Thank you card question

Today was the volunteer appreciation breakfast at my kid's school. The teachers make breakfast and anyone who has volunteered in the classrooms throughout the school year is invited to come. Some times the teachers will have a small token gift for the parent helpers (some teachers do this, but not all).

My daughter's teacher gave me a small candle and a card that said thanks for the help this year.

I was mentioning to someone that I was going home to write the thank you card for the gift and the person said I didn't need to. She said the gift was a thank you gift, and you do not need to write them a thank you note for their thank you. She made the point that you don't write a thank you card for someone when they give you a thank you card, and then you don't expect a thank you card back for the thank you card you sent (you see where that would be a never ending thing).

Anyway, I never thought about it that way and was just wondering what proper protocol is in this situation. My son's teacher just gave me a thank you card, but I was still going to send her a thank you card thanking her for the breakfast.

I would send a card thanking him or her for the gift and for a nice time, so on and so forth.
