As promised, here is the update from my TA. Stay away from Sago or move to the Poly. The entire 5th floor of that building is closed. The TA's are upset that they were never informed by Disney that all these renovations were to happen now. I did request to stay in Sago, because we always stay there. I have asked not to be there after this news. So, the luck of the draw will happen in 5 days from now as to where I will be for 7 nights.

Wow, can you believe the upgrade from value resort to the GF? If all these rooms are closed off to the guests who actually booked the GF, where are they going to put everyone? RPC floors, closed. 5th floor of Sago, closed. I know that I better not be moved out of the GF for what I am paying because the GF doesn't have enough available rooms and is overbooked.

Here are a few thoughts...in no particular order...I hope they're comforting.

1. I don't think I've ever read a negative report about the CM's at the GF. They seem very well trained and it sounds as if the hospitality there is stellar. I'm sure they're ready to deal with guests who are (rightfully) upset about the work being done.

2. There have been many people from this thread who have been there recently and only one seemed overly negative about the construction, and if I may be so bold, he/she seemed to fixate on the negative rather than look at the positive (ie: the 75% of the resort that is NOT under construction).

3. Geographically, if any building had to be under construction, Sago would be the best one. It seems as if they've worked on the buildings from south to north and are finishing up with Sago before they start work on the RPC in a few weeks. Sago is very easy to avoid being in, or for that matter, looking at. If you're placed in Boca Chica, Big Pine Key or on the courtyard side of Conch, you'll never see the work.

4. I don't know what your travel party is like MommyGina, but I'll tell you, in mine, I'm the only one who views the GF as anything more than a bed. They're excited to stay at a deluxe and look forward to the monorail convenience, but otherwise, it's just a place to sleep. Therefore, the only one who will be overly affected by this will be me, and I'm trying to go under the mantra that if I let it bother me and go in angry or prepared for the worst, I'm only setting myself up to make the trip miserable for me, my travel companions, and any CM I come in contact with.

5. I highly doubt you'll be moved out of the GF. It's Disney's flagship resort. Where else could they put you? CL at Poly or Contemp? I'd take that! They're not going to say, "Sorry, you're going to a moderate." If for some crazy reason you have to leave the GF, I can only imagine that it would be a magical upgrade of epic proportions. I look at it this way, those lucky people upgraded from Value to GF will *likely* be placed in GV rooms. If they are, then gee MommyGina, where does that leave you and I? :rolleyes1 A lagoon view mabye? :lovestruc Sugar Loaf? :woohoo:, dare I say it the RPC? :worship:

6. If anyone has read my posts on this thread, you'll understand that I've done a lot of thinking about this, and what I'm saying here is a huge turnaround from where I was 2 weeks ago. It's Disney, it's the Grand, I'm going to be with people I care a great deal about. There's no reason to be worried. I'm sure the room assigner already has our rez in front of him/her and we'll see where we land. If it's not acceptable, we'll politely, but firmly ask to be moved, and I'm sure the GF will come up with something GRAND for us.

Y'all have a GRAND day now!

I'm sitting in my room on the second floor of Boca Chica right now. DD got sick so the boys went to a park without us.

Anyway they're working with the lifts at Sago. It looks as if many ofthoae rooms are unoccupied.

There is also a lift cherry picker type thing in front of Boca Chica. During the day, the main door to this building is closed but it's been open in the evenings after the workers are done. There are also some white construction walls around the Boca Chica entrance area near the pool.

I hear no noise in our room. Well except for the MK train whistle. :)

The resort is still great.

There is (or at least, there was) a guard outside the GF who greets you when you pull in to park and her name is either Fay or Faye. She is a magical CM and I'm planning a customized t-shirt in her honor. Last year, the day after hurricane/tropical storm Faye, she greeted us at the gate, apologized for causing so much trouble (joking-her name...Fay...the storm...Fay.....get it? :lmao:), and her parting words were, "Y'all have a GRAND day now!."
I'd like to put her final words on a t-shirt and wear it....hopefully we'll find her.
Does anyone here know her and know if it's Faye or Fay?

Real quick update before we head back out. Were headed to mk for emh and a hot dog from caseys! In the interest of full disclosure I wanted to say that when we walked through the lobby this am (around 1130) they were sanding the floors to prep for the tiles. It was fairly loud but bearable. That is probably the mechanical sound that julie (?) heard. Not a tile saw or cutter. We did schedule tea again for tomorrow at two so I'll update again if its bothersome.

We were just in the lobby now and the band was playing. I remarked to dh that staying here is like vacationing at a nice wedding!

Night!

Can't wait to see how the tile turns out! I'm so excited they are doing this this year since we're getting married next year at the Wedding Pavilion with our reception at the GF!

I grabbed these from another site, but they show the new floor and it is beautiful. Hope it is ok to post them here

Work is now taking place on both floors. On the 2nd floor it's between the cage elevator and M. Mouse Mercantile; on the 1st floor it's to the right of the staircase.

Beautiful!

What beautiful photos! Thank you so much for posting them. It's really nice to see why they are doing so much construction. When we were there last week, that beautiful marble with the trip was not yet installed. It seems like they are working really, really quickly to get it all done!:)

We will be there in October too, when will you be there? We check in on the 18th, but only for two days.

The floor pics are awesome. It will be so beautiful when it is done. Thanks Tinker*Shell*Bell for posting them. Can't wait to see it when it is done. At the rate they are going, it should be pretty much finished when we go in October.

I stayed RPC Aug. 6-13th. Every afternoon I would peek behind the screen that was in place to hide the tile work. They are working on the 2nd floor around the elevator. From what I could see, it is beautiful. I think it will be a great improvement over the carpet. I did notice that the carpet in the hallways in the main building is getting very worn with raised areas across the floor. It was very annoying because when you hit those areas your shoes would catch them and you would stumble. The tile work was very quiet. In the afternoon we would sit in the concierge lounge and not really hear anything. Even in the lobby sitting area you were hard pressed to notice anything. The only bad part was the elevator in the work area was closed so the concierge elevator was always super busy. You can see by the photo that no one seems to mind the work going on right above ther heads.

Just got back from GF. We were upgraded from a GV to a LV in Big Pine Key. We were given a dormer room on the top floor, which was lovely and definitely big enough for the three of us, however, our view was of a tree off the balcony. Honestly, it was so hot this past week that I had no intention of spending any time on the balcony anyway, and I wasn't about to complain about getting an upgrade (my first ever).

Mousekeeping was top notch, absolutely lovely. Turndown service was a treat and the CMs at this resort ARE very pleasant and will bend over backwards for you.

I won't even bother getting into the construction as it's already been covered here regarding what is currently being worked on. None of the work disrupted our enjoyment of the resort, however, it was interesting to have construction workers driving around during the day as I made my way to the beach pool.

Speaking of the beach pool, we had a pleasant surprise when Vincent D'Onofrio (Law and Order, Men In Black, Mystic Pizza) and his family showed up there yesterday; I think they must have just checked in. Fun to see a fellow NYer.

Ate at the Grand Floridian Cafe once for dinner and again for breakfast this morning...both meals were comped--dinner took longer than expected (and all we ordered were the burgers) so they told us we would not be paying (we did not complain!) and there was a mix-up with the bill this morning, so the manager comped us for our inconvenience. Both surprises. Afternoon Tea was ALSO comped when we sat and waited 15 minutes in the tea room before a server addressed us and even then she came back twice and said she would "be right back to take our order." This was on Monday and it was apparently a crazy day--there was some sort of mix-up with a group of elderly ladies who were there from an assisted living facility and the manager himself told us that they were short-staffed that day. He gave us another ressie for Tuesday and after we ate, we were told that the GF would be picking up the tab. Another pleasant surprise (and Tuesday's experience was MUCH better). BTW, we DID pay for all of our other meals this past week, LOL.

Overall, it was a nice experience. We couldn't have afforded this stay without the 4/3 deal. I'm glad I finally got to stay at the GF, but my heart will always be at the Poly.

We too are just finishing up a wonderful trip to wdw and the grand. (We are actually sitting at the airport awaiting the dreaded plane that will whisk me back to reality...) We too had wonderful experiences with the cast members although no comped meals or anything like that. Just happy plesant observant cm's. We were really not bothered by the construction at all and can't wait to return!

Is the RPC closed completely now or just certain rooms? If it is under construction, does anyone know the projected completion date? Thanks.

I heard the same thing about the 26th. Hey, good news about Tropical Storm Bill. Looks like it is turning to the north.

We arrive on the 25th and we got the call to move to SL....so I am sure it is around then! :(
