The All-New What's For Dinner Thread!!(recipe index in OP)

Forgot to add we leave 8:06 am from Ohare.

I'll try to post before I leave in the morning.

Please. Poor Kenny my rear end. He's lucky I love him or else I'd be making room in my freezer right about now.
 As for the night off, for me that counts as one where I can enjoy dinner and not worry about how many more minutes I have before I have to drive the kids somewhere.

Janice -- Have a great time!

Wow, it seems like so many people on this thread are going to be at Disney around the same time. The kids and I are there with Beck and John from 10/25 to 11/3. I am wondering if F+W has anything to do with it?

Here's a picture from tonight's dinner. It is flounder in panko, fried, with a mango salsa and creamy avocado sauce, and curried sweet potatoes. It was really good. (ETA: Thanks for the fish, Beck! We ate all of it.)

Now I have to go to baseball practice...grr....

Last night's burgers were premade frozen ones from applegate farms. I've tried making them myself also. I just don't like them. I think it's just too much meatiness or something. I'd rather have a potobello mushroom "burger." I like the vegan boca burgers too.

Okay this is weird, this post was not there when I posted my question about the turkey burgers.

Merle- The only turkey burgers that I will eat are the ones from Costco. I stopped trying to make them, I did not like anything I made.

I got the Jennie-O burgers from Costco and I also like the Southwest ones from Trader Joe's. They also have a Tequila Lime Chicken burger that is good.

And yet, she still has nothing on my mother. I promise you this is a true story. I was sitting on her kitchen floor one day playing with my then three year old (Hailey) when she opened her fridge. I could see a block of cheese in the crisper drawer and I asked her when the Winn Dixie closed. She said "I don't know exactly, but it was before Hailey was born. Why do you ask?" I said "Well you still have a block of Winn Dixie brand cheese in that drawer". Her reply - and I promise this is the absolute truth - "Well does it have any mold on it? If not, it's probably still good." :scared:

Actually she is probably right. ;) Most cheeses when we get them are already aged for months, even years, and as long as it isn't moldy or smelly it is fine.

One time my sister and I were visiting our mother when she lived on Cape Cod and I got a glass of milk. Drank it, tasted pretty good, happened to notice the date. It had expired 3 weeks before. :scared: Don't know what kept that milk so fresh, but is was perfectly fine and I didn't get sick.

And just an FYI about expiration dates, for those of you who may not know, the date on canned foods is a canning date not an expiration. :thumbsup2

Honestly most packaged foods these days have so many preservatives in them that they would probably survive a nuclear blast.

Hi Guys, Just wanted to check in to update you on how we did. I guess the pill took the edge off a bit and the navacaine (sp) worked a bit. The procedure was still a bit uncomfortable but I didn't cry like a baby this time. I do have some bruising and swelling but I guess that is expected when you have 10 needles jabbed into your thyroid...:goodvibes Let's just hope the labs come back OK. I just heard of someone else having thyroid cancer and a thyroidectomy. Its pretty common I guess.

Andrew is looking better and the doctor was very please with his progress. He needs to keep doing what he is doing a rest a bit. I am going to keep him out of summer rec for a few days.

That is about it. Since I am not totally out of it, I am going to make a chicken and tofu stir fry.

Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes!

Glad things went well.

Headed home. I swear tonight I am making that cabbage! Didn't get a chance to this weekend. Of course I forgot to take anything out for dinner to go with it, may just try and thaw some salmon.

How bad is it one of the first things I want to do is to go to France and get a Grand Marnier slushie? I made that my screen saver at work.

Atta girl!!;)

Forgot to add we leave 8:06 am from Ohare.

I'll try to post before I leave in the morning.

If you can't post or if I miss it - I wish you & Alex a wonderful, safe vacation and have a slushie for me!:thumbsup2

That looked really, really good to me!!!:goodvibes

We have a big firework BBQ on July 3rd at DB. I am trying to come up with something new to bring for dessert. My DH has to work on the 4th ...so no big plans that day for us.

Does anyone have any interesting things they are making to celebrate 4th this week?!?!?! If so please share.

We are having a neighborhood block party on the 4th. We live on a circle, and there's a plot of land in the center that is common to us all. We frequently have parties, etc., there. We are grilling meat there, (everyone brings their own), each family will provide a side dish to share and lots of goodies and treats!

I'm making my ranch potato salad, brownies and some "patriotic" jello for the kids (blue jello in a small clear cup, topped with whipped cream and sliced strawberries). At dusk, we'll let off fireworks, and then set the kids up in sleeping bags in the common area and we'll show a movie on a sheet on the back of one of the houses. We're all very excited about this!!! It's always a fun time!

I'm having what I guess you would call a redneck Sangria, Lauren told me to mix Sprite and wine and it's good enough for me!

:rotfl: :rotfl:

I think that sounds about right. A girl has to have priorities. ;)

Your Dad may have rejected the flounder, but my husband took one look at this picture and asked if you could mail him any leftovers. :goodvibes

Well, dinner tonight was going to be a large baked sandwich, but I forgot to pull the dough out of the freezer. I got it out and it's trying desperately to thaw, but I'm not holding out any hope for dinner tonight. I guess I'll put the sandwich together later tonight and we can have it for dinner tomorrow. Of course, that means I have no idea what we're having for dinner tonight, and DH will be home from work in an hour. Maybe I'll make a quick run to Subway for a couple of foot long subs to cut up for us all.

My Aunt had a thyroidectomy and I have also had my thyroid biopsy done several years ago so you must be exhausted, thyroid is a tough biopsy. I will keep you in my prayers.

Thank you. I had 2 done today, so that was 10 needles jabbed in and out, in and out. It is pretty sore right now. I would love to get a Thyroidectomy now but that means synthroid (sp) meds and I am trying to get pg and the meds I am currently on finally stabilized my hormones.

Thanks again.

Lauren Glad the biopsy is over. I hope the path comes back ok too :thumbsup2 Also glad Andrew is on the mend.

Thanks again and have fun!!!

Good one...now you got me wanting one but guess what? No diet sprite or fresca...soooooooooooooooo, red wine and diet coke's not bad!!! :lmao: Thats a really redneck sangria! :rotfl:

Love it! Cheers to us!

Glad things went well.

Thanks!

That sounds like a wonderful time.

Our big bash is held July 3rd at my oldest DB house. The city fireworks shoot off right over his back yard (so close it is great!). Not quite as good as Wishes but a close second. He usually has about a 100 or more and everyone brings something.

Your Dad may have rejected the flounder, but my husband took one look at this picture and asked if you could mail him any leftovers. :goodvibes

My apologies to Kenny, but we ate everything. Even Caili, who professes to not like flounder, had a second helping. Maybe I should send the picture to my dad and show him what he was missing.

Ok. Just how much did my mother pay you to say that?
 Too funny. My mom would agree with Merle.

Lauren -- I hope you are feeling better.

Kathy and Lauren -- I usually put orange juice and Cointreau in my sangria...maybe orange soda and red wine for a redneck version??

Glynis -- You always have great plans for holidays.

Ann -- Your party sounds fun too.

As for our day, we'll watch the town parade and then go to a family friend's house for a barbecue and swimming. I still haven't figured out what I am bringing, but it will be a dessert for the swimming party because she always has so much food anyway. We'll visit another house during the parade, so I might bring some muffins or something like that because it will be morning.

Redneck! That is just wrong! :scared:

I made my cabbage!:woohoo: Turned out pretty good.

Asian Red Cabbage

1 T olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 green onions, sliced
1/2 head red cabbage, sliced thin
1 cup bean sprouts
2 T rice wine vinegar
1 T soy sauce

Saute the garlic and green onion in the oil on medium high heat for one minute, add the cabbage and bean sprouts and cook until wilted. Add the rice wine vinegar and say sauce and cook until heated through.

Thanks!

I just noticed you are also in New Jersey, if you need a doctor for a second opinion when the biopsies are back I would be more than happy to share the 2 I saw.

Have a great time!!

Honestly most packaged foods these days have so many preservatives in them that they would probably survive a nuclear blast.

I pretty much ignore expiration dates - I do the smell, texture, and taste test and then use it if it's good. No food poisoning yet!

I'm jealous. Our 'hood does NOTHING... I am always jealous of people who live in neighborhoods that have parties and stuff.

I ended up shoe shopping (I love DSW), then meeting some mom's for pizza and wine at a local pizza bistro. They had the most delicious 4 cheese pizza... Then we went to Marble Slab/Starbucks. I got home at 11:30 and I have an early morning tomorrow - our interim pastor is coming to spend the day in the office so I have to be somewhat on time (at least for the first day!).

Lauren- I am so glad that you managed to get through that biopsy, I am a big chicken. When will you have the results?

I'm having what I guess you would call a redneck Sangria, Lauren told me to mix Sprite and wine and it's good enough for me!

What time are you leaving?

Kat- when I was way younger we used to mix Lambrusco and Sprite. It tasted pretty good back then, I bet it would taste okay today too :thumbsup2

Merle- I am with you and Gretchen's Mom. To Marisa and Jeff and my totally OCD Dan, that is just horrible and they are always trudging around looking for dates on everything in the fridge.

Glynis- Your parties sound like so much fun. My neighborhood is not like that now, but when the kids were little I had the best neighborhood. Someone was always stopping in at the oddest hours. It was not unusual for a few of the ladies to walk down after 11 PM with coffee and something or for me to be stalking a door at dinnertime to highjack someone to have dinner with me. I was alone with three little ones and they ate next to nothing but I cooked every night so that we could all eat together. I needed those lovely women back then, they saved my sanity.

Tonight is going to be whatever I have time for. Marisa and I are taking Kady to Old Sturbridge Village and do not know when we will get home. Buddy will be at the farm until dark so we'll see.

Lauren, glad things went well with your test. Sending prayers and good thoughts your way.

WFD- baked chicken wings, rice pilaf, corn on cob.

Have any of you done corn on the cob wrapped in bacon w/ parm?
I saw this on another thread somewhere. I was wondering how it is done and if bacon gets crispy? I assume bacon would be precooked a bit first to get it crispy...think it is cooked in foil? On the grill or oven?

DM suggested I make eggplant parm for my DB's party. Haven't decided if that is what I feel like doing yet.

I have to say I am so happy I jumped into this thread feet first. You ladies really inspire me with all your wonderful dishes!:surfweb:
