The $10,000 dog...

When we bought our dog, he was 1k and we had to drive to Montana to get him (about $150).

I complained the whole time how a dog should not cost that much etc.

Well, looking back, that was just the tip of the iceburg! I was sitting here figuring out how much we have had to pay since getting our little buddy a little over a year ago.....So, before you complain about the cost of purchasing a dog, think about how much the pet will cost in the long run!!!

There has also been shampoo, food dishes, pet tags, nail clippings, one teeth cleaning, a pooper scoop, the labor of having to install chicken wire around fence so he can't dig out, a new vacuum for his hair, about $40 worth of thos e pet hair remover roller things, 3 ruined shirts from his claws tearing the material, grass seed to reseed where he peed and ruined the lawn and where he ran all the grass away...and I'm sure I've forgotten stuff.

So for us....over the past year, owning a dog has cost us well over 10k that we otherwise would not have spent.

I had no idea what I was getting into when we got the little guy!!

But...he was so worth it. But it is something to think about if you are getting a dog, they are not cheap!!!

I will bet that I have surpassed that by now. Boarding for vacations, vet bills and now add laundry detergent!!

I am telling you!!! We got 2 of them. We are up to about 5,000+ so far. We will have them for 1 year July 6th.

DH is out back repairing the fence that one of the dogs ATE, about 6 boards.

You know, there are many wonderful free dogs at the pound that can make your life wonderful

Yup, they're expen$ive, but worth it!!

Your list is a good illustration of the costs involved, though, for anyone thinking about getting a pet for the first time.

Oh..and it wasn't free...there was still a $130 adoption fee from the shelter.


And when you go to the shelter..smallish dogs or puppies are almost never there. They are almost always very large, active lab or pitbull mixes...which would probably be great with another family, but would not fit in our house or lifestyle.

I researched breeds extensively after the biting incident. I know all dog breeds can bite, but some are more kid friendly than others.

We have 1 dog now and thank heavens she isn't a chewer. I imagine she has only cost us $400-$500n so far this year on food, grooming, boarding for a weekend or 2, and getting her teeth cleaned.
