As most of you who participated in last week's debate on rudeness at Disney World know, I was compiling information for a piece I was running at my site (the link to which can be found in my signature).

My humble thanks to everyone who participated, as well as to our webmaster (who graciously gave his permission) and the various moderators who had to step in when things got a tad too heated.

In the end, it turned out I had enough for more than one piece, but part one was posted this evening. I hope that those of you who had qualms about my intentions will see that they were honorable, and will enjoy the playful chiding of those who'd try to bring the outside world's lack of civility to our happy place.

Sincerely,
Richard

I should also send a special thanks to TheTXTaylors5 for giving such a fantastic quote, which gave me a great "outro" for the piece. It was truly appreciated!

nice job compiling it all! :thumbsup2 I'm enjoying browsing some of the other pages on your site, too.

Thanks, guys! I'll tell you, the big challenge was trying to narrow things down! I also wanted to make sure that I wasn't, you know, bashing Disney in any way, shape or form, because it's a place I absolutely love! (I'm going the first week in March... can't wait!)

I could only read a couple of pages of that rude thread and had to stop. It was just too much. But it did spark that nice people thread, which I read in entirety and while many of those things would come second nature to me (giving up seats, helping people who are lugging stuff) there were some fabulous thoughts/ideas to keep in mind to employ in our every day lives, not just at Disney!

Dickens, I agree! I had a tough time reading some of the stuff, especially when people started getting nasty. I really hoped that it wouldn't devolve to that, but I suppose it might have been inevitable. The moderators were a really great help in trying to keep things on track.

I think (hope!) I did a pretty good job in my piece of playfully addressing some of the issues brought up without ever resorting to being mean or nasty. Like I've said, that's completely not the tone that I wanted the piece to have. I'm a big ol' Disney fan and wanted it to be playful and respectful while at the same time pointing out the not-so-great behaviors of some people.

That thread was just a case of forum participants feading off of each other's angst.

Further, I don't understand the point of your site.

Actually, the thread was NOT simply people feeding off each other's angst. Many, many people began their posts with words like "I generally just try not to let this stuff bother me, but here's a great example." Unfortunately, at a certain point, little "scuffles" if you will broke out between two very vocal and distinct factions. And, unfortunately there were certain board members who were deliberately poking sticks at others in an attempt to rile them up. It was sort of ironic, given the topic of the threat! :confused3

As for the purpose of my site, it's two fold, both of which are sort of explained on the "About" page.

1) It's a forum which gives people a way to vent about what we on the site call "crimes against civility" which run rampant in our society today. Sort of a place to take a stand against rudeness. In that way, it's not a whole lot different from the Disboards. here, people are brought together by their love of Disney. On my site, people are united by their frustration at the rudeness which seems so pervasive in every day life.

2) It's a place designed to let people feel that they aren't alone in looking around and saying, "Geez, we're going to heck in a handbasket... and we don't like it." Again, it's sort of a communal feeling.

If you look at the post I wrote about bad behavior at Disney, you'll see it's not mean-spirited in any way, shape or form, but rather an oft-humorous look at some of the often hard to believe things people do in complete disregard for everyone around them.

Not everybody "gets" the site. And of course, that's okay! It was designed, mainly, as my reaction to the increasingly hideous -- and, in some quarters, inexplicably acceptable -- behavior that goes on around us every day.

:thumbsup2 Great article. As much as people want to put a negative spin on the site, you can't argue about what was written. It is all so true. Sad, but true. Most likely, the negative behavior desribed was done by one-time WDW guests. They want to see and do everything at all costs. Those of us that have a deep appreciation of the Disney "magic" try and pass it along. We wouldn't purposely dampen someone's WDW experience or p@# on our "sacred" Disney grounds. When I see people act as described in the article, I shrug it off and continue to enjoy the Disney magic. There's no place like "home". :cloud9:

I'm glad to help with a "positive" comment. Honestly, I was relieved that I didn't have a comment under the "rude section". ;)

Have a magical time at WDW. :wizard:

I do remember reading tidbits of that thread... I personally have not experienced any rudeness (that I know of, and hopefully didn't cause others....) at Disney.

I would like to read some more of the experiences, and being it weas closed down, I would have to go searching for it.

Richard, can you post a link to that thread here...

Please and thanks...

p.s. I totally get your site, it is not mean as a negative, but invokes conversation, and opens peoples eyes to the unfortunate reality of everyday life. Kudo's...

I like your site a lot! It seems like a great place to vent if you can't--- or just won't ----vent to the offender(s). Interesting too to see how the same things can bother many of us...well, except for the drunk chick who blamed the cops for not giving her a copy of the appearance ticket when she got arrested during a domestic and subsequently hauled off...:rotfl2: Cool ideas and well explained on the site IMHO :thumbsup2

Nice job on the article! Couldn't have been easy wading through all those posts (I had to bail halfway in - way too depressing/aggravating)!

I think it's good to have a place for people to know they're not alone in being upset by all this rude behavior, and that there are still some of us out there that would like the world to be a kinder, more considerate place.

Beats the alternative... chucking your hands in the air and saying, "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em!" and tramping 3 toddlers and a grandmother on your way to the front of the line. ;)

It didn't get too aggravating until some folks starting sort of deliberately poking others with sharp sticks. Then, it was tough!

I enjoyed the article. I couldn't help but laugh out loud at some of the examples.

Now, I didn't post on the rude thread... didn't even open it. But, I must say that out of the ten rude behaviors at WDW listed in your article, I have observed seven.

We just got back from a week at WDW yesterday and have to say that we didn't see as much rudeness as before. When we do encounter it we just look at each other and say either "Welcome to the happiest place on earth" or "See? That's why we can't have anything nice!" - depending on the situation. Then we go on our way laughing aloud. :rotfl2:

Proving yet again that laughter is the best medicine. Not only for what ails you, but for what ails the world!
