Oh yeah, one more of many questions. Do the tubs have a ledge at the end of them. The kind you can put your shampoo or rear end on to shave legs? I've booked a disabled room because it ain't fun shaving your legs left handed while balanced on one leg:scared: If the tub does have a ledge, then I can save the Disabled room for someone who needs it more.

ummm, ok, you've got me stumped on this one. What do you mean by a ledge? There is a shower tub. You could sit on the side of the tub, right?

I have never heard of booking a disabled room for this purpose. I think you could easily sit on the tub and shave. From the picture I found of the accessible bathroom, it looks the same (except for the rails of course).

according to her earlier post she only has use of one arm...so she needs to be able to sit without having to use her arm to balance herself so she can use her good arm to shave

The only thing I have to compare it to is at CSR. They have a 2 foot ledge at the end of the tub, away from the spouts, that was tiled. The side of the tub is too narrow for me and I have very long legs, so I just don't fit.

Since my car accident, I have an injured back, fused neck, balance issues and maybe 10% function out of my right arm, therefore I can't grab a hold of anything on that side if I loose my balance. I might be more clumsy than most, but I've fallen out of my tub at home and ended up tearing completely through my rotator cuff. It cost me yet another surgery on my shoulder. I just had my 5th and final surgery last month to install a reverse shoulder prosthetic.

So I guess I'm saying I just feel safer with a wider place to sit, yet feel guilty if taking a HA room away from someone who is worse off. So really hoping they have a ledge so I won't have to worry.

I understand that. I was asking about a "ledge" as opposed to a normal edge of a tub.

Here is a picture of the bathroom area. Hope this helps you decide if it can be comfortable for you. :wizard:

Thank you so much for the picture Dreams. I just got off the line with housekeeping at AKL, they don't have the extra tiled area at the end of the tub, but they suggested getting a shower chair for a regular room. Duh, I never thought about that. Now I can quit stressing and enjoy a guilt free trip. Sooo looking forward to the next 10 months of planning!

I think that they have portable tub benches that you could likely request for use in a regular room.

Ah ha...I knew I'd seen this info somewhere:

disABILITIES FAQs (See post #7)

The answer appears to be that the extra tiled area at the end is one of the types of accessible tubs. But, they also have shower benches--just make sure that if you decide to go this route it's need has been listed as a guaranteed block by special needs, not just a request.

I really need to get one of these at home. I sit on the shower floor to shave my legs. One of these days I'm going to end up with athletes butt!

We have our first trip home to AKV in Feb next year.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me about the activities they have for children at the hotel. I know about the night vision, the stories around the fire and feeding the Flaminoes but I also read somewhere ages ago about African craft activities such as making bracelets and so on. Does anyone have any more information on these crafts, are they daily, where are they located, cost etc

Thanks :goodvibes

Sorry, I don't know anything about the crafts, but here is the activity list from May.

Oh, absolutely! It will make things so much easier.

There are lots of varieties available online, or visit your local medical supply store. I even found 2 designs on Costco's website and dozens on ebay.

Heading to AKL next month - going to a conference at the Swan/Dolphin, but am staying at AKL by choice. I really enjoy the artwork, theming, Boma, the aroma.

Aroma??? :scared1: What kind of aroma? :scared:

Random question: Does anyone know how much the AKL logo merchandise is in the gift shop? What all is available with the cute resort logo? Picture frame, mug, hat, shirt? Just trying to budget! Thanks! :)

There's lots available, but, it all falls in the range of too expensive for me.

My advice is to buy a refillable mug... it's a great souvenier and fill it for your entire stay. There is an outlet not far if you have a car.. but no telling what you'll find- we ALWAYS go there or make our own .. like tees and so forth...
more money to spend on fab meals ...

we were at AKL back in 2006...pool view and loved it.
then we went to Poly in 2007, and loved it!

I recently booked a "special" standard room for only $165.00 a night for 5 nights in Dec!! great rate, right? How could I pass that up?

BUT now I just saw some photos from allearsnet of the standard rooms... which is just parking lots and buses-- not at all pretty, and some were just plain gross.:confused3 .. so,

HOW do you get UPGRADED for free:worship: ?
I keep reading that this happens to other people, but no suck like for me ever before....
or can I pay the difference, and just request an upgrade to pool view?

My concern is that when I checked just regular availability of rooms during our stay (1st week in December '08):surfweb: , the website appears to show the resort in unavailable for booking. I.e., is it sold out? and if so, am I stuck with my Standard room overlooking the roof and/or parking lot?

I'll make do... we love the resort no matter what, but I always have liked my balcony for quiet time with my wife... and would like to have something a little more vacation like for a balcony view, than the view like I get at my local grocery store parking lot?

Ideas? Suggestions?
Thanks

You are very welcome. I figured instead of trying to understand what you are looking for "Here's a picture. See for yourself." :goodvibes Glad it helped!

The shower chair is a great idea! I have seen those in homes, never thought about it for a hotel.

10 months of planning! Oh my! We put our trip together in 6 weeks and got everything we wanted into the plan. I can't imagine having 10 months to drive DH crazy! :rotfl: Enjoy! :wizard:

When we were there I asked the staff at the CL about how do people get free upgrades? (we paid for the room we wanted - savannah view, CL) The reply was, "Haha! They don't happen often. If you want something, book it - don't hope for an upgrade. Not here. We fill up."

Take it for whatever you like, but that was the response directly from staff.

We will be coming "Home" for the first time this Christmas. Does anyone know when we would be able to find out what special activities will be offered at AKV over Christmas and New Year's? I am putting the finishing touches on our plans.
