their crotches. ha ha ha:lmao:
