~*~The After-Twilight Bookclub!!!~*~

i started vampire academy yesterday, i was able to go all three at the library. it's another interesting take on vampires although it's very slow to make explanations and get into any real action. i'm on page 188 i still feel like the author is still explaining the types of vampires, etc.

mel, don't skip the bards because of me, they are really very quick to read and were enjoyable if there is nothing else you're dying to get to. ykwim?

Don't worry, I have enough on my to-read list that I won't miss the Lily Bards! lol

RE: Vampire Academy - how do you feel about the student / teacher thing?

RE: Vampire Academy - how do you feel about the student / teacher thing?

i'm ok with the student/teacher thing. i know if i were Rose i'd be going for it, jumping in with both feet!

i guess it's also because it's not a standard high school and he's really not that much older... but... if it were my daughter, i'd have that boy strung up by his youknowwhat's:eek:

I picked up City of Bones (upon the many recommendations her e on the DIS and elsewhere). Read it pretty quick (two days maybe). I gotta say...not impressed. I have no desire to read the other two books. As soon as CClare A)named her MC "Clary" which is silly close to her own last name and B)Described her as clumsy (I am SO over "clumsy" teen heroines thank you SMeyer et al), I checked out. Then the revelation at the end of the book.

Uh, PUKE.

On the plus side, I'm learning a WHOLE lot about what I do not want to do in my novel.

One of my students recommended Vampire Academy and another one called House of NIght.

Then I recommend you don't read the House of Night series, out of all of those I think it's definetly the worst.

Love seeing all these recs. After reading Twi, I got about 4 books into Sookie. Then I discovered fanfic and that my beloved Cullen's could live on....... so yeah that is all I have read for months!! So many great stories out there. However, when I do get back to reading books old school style, I will come back here to see what I should start reading.

I don't mind the student/teacher thing either. Probably because he is pretty young but also I think that Rose is somewhat mature with what she has already experienced and knowing that she has to dedicate her life to protecting someone. It's almost like they all skip a lot of the teenage stuff.

Except when she becomes all angsty. :)

I'm with you, so addicted to being able to still read about the Cullens. But, I'm going camping for 4 days - no internet or cell phone coverage - so I guess I get to go back to the old-school paper books.

I didn't care for the first VA but then I liked the second book... so, you never know.

As for the House of Night.. I liked them better (so much of it is personal preference) because I enjoyed the humorous style of chit chat between the characters. However, by the last book I was WAY done and over it. Still, I like them funny and these two books seemed a lot light'er somehow to me then say.... Morganville Vamps or something like that (which I did not like).

That makese sense about her dedication/maturity.... good call on that. But she's a bit slutty, too...admits to having enjoyed the pleasures of making out with several types of guys (of course she's allegedly a virgin). It's just weird how they assign the role of "slut" to the (Oh what was the type of vamp rose is.. I forget slugoi magoi? They all blend together). LOL It would be fun to see that book actually written about in like an English class.. "Explore the role of females and compare/contrast them with the upper and lower class role expectations" or some other type literary crap. :teacher:

Yeah maybe, since you haven't seemed to enjoy any of them.

Not entirely true. I adore Harry Potter and Artemis Fowl. Many others too. I think that I may be YA'd out right now, at least with some of the typical YA tropes and archetypes.

Someone from my writer's group suggested "A Song of Fire And Ice". Perhaps i'll take a chance with some fantasy for a while.

Its on my could not finish bookshelf:

Here is my review -

Honestly, I even skipped forward a bit and TRIED to see if something interesting, fresh, or fun would happen. Nope. :sad2:

However, different strokes for different folks. Maybe there's something there I couldn't see?

I love that you have a could not finish bookshelf, it goes along with my to read if there's nothing else one.

I was getting the vampire types all confused between the series too. Rose is a dhampir? Is that right? Yeah, I think the slutty makes sense too, if the only way you're going to have kids is to tempt the Moroi (the alive vampires??) to go down to your class - plus that whole could die at any time thing. And having hot Russian teachers walking around.

An analytical review of it would be interesting but then I'd never be able to read it on the fluffy level I do now! :rotfl:

BTW, Vampire Academy is apparently 2 hours out of Missoula, MT which is about 6 hours from where I live. Dang, if there really were hot Russian guys hanging out in the woods it'd be time for a road trip!

I also have a "should not have bothered finishing" shelf for the books that I could not "could not finish." :lmao:

I also have an to-read shelf called "interesting but will probably never get to it" shelf.

I looked that up on goodreads and it looks like that's the name of the series and that the first book is called A Time of Thrones. just FYI (you probably already knew that though)

I knew that about your the Montana Location... so now you have to keep your eye open for Silver Volvo's and Shadow Kissed teens. lol

Yes... Dhampir... I liked my new class "Slugoi-Magoi" vamps that I made up.

It is an interesting little world the author created. The more I think about it the more fun I think it would be to have an entire junior or senior class (or better yet - college - they love to debate feminist issues) doing a paper on it.

Every time I hear the name Dimitri I can't help but think of the movie Anastasia. :rotfl:
Gimme pics of your hot Dimitri, so far I haven't found anyone that looks like I imagined...

how about a younger john stamos??

i just finished shadow kiss and i have to say that i'm sad there wasn't a HEA. i loved roza and dimitri, even with the taboo teacher/student thing going on. i really hoped that the author would have found a way for the moroi (??) to fend for themselves more so rose and dimitri could be together, or for dimitri to guard christian and they could all camp out together.

i really enjoyed this series, maybe there will be a 4th book??:confused3 it's certainly set up for another. maybe rose will cure dimitri of his stragoiism?

LOWIE!

I finally got your next installment - it was hiding in my mail files. STUPID MAIL!

Anyway, it was REALLY great. I wrote you an email already. Really great! Seriously. :worship:
