The 2009 American Idol Thread....

By the way, a song DioGuardi co-wrote is currently #2 at ZMP; Sober by P!nk.

I kind of agree with disneybound2010. For me last seasons treatment of Jason Castro revealed that the show obviously has a scripted agenda. I can't see anyone actually believing that the show is being objective after Paula read a review of Jason's song before he had actually performed. And you know, the show never gave him apology but followed up with various and contradictory explanations and then apologized to Paula? I also had questions about how the big finale was put together. Logically it just looked like it was too scripted ahead of time to have been left to the voters' choice. The whole Andrew Loyd Weber and boxing analogy would not have worked with just any of the contestants. I don't think that they would be able to line up Weber or the other talent with one weeks notice. Everything was just too planned toward who the producers obviously wanted to win.

If I watch, it will now be with amusement as to how they are manipulating a gullible public. I can no longer see it as a fair assessment of how we value talent.

I've watched it since season 1 and this is how I've viewed it since season 2. I think most see it this way. It's fun entertainment - nothing more. I don't think it's ever been a fair assessment. It's pretty much a popularity contest. It's a fun one, however, and I watch every episode with the exception of auditons. I don't enjoy watching people get made fun of or humiliated.

I'm looking forward to this season. I think the new judge will add an interesting mix to a predictable panel. Can't way to see who the plant is and who fits into each "role". Also I like that they will have an extra week in Hollywood and the group auditions.

I am actually most excited about the new judge and format. Should inject some freshness into the show. I am also very excited about the attraction at DHS. I listened to a review on a podcast (ITM) this week about the stage and set at DHS and even though the reviewer isn't a fan of the show, he was very impressed with what hesaw. He got to do a behind the scenes tour of the new show building.

I don't know if I'll be as dedicated a viewer this season since every other season has proven to be terrible. I appreciate them removing the freak show aspects of it since a lot of those people were clearly disturbed and don't need to be devastated in the manner they are. As for those wanting to make fools out of themselves they can go on the gong show.

This show needs to get back to what it's all about. The generic reality show contestants singing for us.

The Heartthrob
The Young Kid
The Pretty Girl
The Rock N Roll Girl/Guy
The R&B Girl/Guy
The Hot Chick
The Gay Dude
The Culturally Detached Girl/Guy
The Overtly Religious Girl/Guy

That pretty much covers the top 12. It's a well known fact the contestants are chosen based upon personality, musical style, and talent. In that order.

We LOVE LOVE LOVE American Idol and cant wait for it to begin!
I am a huge Clay Aiken, Daughtry, David Cook fan!!!

I say change that word to "belief".

I say change that word to "belief".

I stand by my claims that this is a fact. It's all about ratings.

On an unrelated note.

I just heard a couple of ArchieBOT songs and I'm not surprised that they're identical. I watched two videos to the end thinking R. Kelly was going to make an appearance but he didn't. Probably because there weren't any closets featured in either video.

On a production note I think the producers could have covered up the use of autotune a little better. The kid can hit most of him notes. I think leaving as much of his actual vocals in tact would lend some honesty to his album performance. We all know the kid can sing. A few pitch mistakes are very humanizing and are really what his fans have come to love him for.

David Cook's album is really good. I won't say awesome because it's not but it is really good. If Michael Johns ever gets his album out I'm sure it will also rock my socks off.

Gotta add in a country person in there. There is always a country singer in the mix. Otherwise we wouldn't have had to suffer thru Kristy Lee Cook this past season. :scared: Other than that I think it's a good list!

I like Michael Johns too and I hope his album released someday. Right now he has an original single called Another Christmas which is available on iTunes and Amazon and part of the profits will go to charity.

We'll be watching again this season. Glad to hear they aren't going to show as much of the terrible singers during the auditions.

Will have to make sure to get the DVR set so we don't miss anything.

The ONLY reason I watched last season was Jason Castro.I caught him accidentally the first nite, while flipping thru channels. It was instant fandom. I hadn't watched religiously before that and after he left the show I stopped watching. I don't see myself watching this season at all.

I heard Casto's brother auditioned. Not sure if he made it or not.

Paula was reading notes from rehearsal. Really she shouldn't be looking at those notes because we don't want to hear her comments on something we haven't seen. As far as the finale, I really don't think it's hard for the AI Machine to whip up something for it at the last minute. I sure they had a backup for if Syesha (was she the 3rd one?) had mad the top 2. The David's were obvious fan favorites so it wasn't surprising that they were in the top 2.

And it could never be even remotely fair unless everyone was only allowed to vote once.

I agree with that.

I'm not sure if I'll get into it this season. I LOVED last season. Loved David Cook, Michael Johns, and Carly Smithson. The previous season...I was not a fan. Blake and Jordin were just awful. And so were pretty much all of the other contestants. So if this season is like that one...I won't be watching much.

I don't expect a contestant more annoying than Blake but I've been wrong before. I do expect a winner along the lines of Jordin Sparks though. They'll most likely have a short career that takes them all the way to a Christmas album later in the year.

Geez, imagine if he had actually won! He's a street performer at best, IMO. I hope we get a REAL rocker to win this time.... IMO, that isn't David Cook.

I prefer a pop rocker like Cook than a "real" rocker. I like Cook's voice a lot. And thankfully he knows how to control his vibrato (unlike that God-awful Daughtry. Eek!)

I don't think AI has ever been about "how we value talent". It has always been about "who we like", and there is no question that promoters always have a say in prompting us to like who they consider those with whom they can make the most money. That's the American Way, and this is American Idol.

I've always taken the show at face value. The viewers are manipulated, especially by Simon. I don't think it has ever been a real singing competiton, it is partly that but so much more.

I am totally enjoying David Cook's CD. I play it a lot. It's funny though because I did not like him during the auditions. The first time he caught my attention was with "Hello". Michael Johns..can't remember a single song he samg during the show.

I think I only sort of noticed him in the beginning. And mostly because he auditioned in Omaha, which is basically where I live.

*sigh* I remember watching some of the Omaha auditions last January in our room at Port Orleans Riverside. I miss that place.

What days of the week is the show on? Perhaps we'll catch some of the auditions at our hotel at Disneyland this time. :)

I think it's on Tuesdays and Wednesdays still.
