That poor child :(

not all Europeans would ever consider leaving their child alone anywhere, so don't tar us all with the same brush, In my family if you have children they come with you be it in a buggy etc, or no one goes at all

I wasn't trying to be critical, really. Some people had expressed surprise that parents would leave young children, and I was remembering a particular incident and wondering if perhaps it was just a cultural thing.

I'm sure that parents in Europe are just like parents in America in that some are very protective and some are moderate, and some are very relaxed.

I do think that America has tougher laws about leaving children unattended than other countries.

Out of interest what is the age you can legally leave a child alone in the US?

Susan

Depends on the state/city. In our area (Dallas suburbs) as far as I know there is no set age. But when we lived in Virginia, the minimum age to be left unattended was 10.

I guess the parents didn't consider sitting across the road the same as leaving their children alone.

I have read that the Portuguese Authorities are likely to charge the Parents for leaving the children alone. Obviously now would not be the right time to do it.
