It amazes me that people who can understand that traditions are different in New Orleans and New York City or in Miami and Anchorage can't seem to grasp that St John's may do things differently than Quebec City or that metro Toronto and rural Saskatchewan may have different social conventions.

Hey, a zombie thread that was resurrected purposefully. Nice. I never knew about Canadian fruit cakes.

I think this is how many see other cultures that they are not exposed to or immersed in. Certainly a lot of people outside the US have a certain image of all Americans as cowboys or some such thing. We tend to simplify a group into the most obvious traits. It seems to be a natural proclivity. I always think about other planets in Sci-Fi movies and how they can only be one thing with one culture. This is a desert planet. It is 100% desert climate on the entire world and the people are vaguely desert type people who all dress and act basically the same. That's pretty much how we see other countries, even if that view is limited.

Fruit cake is sometimes a favour handed out. Like a pp said, it’s wrapped in a paper doily and put under your pillow.

Fruit cake is NOT a flavour for the wedding cake that is cut.

I always agreed with you. It's a tradition dying out but in the 1980s and 90s when I attended many weddings it was a "thing" to give out a wrapped piece of fruit cake at the end of the reception.
It wasn't the dessert. That was something else.
