Thank god for backups

I just had a 750gb seagate usb freeagent go south on me. It wasn't used that much, just to backup pictures. At least I have them on another HD and CDs. Also gives me an excuse to get off my butt and go to DVDs.

Guess I'm in the market for another external HD. Wonder how the solid state ones are.

I've heard good things about the solid state drives. I'm going to be in the market for one soon, with my upcoming trips to California, Hawaii, and Europe.

So glad you had back ups! Good to hear a positive when it could have been bad. I read so many stories of people not backing up to other devices and I practically beg them to burn to DVD but they just never think it will happen to them. I have a good friend who just lost ALL her pictures of BOTH her girls. This after many, many conversations about backing up. Like someone here pointed out, it's not if your EHD will fail, it's when.

The problem with solid state drives is that they're 1) expensive and 2) not very big.

I think they make more sense as your "Windows drive" as they are so fast with random access, much more so than a typical hard drive.

I've been using Mozy to do my backups... though it didn't occur to me that with the somewhat slow (376k) upstream speed of my internet connection, it will take a few months to complete the initial backup of all my RAW files. We're talking a few hundred gig. Fortunately my download speed is fast (10meg) so if have to recover something, that will go much faster!

I've been singing the praises of Mozy to a number of people lately. With their free two gigs of backup, there is no excuse for everyone to not have at least some stuff (local email, documents, and maybe some pics if there's room) backed up.
