Went looking for P&S, got side tracked by DSLR Nikon D40, confused, now want to go back, regroup, and get opinions on really good P&S. Thanks for all your help!!!!!!!!!!!:thumbsup2

I am not aware of any p&s's that are anywhere close to that price, and if there is, I certainly wouldn't suggest getting it.

What are you looking for in your camera, what do you want it to be able to do, what does your current camera not allow you to shoot that you want. What are you shooting besides WDW? What type of shoots do you want to try and get while your at WDW?

well, my camera is an older kodak p&s and doesn't have IS. Boo! I also have a canon film slr but don't want to deal with film. I am trying to decide of a DSLR is worth the money or too much hassle to carry around. But on the other hand, I also don't like that my pictures are blurry quite often and I can't tell on my screen how well the picture is versus when I print it out. I have 3 kids so ice hockey, swim, birthday parties and family get-togethers, vacations are what I use it for. I am new to specifics and reading as much as I can.

Well, based on the fact that you have had an SLR in the past, that should be an easy question to answer for yourself, was it too much of a hastle in the past for you? If it was, then you shouldn't get a dSLR as it will be very similar.

But based on the swimming and Hockey, I would say that your going to either need now or sometime in the future to get a dSLR to capture the action shots, as they get bigger and stronger things start moving a whole lot faster, and no p&s is really up to the task of shooting sports for good action shots. Yes you can get some great shots with it, but you keeper average will be lots lower than with a dSLR.

What lenes or other accesories did you have for your canon, because most if not all of your film stuff should move over to digital, as long as it was after the EOS switch.

I have a film Canon EOS 7E. As far as the usage, I'm not committed to either type yet since the only time I used this was for vacations. The P & S I used for everything else because I scrapbook and want the pictures right then. I did check that the lens will not fit on the Nikon 40D.

I also thought if I could get some great recommendations on a P & S without price restrictions (reasonably) I could have some idea of what to go look at when I go shopping again.

i drool over the CANON G9 everytime i look at one in the stores!! if you are going to spend that kind of money on a p&s that one would be my pick. they go for around 500 bucks.

No it would not, you would have to have a canon to re use your current gear with it.

I wrote that down as one to look at, since I've read several posters considering that one.

I just bought the Nikon D40 and love it. It's heavier and a little more awkward to carry around then my P&S, a Canon SX100 though. My Canon SX100 is a superzoom (10x optical zoom) and it takes really nice pictures. I tried to post pictures that I took with both camera's to show the difference in quality. In the second pictures of the lemurs, the P&S was able to zoom in a little closer than my Nikon. I was pretty far away from the lemurs. If you think you'll want to expand on your picture taking abilities then I'd go with the D SLR. I can't wait to buy some more lenses for mine. :thumbsup2

Way less than $700 is the Canon Powershot S5 IS (more like $350). It's very popular here on the DIS (as was it's predecessor the S3). Great zoom, excellent video w/stereo sound, great macro and quite speedy....

I took over 2500 pics with my S3 on my last vacation and found it excellent.

Of course, it doesn't have the low-light abilities of a DSLR, but it's cheaper than most of the fast lenses that you'd need! :)

I would go with the new Olympus 1030 SW. It is 10.1 MP, waterproof to 33 ft, you can drop it from up to 6 and 1/2 ft high, Can sit on it, has a wider angle lens. It has face detection if wanted to use, in camera photo correction (limited of course) and Shadow Adjustment Technology. It will help you capture all the amazing details exactly as you see them. You'll capture smiles, even in backlight scenes; you'll pick up detail, even in the shadows cast by bright sunlight.

Sorry major Olympus fan here. Details are amazing, crisp clear shots. It's also small enoug to fit in your pocket and runs just under $400, buy an extra battery, some memory cards and you'll still be under you $700 limit. You could let your kids take pics without the fear they'll drop it or take it in the pool for some neat swimming pics. Olympus tends to hold thier value too. I tried to get an older model like the older one I have for my girls and they were priced so high that I'd rather get them a newly released camera for the price.

Ok, I just came back from looking again after a long hike with kids. I took my DD p & s and used it to see what I thought. I did like that it fit in my pocket. Didn't like that the screen was washed out in bright light. Didn't like the lag time to take the picture. Stopped in at Best Buy and re-held the D40 along with Canon G9. hmmmmmmmm......... I guess there is no perfect decision is there. Why oh why can't they make a p & s work like a DSLR?:cool1: Better yet, can the Disney Photographers just follow my family around and take the pictures for me? Oh wait, I'm not famous.:lmao:

Will the lenses fit on a Canon DSLR?

I looked at a Leica today, still kind of feel that the upper-end digital cameras take the same kind of picture according to the screen only. I don't know if my canon lense will fit another canon. It's actually a low-end lens, I found out today.

Thanks for the great comparisons! My husband and I were flipping back and forth between them! I have read on another thread that you were also considering buying the D40 and then you bought it! It's great that you were able to take both different cameras for the shots! Thanks for your input also!

which particular features of a dslr are you looking for in a p&s. the g9 as well as the hybrid class S3 and S5 do a lot of same features a dslr will do in that both will you shoot in full manual mode. the s3, s5, and g9 are nice because their zoom is optical not digital which means the pictures dont distort when you zoom in. lots of p&s use digital zooms which distorts the pictures when you zoom in.

I am looking for a fast picture and one that isn't blurry. Ok, let me explain, I have kids in swim team, ice hockey and we have lots of inside family gatherings. When I take photos inside my home, they tend to be slightly blurry sometimes and grainy. I have a kodak 740 with a 10x optical zoom. It DOESN'T have image stabilization - could be the problem:rotfl: . I love the way a DSLR takes a fast photo (lag time, I mean?) And it seems much clearer on the screen. I do take alot of photos in somewhat low light.
