The 9 Day Birthday Feast w/pics! Updated 9/5

Can't wait to hear more!!

I cant believe you got carded? I never bring my license into the park, better not happen to me this year!!:rotfl:

Keep it coming......

Thanks for all the positive feedback! :goodvibes My sister did order her glowtini by saying with great satisfaction - "I brought my ID, I'll have that glowtini!" But the waitress told her she didn't need it! She also didn't card my husband, either. My BIL, bless his soul, ordered a rootbeer float because he felt bad for me. Made up for some of the Disney-hating! :)

On to the next installment...breakfast at Artist's Palette. I loved, loved, loved the Mickey Waffles and bacon at Old Port Royale. We would get them with strawberry sauce and whipped cream and eat them at one of the tables by the pool while listening to Jimmy Buffet; it was a great way to start the day. I had been craving them for eight months. I took the kids to our 'private dining room' while the other adults went to order. When my Mickey Waffles arrived, there was no strawberry sauce or whipped cream. My husband said they didn't have any -- I am not sure if that means they were out or if it is no longer available, but, *sigh*, no strawberries for me. The waffle itself seemed dried out, but edible. But what really threw me was the bacon. I like my bacon on the crispy side, I've even been known to burn the bacon 'accidentally on purpose' - those darn carcinogens don't fend me off! But even I couldn't eat the burnt cardboard strips soaked in grease that they called bacon. It didn't even taste remotely like bacon. It didn't taste remotely like anything! YUCK! My niece had the sausage and it didn't look much better. Here's a borrowed pic:

My DH got the western omelet. Do you remember the Pixar Short where Luxo Jr is jumping on the pixar ball until it deflates, and then he's trying to flip it up and it just flops lifelessly back down? That's what this omelet looked like, flat and lifeless, except it seemed to be oozing grease from every crevice. Needless to say he didn't like it. And I was not about to try it to confirm his opinion. He took one bite and made that face my daughter makes at me when I make her try something new that she doesn't like. She looks at me with her face all bunched up, food still in her mouth, eyes that scream "I REALLY DON'T LIKE THIS -- PLEASE DON'T MAKE ME SWALLOW IT!!!" (She makes that face later on...wait for it...it's hysterical!") In one word -- GROSS!

Now, in the interest of full disclosure, I have to say that we barely made breakfast (The kids kept us up late watching Underdog! :happytv: and it took like an hour of rubbing blue creme eyeshadow over my daughter's face and arms for her Star Wars costume!) So maybe we were getting the bottom of the barrel leftovers and it was not typical, I'm not sure, but we waited until we got to the parks to eat breakfast the rest of the trip.

Next installment...Hollywood Brown Derby and the Stars Wars Cake With Flowers!

We had 4:40 dinner reservations for the Fantasmic dinner package at the Hollywood Brown Derby. My sis and BIL wanted to try and squeeze in a little Epcot in between dinner and Fantasmic, so I went to the counter to ask if I could move up my reservation, and they graciously moved my reservation up to 3:30pm. I am pretty sure that is when they begin serving dinner because the dining room was empty and we had no wait at all for our table. Gilberto, our waiter, was wonderful; provided excellent, friendly service. We never had to wait for a refill (which we really appreciated after waiting an hour and a half in the sun for Luke and Leia's autographs!), and he went above and beyond for us. I would highly recommend requesting him!

After reading many positive reviews of it, I had been dying to try the Cobb salad for years, but my husband would never share it with me and it is on the menu as 'for two.' I thought I could con my sister into splitting it with me, but alas, she wanted the market greens salad instead. I mentioned it in jest to Gilberto when I was ordering and he excused himself. :confused3 He came back a moment later and said "the chef asked me to tell you he will make you a smaller portion cobb salad if you like." :yay: And it was every bit as good as advertised! I was surprised, though, that it goes well beyond a chopped salad, it is practically MINCED. Here is another *borrowed with no copyright infringement intended* picture

See what I mean?

My sister also loved her salad, which looked delicious. Borrowed pic:

For dinner, I had the salmon with gorgonzola and balsamic glaze. It was very good, the salmon was moist without being slimy, and the sauce was excellent and paired well with it. The polenta it was served with was very good as well, moist and flavorful but not overpowering.

My husband had the crab cake appetizer, which he said was okay, but not great.

For dinner, he chose the filet mignon with the garlic roasted potatoes. He ordered it medium, and was very pleased with it. Borrowed pic:

The kids decided to be adventurous. Instead of chicken nuggets (not a choice), they ordered...hot dogs! They also got the chicken soup as an appetizer. I tried some of my daughters and thought it was very good.

I had whispered to Gilberto that we had ordered a Star Wars themed cake from the cake hotline and he said they were preparing it, and then proceeded to take everyone's dessert order. Since we got the Fantasmic dinner package, dessert is included. I didn't take that into consideration when I ordered the birthday cake. So Two Desserts for Everyone! :thumbsup2

Gilberto brought out the cake with several CMs and we all sang Happy Birthday (for the second time!) :bday:Here is a picture of the Star Wars Cake...

Something missing, you say? Jedis, you see not? Agree, I would. (Okay, I'll stop the Yoda speak now!:yoda: ) I asked Gilberto what happened and he didn't know, so he asked the manager to come over, who explained that when you order a cake from the hotline, they are supposed to send over the 'stuff' for the restaurant to make it with and they didn't send it, so they did what they could. The cake was delicious -- white cake with a vanilla pudding layer in the middle, the icing was not too sweet. But I was still disappointed. Luckily, the kids didn't know what they were supposed to get, so the only one disappointed was me.

The real desserts came shortly after. Not that we ate much of them! I had my favorite -- the grapefruit cake! So light and refreshing. And it paired perfectly with the most delicious pomegranate martini on the planet!

Husband had the creme brulee, which he liked. Sister had the Bananas Foster tower, which she loved! Borrowed pic:

The other side of the family thought it was very good, but overpriced. We didn't think so. We loved our dinner there and it will continue to be one of our must-dos! Unfortunately the rest of our day didn't go as well, a storm blew in so we didn't make it to Epcot and Fantasmic was canceled. :umbrella:

Up Next: He Did NOT just do that!!!

Loving your reviews.:thumbsup2 I can't wait to hear more.

Your reviews are informative and fun to read. What fun to celebrate the dual birthdays!

I'm lovin' your reviews! I feel sorry for you about the martini, there's nothing worse than traveling with your own kids in the summer FL heat and not being able to drink :lmao: Keep 'em coming!

I am really glad you are enjoying them. The kids really loved sharing their birthdays together!

I wanted that martini SO BAD!!! The kids weren't really bothering me at that point, except for all the chocolate facials from the ice cream, it was the grown ups that were getting on my nerves!

What a pity about the cake but at least it was yummy :thumbsup2
It really was yummy but I was heartbroken. I had researched the cake thread here on the boards, spent forever on the phone with the cake hotline, and even called just before we left to verify everything was okay. Oh well...the best laid plans and all that.

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR THE POSITIVE FEEDBACK! I really appreciate it!!! :goodvibes I will get another update to you soon -- hopefully tonight, work permitting.

Okay, so after spending the morning with our guests at the pool, switching rooms from the 2 bedroom to the studio, and seeing them off, we head to one of our favorite parks - Animal Kingdom. My degree is in wildlife biology and I spent the pre-children part of my life doing conservation research, so naturally we are a family of animal lovers. DD wants to be a vet when she grows up, although she's still not ready to handle the whole Circle of Life thing yet. For example, she makes me turn off Survivorman the moment Les makes even an attempt to catch/eat anything that moves!

Anywho -- quick run to Fast Pass Kilimanjaro Safari and then cut across Discovery Island for lunch at Flame Tree Barbeque. We had never been here before, but after reading all the great reviews of this place, I was on a mission!

After getting our food my husband heads for the first, packed, seating area he sees. "Oh no - keep going!" I tell him until we get to the last seating area with a fabulous view of the water and Expedition Everest and only one or two other tables occupied. "You're very proud of yourself, aren't you?" he asks. Why yes, I am, thanks for asking! DIS geekhood - Justified! :cool2: We grab a primo table by the water's edge and dig in!

I ordered the smoked chicken, my DH had the ribs, and DD got -- what else -- a hot dog. We started taking pics of the food at this point, but I can't find this day's food pics to save my life, so I stole another pic off of photobucket for you:

The food here was fabulous! I tried my DH's ribs, which fell off the bone and the sauce was the perfect combination of sweet and tang. My smoked chicken was very moist and the smoked bbq flavor was out of this world! I even ate some of the skin, which I never do, but it was crispy and delicious! The corn muffins were great as well; did not even require butter. Baked beans were just standard Bush's baked beans fare - good, not great. For dessert we all had the frozen lemonade, which was a perfect choice in the blistering heat!

So we had a great lunch and are relaxing, watching the turtles, enjoying the view and slurping on our rapidly melting frozen lemonades when this custodian CM walks behind me and throws something over the railing into the water. My first thought is 'maybe he's feeding the turtles' until I see that the 'food' is moving; no sooner did the realization hit that what I was looking at was a lizard frantically struggling to stay afloat when an incredibly large fish jumps up and swallows it whole! :scared1: Luckily, this all happened in a split second and my daughter didn't see what happened. She LOVES those little lizards! I looked in shock at my husband, whose jaw was dropped. "He DID NOT just do that?!?"

I was reading someone else's trip report before I left who was talking about their inner Donald Duck going off when some injustice had occurred. Boy, could I relate at that moment because while I was trying to keep calm on the outside so my DD didn't catch on, on the inside Donald was quacking and jumping up and down like nobody's business! My DH, assessing my reaction, starts cleaning up as quickly as he possibly can to get me out of there before I make a scene when this idiot announces to everyone "Caught Another Live One!" and heads back to the railing. Seems he was catching them with those pick-up sticks they get trash off the ground with. I step in front of him, put my hand out crossing-guard style and say in my firmest, calmest voice "Stop! My daughter DOES NOT need to see that. It is cruel and inappropriate. Go set him free." He didn't say a word, but took him over to the other side and tossed him into the trees (or quite honestly, may have thrown him into the water's edge from there, but I am hoping not) and high-tailed it out of there. I tried to catch his name but he did an amazing job of hiding his nametag from me. My DH scooted me out of there before Donald won and I chased him down and threw HIM overboard. :furious:

Flame Tree Barbeque will now be on our must-do list of restaurants - for the great food, the awesome view, and also because I will be on the lookout for that CM so I can turn him in!

Up Next: Just 'cause it's the most expensive doesn't mean it's the best!

Flametree looks good, and I'm so glad you stopped the CM from throwing the lizard in the water. How cruel and pointless!

Any sort of animal cruelty really upsets me, and I think my DH would have also had to have held me back.

I am onboard!! Cant wait to hear more!
