The 5 trips of My "Disney Free Year" - A Mermaid, A Buzz, A Boat and A Steak - 7/8

Oh no....I really didn't see that one coming!!! You're right, there are absolutely worse places than Disney to be ditched, but oh I wouldn't have been thrilled about that turn of events either!!!

I sincerely hope you decided to stay and adopt the mindset of "I'm going to have the super-awesomest time ever, and now my trip is going to be even MORE awesome!"

Yeah, I've got to admit... I didn't see it either. I really believed that he'd be on the 7pm flight. It was not the best moment in our marriage.

Part of me was like "I'm not going to give him the satisfaction of ruining my trip too " But even in Disney it was hard not to be sad.

Oh my gosh! I can't even imagine!

I do hope you stayed and made the most of it!

I did stay, and while it might not be my favorite trip ever... I did manage to have fun. I think it's harder to stay upset than it is to just have fun.

OH NO! I hope you stayed and had a good time! I would have be sad, but I think I would try to do some things that new!

On the cute side of things, I started my TR!

I did have some new experiences. I had been wanting to do a solo trip for a while. I just wish it had been a little less on-the-spot.

Yay. You started your TR... I know what I'm doing tonight! :surfweb:

oh my. I'm so sorry.

:goodvibes Thanks! It wasn't the best moment of the trip that's for sure.

Wow. That just blindsided me reading it, I couldn't imagine how you felt when it actually happened to you. I'm so sorry. :sad2:

You are right though, there are worse places to be ditched then Disney. You're right though, planning a solo trip is different then being ditched on a trip. Not cool man, not cool.

Yeah... he didn't really get that. On the plus side when I got home, I had an extra-super-duper attentive husband for like 3 weeks :rotfl:

Saturday morning, I woke up pretty early and blinked a few times, hoping the day before was just a nightmare. It was, but unfortunately... I wasn't dreaming.

I had decided the night before to give the solo-thing a try. Now I was faced with what to do. It was too late to upgrade the one day park-hopper I'd bought the day before, and buying another 2 day park-hopper outright was a little too rich for my blood. So I was stuck with one park passes. Not ideal for the solo traveler. But I was going to try to make it work. I was really discombobulated and honestly had no idea if I would stay or go home. I wasn't even sure if I wanted to be there.

DSCN1855.jpg

Since I now had no plan what so ever - I decided to take the morning easy and then head to the MK. I was awake, but not ready to go to the park, so I decided to go for breakfast.

I realized that the most convienent bus stop was actually at the main building so, I headed over there.

DSCN1857.jpg

I really had no idea where to go or what to do, but then I remembered a “conversation” I had with Stringbean and she told me her favorite breakfast was at the Grand Floridian Café. And Nory said that she preferred dining at sit-down resturants when alone vs. counter service. Well if it’s good enough for them, I figured it would be good enough for me! Finally a destination in mind, and I was determined to give the whole dining alone thing a try.

Armed with my nook (remember, Chris has my ipod…grrrrrrr) I took a bus to the MK, and then hopped on the monorail to the Grand Floridian.

DSCN1858.jpg

I’m not so sure about this…

DSCN1859.jpg

I figured this was my big test. I don't like eating alone. Food is a very social experience for me, and eating alone always feels so lonely. If I just couldn’t do it, I’d see if I could change my flight and leave early. No pressure GFC. No pressure at all.

DSCN1861.jpg

By the time I arrived, it was 10:00, so the rush had died down considerably. I walked up to the hostess stand and feebly told her I needed a table for 1. She didn’t blink or stare, she just told me it would be a few minutes. Maybe I could do this…

DSCN1862.jpg

I was seated quickly at a nice table for 2, near a wall, but not in the back corner so my soloness wouldn’t contaminate anyone. All in all, a great table for solo-eating. In fact, of the 4 solo sit-down meals I had, this was by far the best table in terms of not making me feel awkward.

DSCN1863.jpg

So I sat down, and pulled out my nook and read while I waited for my breakfast. I got the lobster eggs benedict. I figured on the off-chance that this was my last meal in Disney (it wasn’t!) I’d go out in style.

DSCN1864.jpg

OMG it was ridiculously delicious. I was quite full after 1 egg, but I just couldn’t stop eating and I ate the whole thing. I may or may not have licked the plate…

Yes, it was rich, but the chunks of lobster and the focaccia bread were just yum. Seriously. I could go on for days about how delicious this breakfast was. Definitely going on the January list.

DSCN1865.jpg

As for the solo experience, it was nice. There were people in the restaurant, but it wasn’t packed, and the position of the table had me out of the way, but not secluded. The waitress was great, she’d come and stop by the table and talk for a bit, in between. Not intrusive, just perfect.

After that delicious experience, I decided that I was going to stay. I still wasn’t in the best mood in the world, but I had decided I would give the parks a try.

Yay! For an experience that would make or break your staying, I'm glad that it went well and you decided to stay.

I've had a phobia of doing things alone for years, but I've slowly but surely gotten over it. I've often thought of doing a solo WDW trip.

I'm so glad you decided to stay!! I'll admit, I was a little bit nervous when you said you decided to try GFC on my recommendation - I always get nervous when recommending places to people, and I especially wanted you to have a good experience there that morning!! I'm so happy you had a good breakfast there, and that you didn't feel too uncomfortable!! I'm hoping the rest of your trip goes nice and smoothly!

Those Muppet posters are awesome. I love the Beek-E one. :rotfl:

WOW, that really sucks that Chris didn't come! :sad2: I'm glad you decided to stay though.

Me too! I think I would have regretted leaving.

I too have had a phobia of being alone for years and years, but have been working on being better about being alone. I think if this would have happened a few years ago I would have gone straight home. I too have wanted (and still do) to do a (planed) solo trip too!

Haha, that would have been awful I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have worded it like "Stringbean told me to go here and it was horrible, and ruined my trip so I went home" Fortunately, it turned out to be my favorite dining experience of the trip!

Those Muppet posters are awesome. I love the Beek-E one. :rotfl:

I just love the muppets. It's too bad those posters are so hidden, they're so clever!

Yeah, it was sad. It took a while, but I am glad I stayed too!

After breakfast, I wandered around the GF for a while.

DSCN1866.jpg

Thank you Grand Floridian, you did not disappoint!

DSCN1868.jpg

Before I went to the park, I had a mission – find a bag. In every day life, I just carry a little wristlet, and I never use a bag in Disney, so I didn’t bring one. But since I now had to carry my nook with me, I needed a bag. Istarted a the Grand Floridian. They had a nice Steve Madden bag, on sale… for $80. But I wasn’t in love with it, so I kept looking.

They did have my Dooney & Bourke bag. I can’t tell you how close I came to wallowing in my sorrow and buying myself the $240 bag. But I just couldn’t do it. I think if I hadn’t just spent $200 on a spa treatment, I may have bought it – but I had, so I kept looking.

I came up short at the Grand Floridian, so I figured that since Queenie wasn’t with me to steal my find at the BouTiki from under my nose, that was my next best bet. So off to the monorail I went…

If you can’t find it at the Boutiki you’re screwed right?

DSCN1876.jpg

DSCN1877.jpg

I love this wallet. I should have bought it! But it wasn’t what I was looking for.

DSCN1879.jpg

Unfortunately, the Tiki guides failed me, and I didn’t find anything I liked at the Poly either. I’m pretty sure this dude is laughing at me.

DSCN1880.jpg

So, I decided to head to the Magic Kingdom and pick something up on Main Street. But it was like 10 am and I’d been on the monorail twice already, so I headed over to the boat for a change of pace.

Yay for a good breakfast! I'm glad you decided to stay. I know it wasn't at all what you were expecting...but I guess you were able to do it your way?! I hope you found a cute bag! I'm sure you did!

That breakfast was sooo good... I'm still dreaming about it!

I am glad I stayed. It took me a little longer to be okay with it than I would have liked, but it was okay.

It was jammy-packed. Holy people batman.

DSCN1901.jpg

My first mission was to find a bag to store my nook.I felt like Goldilocks.

This one doesn’t have the right straps.

DSCN1903.jpg

Mickey’s face scares me on this one.

DSCN1904.jpg

This one is doesn’t have a zipper.

DSCN1905.jpg

Neither does this one.

DSCN1906.jpg

This one would have been kickin’ in 1983

DSCN1910.jpg

Ugh…I came up empty on Main Street too!

Why are you smilin’ Mickey. I want to give you my money, but you don’t have what I need!

DSCN1911.jpg

DSCN1912.jpg

Queenie called me during my search, and baselessly told me that I’d find a purse at the shop outside of Pirates, so I headed to Adventureland.

Why is it that when you need something, you can't find it? And yet when you don't need it, it's everywhere?! Darn logic!

Oooohs and Awwwws. lol. I wish that bag with the black and white design had had a zipper and maybe that the handle had been out of the same black and white fabrics. :rotfl2:

Would you believe that I found a bag that I wanted at the Publix store on the way to Disney, but me in my infinite wisdom decided I could find a better one at Disney.

No, the one I didn't get WAS the one I wanted! UGH. I did get a cute one, but I regret not geting to one at the store!

The fact that the straps on this bag are pretty much useless would have been ignored in my mind. And the odd baby-blue color. I just love the little cartoons all over it. (Especially the one where Minnie looks all mad at Mickey and he's like "what did I do??")

This is a lot of handbag searching you're doing here! Did you end up trying World of Disney? That store HAS to have something!

Hi Joanna!

I'm ridiculously late, but finally here to read about your last trip. I can't believe Chris missed his flight not once, but twice!!!

I'm really sorry that your solo trip ended up being forced upon you. But I bet you ended up having some fun, anyway...so I'm glad the GFC breakfast sucked you in!

Whenever we fly separately, I'm always panicked my DH will miss his flight, too, considering the man can sleep through anything (he once slept through six firemen battering down a thick door only twenty feet from our bed, while the apartment filled with smoke and every alarm in the building was going off!). He hasn't missed a flight yet, though, somehow (I'm knocking on wood right now). If only I could get that man to wake up in the morning like a normal human being, I seriously think his life would get way better! :rotfl:

I know right. last trip there were a ton of bags I really wanted. I blame than darn Murphy!!

I concour. That pattern is so cute. they have a suitcase with it that I very much want. But the pink straps didn't do it for me. It's my fault, I wanted a bag :rotfl:

Ugh I hate when that happens! It drives me crazy! Why is it always that way. I try to live by if you see it and like it buy it, but my head always messes with me!

I totally agree. I think if I didn't have a specific purpose for the bag in mind, I would have found a bag I loved very quickly!

i was trying not to leave the MK. When I eventually made it to WOD, I found a few that would have worked. Oh well. Darn logic

Hi Nory!

Don't you hate that life gets in the way of DIS time!

Chris is very much the same way about sleeping. I was (rightfully) worried, but I never believed he actually would. I know what you mean, it's scary how non-functioning he can be in the morning. That's what scares me about potential children. I know I can't count on him for late night emergencies :rotfl:

As I was walking by, the pre-show for the Tiki Room was starting, so I decided to check it out, since it’s one of those attractions Chris has very little interest in.

With that song officially stuck in my head, I headed over to POC, to continue my search for a bag.

haha. I love the Tiki room! I'm one of those weirdo's that misses the old school versions of everything, but updating couldn't really hurt how much I loved the Tikis.

I do love that they keep some of the classics around. New is good, but there's something so comforting about the Tiki birds. I also liked it much better now that the "new management" has been given the boot. Iago's voice just hits a nerve that makes me twitch

As I was leaving the show, I ran into these guys. Remember them….

DSCN1956.jpg

I hopped in one of the stores along the way and I saw this bag. It had real possibilities. It was the right size, it had a good strap and it was under $30. In short, it met all my requirements. But I’m not a huge vynlmation fan and I wasn’t sure I would use it after this trip. So I held off…

DSCN1957.jpg

I had high hopes for the POC shop, so I headed that way.

I think this is the right orientation for this photo??

DSCN1962.jpg

I bet the post office just loves when people send these! I’m not going to lie, I so want someone to send me one, how fun is that!

DSCN1963.jpg

Unfortunately, the coconut-postcard was the only thing I found in the shop, so I still had my nook in hand. But since I was there, I decided to hop into line.

DSCN1964.jpg

I was SHOCKED with how many people were there. Last labor day weekend, it was nice and empty, but this year, HOLEY MOLEY. The POC line was 20 minutes. I’m notused to these kinds of lines!

DSCN1972.jpg

I waited. I got into the boat. We moved about 2 feet, and then we sat. And sat. And sat. For about 15 minutes. The ride broke down and we had to be evacuated.

Normally, this wouldn’t have even fazed me, but I felt like this was a personal affront. The universe telling me I should just go home and crawl into a hole.

Still bagless and totally depressed, I wandered some more. I was crabby, it was hot and it was so crowded. I really was about to give up and just go back to SSR. I was really hot, so I grabbed a vitamin water and the CM was chatting away about Fraggle Rock and Disney restaurants. That got me less crabby, then I sat down and the band came out. I took a picture of the banjo player, and he came over and started talking to me too.

DSCN1974.jpg

DSCN1973.jpg

The Sousaphone player was from Wisconsin!

This is why I love Disney. I was massively crabby, and I had 2 back-to-back cast member experiences that just beat the crabbiness out of me.

Next, I ducked into the Hall of Presidents for an air conditioned crowd break.

DSCN1974.jpg

DSCN1976.jpg

I really couldn’t do a ride without a bag, I was carrying my nook around like a total dork.
