Upcoming August 2005 Trip (Preview)
This is a continuation of the story that my family told me - I'm a beagle - after they got home from their deluxe boarding kennel - Walt Disney World! While I was saying hi to all of my kennel neighbors, barking, scratching, eating and generally having a ball - here's the story of my family's adventures.
After the soggy evening at MGM the previous night, my family drove back to the Dolphin and went up to the room. To their surprise, there was a lovely glass bowl filled with fruit (bananas, apples, pears, kiwis, mango, plums and oranges) and sprinkled with orchids. The little table in between the chairs was set like a meal with silverware, china and cloth napkins. There was a card with the bowl, and at first, they thought that the hotel had somehow gotten wind that it was somebody's birthday, however, when they opened the card they found out it was from my Mom's brother and sister-in-law from Virginia. What a wonderful Birthday Surprise! The next day on Thanksgiving Day, it was my Mom's birthday.
The weather on Thanksgiving Day was warm enough for shorts again, and my Mom doesn't wear shorts unless it's really hot! Early admission day was at the Magic Kingdom, so they drove and parked at the Ticket and Trans. Ctr. They used their AAA parking pass and parked in the special section near the front of the parking lot. My Mom took the camcorder again today and definitely had on her Happy Birthday pin which said "Today Is My Birthday". The first order of business was a fast pass for Peter Pan. Then they rode the following rides in succession: Winnie the Pooh, Indy Racetrack, Buzz Lightyear, and the new Stitch ride. My Mom was pretty nervous waiting for this ride because she was never brave enough to do the previous attraction of Extra Terrestrial Encounter. However, the Stitch ride was cute, and although it was a little dark, there was really nothing to be afraid of and she wondered why she worried about it at all. Of course, they had to ride the Peoplemover (Tomorrow Transit Authority) which is one of her favorite rides! While they were making their way to Barnstormer - they ran into PUSH the talking trash can which was so cute! He is a regular trash can but wheeled around right up to people and started talking to them! The little children wanted to see what made him tick, and when they pushed the little trash door he would say, "AHHHHHHHH." I might have "watered" PUSH a little bit if I saw him - but they tell me that you should definitely look for PUSH the next time you are there.
The Barnstormer had broken down with people in the cars high up on the track (poor people), so the Philharmagic was next. While my family was waiting in line outside to go in, they had a little Oompah band playing. One of the band members saw my Mom's birthday pin and started playing the Happy Birthday song with the Oompah band. It really made her day! They loved Philharmagic and it was just as great as they had remembered it the last time they went in June 2004 (please see the trip write-up "If Only The Beagle Could Come.)
After that, the teenager tried to pull out the Sword In The Stone, but no luck, so they used their fast passes for Peter Pan (loved the dog, Nana). It was lunch time so they tried a place they had never eaten at before, the Columbia Harbour House. They just loved it! They ordered the 1/2 sandwich and vegetarian chili ($6.59/each), coke ($1.99), and also a nice kid's meal which included chicken chunks, cheese chunks and goldfish crackers with a drink ($3.99). Don't forget the free ice water! Downstairs, they were looking for a place to sit and really could find one, but noticed a set of stairs. When they got to the 2nd floor there was another huge dining room upstairs with hardly anybody there. There were lots of nice tables next to windows with beautiful views of the park from the 2nd story. The teenager was still hungry (I can relate) so they had to order more food, this time a fried fish/chicken combo with a bag of mini-carrots ($6.89). Also, the restaurant had bathrooms upstairs which were more peaceful. They are definitely going to keep this restaurant on their favorites list.
After lunch, they got a fast pass for Jungle Cruise and tried to do the Pirates ride but the line was outside the building (!) which no one in my family had ever seen it that crowded before. The crowds were getting very big by this time. They did the Tiki Room, took the boat to Tom Sawyer's Island, and went back to Jungle Cruise with fast passes. Then they did another one of my Mom's favorites - Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse and camcorded the whole thing! (You don't enjoy it as much that way.) The line wasn't too long for Aladdin's Carpets, so they did that next. They loved the spitting camels on the unsuspecting people below (kind of like when I start drooling!)
They had heard about the delicious Dole Whip so my family tried to find it. They soon found Aloha Isle and ordered lemonade ($1.99), pineapple vanilla cup ($2.79), root beer float ($2.99), and vanilla chocolate cup ($2.79). They thought about waiting for the Parade, but instead decided to try and find their Walk Around The World brick which they had bought several years ago and had only been to once. I could have sniffed it out for them! After a long walk from the entrance of the Magic Kingdom toward the Grand Floridian Hotel, they finally found it. It was still in pristine condition at this location. After much camcording and picture-taking, it was time for the long hike back to the monorail. They took the monorail back to the Polynesian and then walked across the street and back to the car from there.
The next stop was Downtown Disney. The Birthday Extravaganza continued when they presented their coupon from the Birnbaum Guide for their free Disney collectible pin. You go to the Guest Services Desk inside World of Disney. It's a specially designed pin and very cute with Mickey on it. The teenager had to visit the LEGO store and then everyone stumbled upon free Ghiradelli chocolates. I guess it worked because they bought some. They looked at the Earl of Sandwich restaurant (from the descendants of the original Earl of Sandwich family from England) and definitely want to try that next time. Everything looked so good - and every sandwich was just $4.95.
They had a priority seating at the Cape May Buffet for 8:50 p.m. (that's the only time they had left when they called), so they decided to head back to the hotel to rest up. As they were driving back in their car, they saw live turkeys milling around beside the road on the way back to the Dolphin! Turkeys on Thanksgiving! Who'd have thought? You would have heard my Beagle Bugle Bark on that one! At the hotel, the little light was blinking on the telephone and there was a message. My Mom's brother had called and left her a message wishing her a Happy Birthday and a Happy Thanksgiving. She was very touched by it. I wish I had thought of it!
The Cape May Buffet is always fabulous and tonight, with it being Thanksgiving, it was jammed. My Mom had the brilliant idea of going early with the thought of being seated early. They arrived at about 7:30 p.m. They gave their name to the hostess and they waited, and they waited, and they waited. They walked around the lobby, they walked around the balconies upstairs and took pictures, they walked to the bar just to see what it looked like, 2 of them walked to the gift shops at a time just in case somebody called their name. Finally, at 8:50 p.m. they were called to be seated! The wait staff said that because it was Thanksgiving, that evening they had triple the number of diners than they usually have. Cost for 3 Holiday Buffets - $83.04 including tax. (No mention was made of the Birthday Girl, because by this time they were famished and didn't want any fuss.) The table next door had a birthday, however, and they brought out a cake with a candle for them. The buffet was worth the wait with their regular seafood, and also Thanksgiving fare. One thing that impresses my family are the little individual desserts. They are like little works of art and just delightful to look at.
Was it one of the best birthdays ever? You bet! How could it get any better being at Disney World with your family. Tomorrow, the Christmas decorations go up in the parks!
