That is a brave decision you have made Liesa! Congrats on being a student again. I truly hope it brings you what you are looking for in life. It's hard to know what you really want sometimes so *high five* to you in figuring it out :thumbsup2

Anatomy & Physiology

That's a bear of a class, but just keep swimming. :fish:

Thanks, Pat! Can you imagine?! 3 TERMS!! :scared1:

I memorize well, so I hope I can do well!

Wow, Liesa, that is impressive news!! I am sure it will bring a lot of change to your life as well as to your family and I hope that you will all be able to adjust to the new circumstances! I think you are doing a wonderful thing and I am sure you will be a fantastic nurse once you have completed your journey! I wish you all the best for it! And that MNSSHP will be around for years and years to come so that you can have a fantastic graduation celebration during a MNSSHP one day in the future! :goodvibes

It's going to mean BIG changes! But with only the one math class this coming term, with summer on its heels, I'm not too worried. I hope Rebekah and I can have a class at the same time, so I'll only be AT school for a couple of mornings or afternoons a week. In fact, as I was thinking about the practical ramifications, maybe if she has another class before or after mine, I can use the time to run on the indoor track. Or go to the study center to get tutoring.

I still hope I CAN get to a party! That's at the very top of my to-do list at WDW!!

T minus 10 pages. I have to pay attention not to miss the transition to a new thread.

I KNOW!! I am writing my next update now- pix are already uploaded. So likely ONE more update, then off to a new thread. Exciting stuff!!

OH Liesa!!!

That is AWESOME!

Surely there is some sort of "intern" program that you can cite and come to Disney with Lauren at some point as her nurse. ;)

You will be a GREAT nurse!

You are right...all you need is to have that 2 yr degree and you will be off to the races. We can't find enough nurses! This will be great!

Hmmmm.... you always have such GREAT ideas!! Why didn't I think of that!!?? :worship:

I hope I can be a GREAT nurse- and honestly, I am (don't think me weird) just as excited about the administration as I am about the practical end of things.

It's the getting to the 2 year program that is frustrating and time consuming! 1 1/2 years is a long time to just GET there! :headache:

Congrats on moving forward with your education!! You will be a great nurse!

Thanks, Tracy!! Moving forward, but slow, slow, slow!!

Well, that is a big decision! Good luck and God bless in your studies. I am fully confident that you'd make a terrific nurse. And I know there is a great demand for good nursing care across the country.

As an engineer, I'm sure I can help with your math class. I'll give you the tip that got me through the Professional Engineering licensing exam:

When in doubt, the answer is b).

Makes you feel confident about driving on our bridges, doesn't it? :scared1:

Congrats! That is a huge decision and I'm sure it is the right one for you and your family. Good luck!

Jill in CO

THANKS, Jill!!

I really do hope it's the right decision! And with starting out slow, I'll be able to gauge things as I go. If things start to fall apart, then I'll put it on hold again. Family is my first priority. ;)

Oh Liesa:goodvibes! What wonderful news for you and your family! A career in nursing sounds like a perfect fit for you too. In my family alone, there are 5 nurses including my own mother. DH jokes that I'll most likely go back to school after my girls are grown and become a nurse as well. What I'd really like is to work postpartum with all those babies! I love babies.:goodvibes

That's a LOT of nurses. And I'll bet when someone gets sick, you get 5 opinions on what to do! :lmao:

I like to push papers and write reports (imagine that?!) AND I like to take care of people. sounds like a perfect combo to me!

If I had to pick a specialty right now, I'd have to choose a surgical unit or geriatrics. I LOVE the elderly and ADORE listening to their stories. But that's LONG, LONG way down the road!

Oh boy, chemistry scares me! I barely passed by the skin of my teeth in high school and didn't even bother pursuing it in college. Kudos to you for tackling it, I'm sure your determination will push you through. And re-taking idiot math isn't such a bad idea, as you said it will refresh you for the difficult math that is coming! Love your order of priorities too...helping with the family income and getting to Disney every year!

I started chem in college and dropped it after a week. They introduced the "mole" and I was OUTTA there!! Could.NOT.get.it! I was headed for a C, and in my vain pride, I didn't want a C on my transcript. Kept my 3.84, but never learned to struggle through a tough subject either. Now it's time!

So, you're starting March 15th then, how exciting!!! Just view it one step at a time, knowing that each class gets you that much closer to your goal. I'm wishing you all the best in the world with this endeavor Liesa. Congratulations and best wishes as you begin.

I just found out, that I can REGISTER on the 15th; classes start on the 28th, so still a bit of time before things get going.

Your encouragment means the world to me!! THANKS for cheering me on, and you're right- ONE STEP AT A TIME!!

I know if I can get an A or B in this math class, I can really do the rest- well, actually, if I can swing a B out of chem, I'll be really, really happy! And the timing of that is perfect, as that is the next class I'll have to take and I can do it this summer, when there are no other homeschooling obligations!

I don't know about brave, but it will mean some changes. I am really looking for something to do with my extra spare time and to be able to make some spare cashola. As for figuring it out... Time will tell on that one.

Awww, thanks, Mark, I will definitely need God's blessing on this endeavor. I think with where Health Care is headed, there will be an even greater demand for RNs!

Ok, so I'll make you a dealio. I'll answer B when in doubt, and if you come to Oregon and seek out your healthcare, I'll come to DE and drive on your bridges. But I won't change your diapers if I end up in geriatrics. ;)

What exciting news! It's always fun to start something new. I think you would make a great nurse. :thumbsup2

Chemistry is one of the more misunderstood sciences. It's really not that bad. I actually took quite a few Chemistry electives in college. I think Chemistry is a lot more interesting and easier than Biology or Physics. And if you take it in the fall semester, there may be a party on Oct 23 for Mole Day. party:

Mole Day? Shall I break out my dancing shoes? :lmao: I have to ask, what on earth would they do?? Mix this and that and make really cool explosions?? I hope so!

I am hoping that I get a really fun instructor who can make chemistry easy for me to understand and to "get it".

Oh, I could never ask you to do that. I'm pretty sure there is an amendment in the Constitution against it, actually.

March 15th?

WOW! That's um...in two weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats my friend, you will be amazing.

So, by taking baby steps, one class at a time, I have set my sights on an RN degree.

Congrats on deciding to head back to school! We will be nursing students together! :goodvibes I am in my first year of a 4-year BScN program. A&P is a heavy class but it is really interesting and very relevant to the work you will be doing as a nurse.

Leisa - Congrats on going back to school and being accepted in the nursing program

As you might remember, I am a nurse practitioner and my first step at nursing education was an AD degree. Then I got my BSN, my MSN, and a post master's certificate as an adult Nurse practitioner.

I did this over a course of many years. The last part was when my kids were small. So I know YOU CAN DO THIS!

The reason they make you take idiot math is, unfortunately, more than a few people in those programs are not super smart when it comes to basic math skills. Its to make sure you can adequately calculate drug dosages for administration. But, meds are so automated that administering them is becoming more and more idiot proof.

The best quality you can have to becoming a good nurse is common sense and I know you have that!

Please feel free to contact me anytime because I have been in nursing since I graduated from high school. I have taught nursing, too. I have a ton of experience and I am happy to help in anyway I can.

Months and months ago, I had gotten a crazy idea to look into taking a tour, or extra ‘thing’ as part of my trip. When I found out I had about $350 extra cash to play with, a few of those little splurges suddenly became a reality, including a tidy tropical upgrade, a hop to the Hoop, and a Seedy Kind of Tour. I admit, I was REALLY looking forward to this in depth peek inside and behind the scenes of this area! One of the most vivid memories I have of my first trip in 2000 to WDW was a spin through what I remembered as a re-birth of The Garden of Eden. Seriously, I wonder if things were as orderly and prolific then as what grows in The Land now. If so, it’s a crying shame Adam and Eve ate the apple, even if only on this level.

Exactly at 11:15, I checked in at the little desk between the bathrooms and the queue entrance to Soarin’ to meet up with my next co-Post Host who will be guiding you through the next portion of our day! I was given a nametag to fill out, and told to wait on the benches nearby. In fancy Post Host style, I went with this design.

LiesaDay1277.jpg

After a minute or two, Alisha joined our little group- who will now take over as your 3rd POST HOST!!! You can feel the excitement, can’t you??!!

Good Morning! My name is Alisha and I graduated not long ago with a degree in biology, and I am very excited to be one of your POST HOSTs today for our tour of The Land’s Test Gardens, which is actually a working agricultural and aquaculture research center! Welcome! Please stay together as I go over our morning’s agenda, as well as a few rules we have in our garden areas.

LiesaDay1279.jpg

You may look at, smell, and take pictures of all the areas and plants we visit, but unfortunately we ask that you do NOT touch any of our displays! They are very fragile and must remain sterile.

Please stay only on the paths and sidewalks. Even our staff must wear surgical booties when they tend the soils and plants. (I wondered if they give them a shake before they put them on?)

Our first area is:

LiesaDay1278.jpg

This not only tells us that we have entered the area where we conduct research on pest control, but also serves as a stark reminder that you SHOULD have used the restroom before you checked in. Now it’s too late! Muahahahaha! Our first line of defense in our test gardens is little beasties like this:

LiesaDay1281.jpg

Of course, we not only use them here, but release them into all the lakes on WDW property to make sure no one has the pleasure of swimming in them on the blistering days of summer. We are pretty sure these are to blame for closing the beloved River Country years ago.

We collect all our tissue cultures from the Kleenex’s of our guests with toddlers. Getting that “solid media” really isn’t difficult at all, and makes those veggies extra resistant!

LiesaDay1282.jpg

No pest control program is complete without a few Venus Flytraps. They come in especially handy when our pint-sized guests get too “handy” themselves. Watch your children please!

LiesaDay1284.jpg

Now it’s time to move out into the areas where we use all that pest control and biological warfare. See what happens when someone goes too far in developing various methods of mealtime torture?? This is our prime example of the ultimate “Honey Do” device! Think of its power Dear Housewives!

LiesaDay1285.jpg

The possibilities of the next specimen are amazing! The size of this purple broccoli alone could take gallons of fake cheese sauce!! If Casey’s is ever out, you now know where it all went. Imagine your guests' amazement at the beautiful presentation of such a rich hue paired with Velveeta Orange!

LiesaDay1286.jpg

Of course, for that size of broccoli, we also have just enough Basil to cover your needs. A little Pesto, anyone??

LiesaDay1288.jpg

Or, if you need to make Italian Sauce, and need more than Basil, we’ve got enough Rosemary to feed all of Vatican City.

LiesaDay1289.jpg

Mother In Law coming for dinner? We have just the answer! Add a little of this to that Italian Sauce, and viola!! She’ll be offering to take you out for the Olive Garden in no time!

LiesaDay1290.jpg

Now, for those of you who are begging for a gall bladder attack, we have searched the world over for you, and have found the amazing little “curry plant”. Add a little of this to your spicy stews, top it all off with a cocktail and a glass of wine, hit the theater, and in no time at all you’ll be wishing you were dead! We highly recommend you have a large supply in your cupboard at all times!

LiesaDay1291.jpg

Next, I want to show you a nifty little system we’ve developed right here at Walt Disney World. It’s called the Hydroponic Gro Tank. We pump in all kinds of nutrients into the water (you can buy that solution, actually, at a supply store from a sheet I will give to you at the end of our tour) and then grow our plants right in the water. No soil necessary!

LiesaDay1292.jpg

<LARGE CRASHING NOISE, followed by screaming child>

OOPSIE! Didn’t listen to that part of the rules, huh?? I’m sorry your child is now wet and my display in completely SMASHED!!

<VERY embarrassed mother hugs child and profusely apologizes for ruined hydroponic box>

Time to move along. PLEASE watch your children!!

These baby Mealtime Torture Devices are growing in a Hydroponic Gro Tank- see all that environmentally safe Styrofoam??

LiesaDay1293.jpg

A lot of the food we grow here goes directly to the restaurants around WDW. We throw in some really cool tricks to make the kids eat their veggies. Of course, they don’t taste any better, but don’t tell them that! To make our famous MouseEar cucumbers

LiesaDay1295.jpg

we simply slip on this plastic mold

LiesaDay1294.jpg

much like your Great Aunt did in trying to improve her shape 50 years ago. Much cheaper and easier than liposuction!

You can imagine it gets pretty hot in here! And we’ve developed a great way to cool things off. We run water through these corrugated walls of metal, then blow air across the water and out over the greenhouse structure and all the plants. Works much like a cold shower- eh, hem…

LiesaDay1296.jpg

And because we keep things just right for our plants, providing them with protective beasties, cooling them off when needed and keeping the kids from SITTING ON THEM!, they grow to enormous sizes and shapes!! Did you know that one of our Cherry Tomato Trees won a Guiness Book certificate??

LiesaDay1299.jpg

The next few pictures will just show you more of the variety of the Garden Goodies we have on hand.

LiesaDay1297.jpg

LiesaDay1300.jpg

LiesaDay1303.jpg

LiesaDay1302.jpg

LiesaDay1304.jpg

LiesaDay1305.jpg

LiesaDay1301.jpg

LiesaDay1318.jpg

Imagine the pies you could make with one of these- (“Lady, do I need to remind you to watch your child?”)

LiesaDay1306.jpg

Now, the last area I will show you today, as your POST HOST, is the Aquaculture Room. This is an exciting place, but please, do not let you children sit on the sides of these displays. I hate to think of what may happen if they do!

Here at the Aquaculture Center, we grow Alligators, Tilapia and Sturgeon, Crayfish, and American Eel. The place stinks because not only are there fish, but they are eating:

LiesaDay1313.jpg

Dogfood!?

We POST HOSTS who work here have actually learned the hard way NOT to insult the animals. They are listening to every word you say, so WATCH IT!!

LiesaDay1309.jpg

LiesaDay1312.jpg

This poor unfortunate soul had a little spat with the Mrs. and is now relegated to the shrimphouse.

LiesaDay1307.jpg

The Mrs. got the condo in the settlement.

LiesaDay1308-1.jpg

Now, it’s time for what all the kids have been waiting for!! Kids, are you ready to feed the fish?? Here, please take some dogfood, and on the count of 1,2,3, you’re going to throw it into the Tilapia tank!

1

2

3

FOOOOOOOOOOOD FIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!!

LiesaDay1315.jpg

Isn’t that something?? 1,000 fish fighting for the same 100 pieces of smelly dogfood. Kind of like a kindergarten class and two blue crayons.

Before we conclude our time together, we have a few displays from our tropical area where we grow vanilla, dragonfruit, breadfruit and other tasty tropical delights. I’d like to leave you with a picture of the most impressive male anatomy nature has to offer.

LiesaDay1316.jpg

Like a closer look?

LiesaDay1317.jpg

Well, Ladies , Gentlemen, and Children, it’s been wonderful having you along so you could break my displays, and learn all about the things of gardening that you’ll never have the resources or inclination to try at home. Please come back and visit me anytime! The restrooms are to you left on the way out.

LiesaDay1319.jpg

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:Now that was a twist on the Behind the Seeds tour. Bravo!

So one question, What did you think? Was it worth it? I have always been curious about this tour but really can't figure out if its worth taking the extra time.

That sure doesn't look like our garden.

We love Brussel Sprouts, but have a hard time growing them...they tend to get buggy.

Excellent posts about the Land. I find it all fascinating, actually, and you only made it more so...oh, and funny, too! Brussel sprouts are one of my favorite vegetables and I wouldn't mind hooking up some a hydorponic gro tank of my own. All the b. sprouts I could handle. :lmao:

Also, great news about going back to school. Its always wonderful to have a new direction to follow. Good luck!

Oh my word! This update is hilarious! You've definitely given another look to the Behind the Seeds tour!

Who knew that Tilapia enjoyed dog food so much! Wait a sec, doesn't dog food contain fish? Wouldn't that be considered cannibalism?;) Ewwww!

Now, for those of you who are begging for a gall bladder attack, we have searched the world over for you, and have found the amazing little “curry plant”. Add a little of this to your spicy stews, top it all off with a cocktail and a glass of wine, hit the theater and in no time at all you’ll be wishing you were dead! We highly recommend you have a large supply in your cupboard at all times!

Oh dear, Liesa I hope you weren't indulging in this meal! BTW, how are you feeling these days??
