No robots but one of the McDonalds "test kitchens" went to almost all touch screen ordering. There is only 1 register left that will take cash but will not take credit or debit cards. That easily cut at least 5 employees for that location if not more.

Yup, and several Walmarts around here now have only 2-3 actual cashier lanes, the rest are self check out.

At least at a touch screen kiosk I can just type it in myself and not worry that they forgot to change the fries to fruit or forgot to type no mayo or whatever. $15/hr for fast food workers is a joke, and these yahoos deserve the job losses coming to them. This has been going on for years and, I'm certain, would have happened anyway.

I ordered from Subway at kiosk about 5 years ago. My three local Panera stores already have touch screen ordering. I have to say, it works a lot better than someone who's not really paying attention to you while you are ordering.

My daughter just got her first job..it's working at McDonald's. She is so excited about it and comes home from every shift and is full of enthusiasm. She earns 11 something an hour because that's what our minimum wage is. You are very condescending to 'burger flippers' and if you feel you get bad service, it may be because of your attitude. My daughter is far from a yahoo and if she ever had to serve you, it would be with a smile on her face.

Where do cops make $15 an hour? I think they start here at close to $45,000. What I don't understand is why all of NY state is in the pool. Yes, NYC has a very high COL, but most of NY has a much lower one. My entire state should have a $15 an hour minimum wage if based on COL.

Omg. Clearly that person was referencing people who think they deserve $15/hr for doing a mcdonalds job. I'm going to assume your daughter is a teen because it's her first job. It's awesome she's excited.

Don't look for a reason to be offended by everything! Good lord. I try to be nice to everyone, but even I roll my eyes when I'm handed the entirely wrong order, or the cashier doesn't know how to refund the amount they charged me for something I didn't order, etc. I could see how that'd be my fault though.

I don't know about cops, but medics make that here in Columbus on private ambulances. Also in hospitals as techs. Or at least close to it.

The EMT-B techs in the hospital my husband is at now make around $12/hr. I think it was less in the ER at his prior hospital.

Your daughter is a fast good worker. It's ok to start small. Burger flipper is absolutely what I will call fast food workers, it's what they do, along with deep fat fry operator and cashier. I get so sick of this hyper inflated sense of what people do. Fast food workers are dispensable, require virtually no skill or education, and do not deserve a high level of pay.

I never said I receive bad service, or that am I rude to fast food workers. On the rare occasion that I order fast food I would prefer to order via a kiosk than face to face, particularly if it will eliminate this attitude of "my job at the deep fat fryer is super important and I'm a special snowflake that deserves more than a trained emt who scrapes people up off the side of the road". Anyone who thinks they deserve that much money to work fast food is a yahoo.

Btw, I think fast food is a great first job. It gives kids a chance to learn to follow a schedule, budget a paycheck, work under stress (the lunch rush), manage customer service, etc. But it is not an important job and it is not deserving of a high wage.

I live in the US(that post is a Canadian site, and I really can't speak to wages in other countries ). In my county, which is a medium sized city, police officers start around $15/hr. I work with experienced paramedics that make $16/hr. I don't think any mcdonalds worker deserves that much money. If they want a better life they need to get a better job or work multiple jobs. We've all been there, done that.

Yeah, it stinks. I know the ambulance place my husband was at didn't make hospital runs, but the ones that did weren't a huge pay jump.

My husband and his partner both moved to the same hospital around the same time, and even with experience and certification considerations his partner was still making under $16/hr as a medic.

EMT-B is just EMT-basic, so not medic. Can't do IVs, etc.

ETA: his uncle is a firefighter. I don't know if they get raises indefinitely but after over 10 years he was sitting at about $60,000 per year.

While I agree FF workers are definitely typically entry level people & the work is also entry level, the fact is the job itself requires a LOT more effort (and in some cases, more skill) than what a lot of "professionals" do for a living. The assembly line worker who built your car has a MUCH easier day than a burger flipper at McDonalds, but I guarantee you he/she makes a much better wage. Many of us don't have to spend our entire shift on our feet like FF workers, and we have occasions to mentally "check out" with a quick check of our phones, online news, social media, etc.

Bottom line, yes it's entry level work. But, it's certainly not a "cushy" job.
