Thanksgiving- the forgotten holiday

What is it with the stores and Thanksgiving? :confused3 Every store I've been in has gone right from Halloween to Christmas. Yesterday I went to at least five different stores in search of placemats. I was looking for something cute, possibly with a turkey or fall leaf design. I ended up finding placemats at Walmart that have orange, brown, and beige stripes.

No store had specific areas set up with Thanksgiving/Fall merchandise. Not even The Christmas Tree Shop! Everyone had Halloween stuff at 50% off, and everyone had tons and tons of Christmas stuff. A few stores were playing Christmas music.

Now, I love Christmas and everything that goes with it, but I like to enjoy each holiday and season as it comes along. October is Halloween, November is Thanksgiving, and December is Christmas/Hanukkah. Okay, Christmas music can commence the day after Thanksgiving, but that's it. :)

I just don't want to rush right into Christmas the day after Halloween. Thanksgiving is such a nice, warm, friendly, family holiday. It should be the calm before the storm. :teeth:

Really?

Our Bed, Bath and Beyond has an entire display of placemats, napkins, tablecloths, etc., all Thanksgiving related. If I'm not mistaken, I believe Target also has Thanksgiving motif items.

I completely agree! I love Thanksgiving too and want to enjoy this month of pumkin pie yankee candles burning, my autumn tablecloths and wreaths, and Mum's on my front porch. I couldn't find autumn stuff at Christmas tree shop either.
I don't understand the rush to Christmas, and what irritates me more is how the day after Christmas, there is no more Christmas music and the season just ends abruptly. Then the Valentines stuff is out. I really like to enjoy the season and moment I am in. Happy Thanksgiving! :)

I hear ya. I was buying Halloween candy the other day in the grocery store and they were pushing the Halloween stuff out of the way and stocking and entire aisle with Christmas stuff. No Thanksgiving to be found. You may have better luck with finding supplies at a party store or a paper goods store. I have one near me and they have lots of plates, napkins, table decorations for Thanksgiving and every other holiday. I don't think people care so much about Thanksgiving as they used to, especially when so many families are spread out all over the country. I don't think people get together as much as they used to years ago. I know that is the case with my family, as the kids are growing up, college and jobs are sending people everywhere. We don't all have the time or money to get together as much as we would like to. When I was a kid, we had huge family gatherings, but then aunts, uncles and cousins were close by. Not so much now.

I didn't check Bed, Bath and Beyond, but I will. Thanks! Target had nothing. I walked around the entire store and finally asked a clerk if they had any Thanksgiving items. She said she was sure they did, so I followed her on another trip around the store. Nothing. She kept apologizing for Target not having any Thanksgiving stuff. However, she did point out that I shouldn't have any trouble locating Christmas items. :)

Exactly! In fact, I'm burning a spiced pumpkin Yankee Candle tart in my fall designed burner right now. :) Happy Thanksgiving to you, too!

Happy Thanksgiving! I love Thanksgiving as well. Heck, anytime from September 1-January 1 brings a big smile to my face :teeth: . I prefer less traditional Thanksgiving decor, though. A nice tablecloth in beautiful jewel tones or autumn colors works for me. I also love my Yankee candles. I put lots of autumnal flowers around the house to decorate as well as candles of all kinds everywhere.

It seems like more and more Thanksgiving is just the date on which you start shopping for Christmas. Like it no longer has its own meaning. :guilty:

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. You get all the family time, warm fuzzy feelings, food, football, and parades without the stress and expense of gift giving. LOVE IT!! It's a nice time to pause and "be still and know..."

Totally agree with ya! I was in Wal-Mart on Halloween day and they had only one little aisle-stand with Thanksgiving stuff. They had one tiny aisle of Halloween and a few aisles of Christmas stuff already out. Ugh.

Thanksgiving is DH's favorite holiday too... Wal-Mart did have some very cute Placemats and aprons with cute Turkeys on them. Don't know if your Wal-Mart has them, but they were in a little display thingie in the middle of the aisle...

I just heard on TV that Wal-Mart is going to be having some of their Black Friday specials coming out early this year to try and pre-empt everyone else's Christmas sales. I guess next year the displays will start in June, lol!

The gold hallmark stores do carry some thanksgiving stuff. Not placemats, tho.

Forgot to mention Kmart's Martha Stewart line had some green leaf placemats. I bought one as a centerpiece to put a candle on.

I love Thanksgiving, because it's the only holiday (from a business perspective) that you can wish someone a "Happy Thanksgiving" and not tick someone off.

It can be pretty difficult to find Thanksgiving stuff, though. I've had luck with Kohls in the past, too.

Let's face it. It's just not an extremely profitable holiday. That's sad...

Did you try Kohls? They had bath & kitchen Thanksgiving items this morning. :thumbsup2

I did try Kohls, but the one nearby had very little in the way of Thanksgiving things.

I just thought of a place that I didn't look, though. There is a store called, Home Goods, (I think that's the correct name), that's about fifteen miles north of here. Not sure if it's a chain or what, but they usually carry a lot of seasonal and holiday merchandise. Kind of a quirky place, but I think I'll check it out this evening.

Oh there's always some jive turkey who is likely to not like it.....

Yesterday at Kohls I thought I was a week from Christmas! Decorations, the chains up for long lines, head to toe Christmas... it was weird. And the mall had Santa's stand almost ready to go. Now that's just sad!!
