The Bahamian Rum Runners! May 18, 2012 - 5 Nights on the Magic!

I am starting to put together my list for the FE exchange- it is one gift total per room per night? or one total for the whole cruise per room?

While it is completely up to you, most folks do one gift per family or per person for the whole trip. For our last cruise, I assembled a "family" gift that every family received one of and one individual gift for each child which I tried to tailor somewhat by age and gender. I will probably do something similar this trip, but the actual gifts will be different.

I try to get something special for each of the kids then a joint gift for the adults (if there are 2). I *NEVER* get to buy presents for little boys so their bags are normally full.

What I have an issue with is teenagers boys and men. I'm clueless. I'm covered with a male part of a couple but.... The only thing I've been able to be sorta happy with is Pirate stuff.

I am so not trying to burst your bubble I think a sugar cookie would be great - but I don't think DCL allows home made foods on board. I thought all food brought on board had to be commercially wrapped.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

This is the second time we are doing it and the last time, no one really organized it, laid out ground rules, etc. So we did one gift per night per room. It was a challenge to keep up with. One per family sounds like a great plan!

Thanks!

I found doing just one round of FE deliveries to be difficult enough to accomplish over a period of two days. No way could I keep up with one per night!

I've no issue with a home-made cookie as an FE gift (if DCL is OK with it). We had someone deliver a miniature of rum as an FE gift. DW particularly liked that one.

Would anyone be opposed to recieving a hand decorated sugar cookie?

From the DCL website:
Homemade, pre-cooked or other perishable items plus any open snack containers cannot be brought on board. Limitations on permitted food items are directly related to concerns for food safety and contamination prevention.

Now... if you'd like to send some cookies to my home address, that's another story!:rolleyes1 LOL!

Now that is a great idea that I hadn't thought of! Not so much of a sentimental value thing, but probably more useful!

Personally, I got a kick out of seeing what people came up with and I generally preferred the practical to the sentimental.

I've received some FE gifts that were great for the cruise (like the miniature bottle of rum, temporary pirate tattoos, Mardi Gras beads) or to take home (a thermal lunch bag), plus quite a collection of candy and snacks (which I took to the movies onboard), some practical gifts like pens and pencils, and some whimsical gifts like small Disney figurines.

On my last cruise I gave some pirate finger puppets to the elementary school kids and Disney coloring books (with a packet of 4-5 crayons) to the pre-school kids. I had parents tell me these were "life savers" in keeping their kids occupied during dinner.

Just thought of something else...
Would you like me to include early/late seating in the cruise chart I'm making? So you can look for people or sit with them during shows? Let me know either way, it's easy enough to add a column! :thumbsup2

pirate:Kids Meet:
Mackenzie (DD 10) has already been in touch with another little princess from the cruise.

I think its good to get the kids chatting before the cruise, because it gives them a person to get to know BEFORE the ship sails. This way they have someone they sorta know at the kids club.

She's still good friends with a girl we meet in our 2009 cruise (they exchange post cards from Disney and Castaway Cay).

Taylor (DD19) has always been anti-social and hangs with me and DH. I haven't been able to persuade her to meet but there's always hoping.

Bottles of Rum::drinking1
I've done the "bottle o' rum" for our 2009 cruise. My 2010 cruisers weren't into them so I went in a different direction. It seems there are more "rummies" on this cruise, do you think it would be appropriate to have a column for "rummy" so we know who wouldn't be opposed to bottles?

Well I guess no cookies but some rum sounds GREAT!!! We don't want to have to quote Captn Jack "Why is the RUM always gone?"

We are OFFICIALLY booked. Confirmation number done- I feel very relieved about this. Our travel agent said there was were no opening left for main dinner seating, but when I checked on DCL I was able to get a spot. I guess I will call DCL and ask if they can change this now that it's official :)

I'm super excited!!! THIS is our 3rd time on (as my son says) "our boat" and I will not be traveling with diapers for the first time!

off to get going on some :laundy: and housework-

see you all in 99 days....

Now that rum would make for one jolly pirate night matie! ;)

I have been talking with a lady in Nashville that has a store on Etsy - she will be making our fish extender for us. Ordered it today. Sooo excited. We also started buying a few generic things for FE gifts as well as some door decor stuff.

We LOVE our FE we got off of eBay... so excited we'll get to use it again!

In other exciting news... I just booked our airfare! We leave the 15th (do Disney the 16th & 17th) and come home the 23rd after the cruise. I was hoping to make it a bit longer of a trip, but my older son "graduates" pre-school on the 31st and I don't want him to miss all the final days of school. :)

Hi all!
I haven't checked in with the boards in a while. We are already signed up with the FE, but just wanted to say hello again.

Rum is GREAT by us both :-) Here's a tip too: When we went on the Magic Western several years ago, lots of people bought water, beer, and/or liquor in Key West and DCL allows you to bring it onboard. I don't believe they have changed that so we will probably do that. It saves us from buying an expensive case of water onboard--and trying to pack a bottle of rum or whatever in our checked luggage on the airline.

:goodvibes

That is a really good idea. I wonder if the price of water would be really jacked up in Key West though? I can remember our last cruise when we stopped there I needed cold meds and found a pharmacy pretty close by. The prices were almost double what I would have paid normally - but they had a much better selection than on the ship.

I forgot about this! thank you for the reminder... I don't think that the prices were outrageous in Key West for water, our last cruise was 2008 so hopefully it is still the same.
