TGIF: The College Years

Why can't people like Stephanie come to my school? We get big people (Nancy Pelosi came in November) to come, but not celebrities...

Good Morning Yall!

LOL...that's all I can see her as! Seriously! It's just like Uncle Jesse in other stuff, I can only see him as Uncle Jesse!:confused3

:lmao: Me too! Whenever I turn on ER I'm like, "Wow, Uncle Jesse went back to Med school!" :rotfl:

Good Morning Yall!

Morning! I don't even know if my college has guest speakers... I'm sure they do but I like to get in, go to my classes and get the hell out :lmao: It's different when you go away and are dorming on campus than when you stay home. All my "extracurriculars" are regular, non-school things :confused3 But they film a bunch of movies on my campus! It was ranked the #1 most beautiful campus in the country two years ago by the Princeton Review and we always see random people filming. The latest was Sarah Jessica Parker filming "Spinning Into Butter" last spring (she's SO nice... and tiny!) and they filmed Law and Order SVU on campus this past fall. Meeting Jesse L. Martin was the highlight of my semester since I'm such a huge fan of Rent :lmao:

We don't get many celebrities...
The band Hellogoodbye came for our fall concert, and Jeff Shaara had come for last year's Civil War speaker, but that's about it...

Oh, but we do have some famous alumni! Carson Kressely from Queer Eye graduated from Gettysburg, and Jerry Spinnielli (author of Stargirl and Maniac Magee) did too! :)

yeah, totally crazy. Do you go to Iowa State? I do. I am in the teacher ed program. What's your major?

Yes I do - I'm in the higher ed program (practically live in LAGO)! That's super ironic!

As for campus celebrities - image living in IOWA! We've had EVERY politician on our campus, most have come more than once. One guy even moved his family to Iowa so he could campaign easier here!

Good morning everyone!

I guess we get kind of a lot of celebrities here, which makes sense I guess since we're one of the biggest universities in the country and we're in a fairly big city. Last quarter I saw Dane Cook for free, tomorrow Russell Simmons is going to be here, Will Ferrell's Funny or Die tour is here next week, Thrice and Say Anything are coming next month, and there are probably others coming soon that I don't know about. Some of the other big ones they've had while I've been here are Bill Nye the Science Guy, Demetri Martin, Carlos Mencia, Anthony Rapp, Taking Back Sunday, and Kurt Vonnegut. Plus every year there's a Welcome Week concert in the fall and the Big Free Concert in the spring... the last few have been T-Pain, Ludacris, and some other rapper I forget... I don't really like rap, so I'm hoping for a band I actually like this spring!

We have one famous celebrity in my town that would come to campus and that's Rodney Atkins.

Rascal Flatts are such sweethearts and their live show is freakin amazing.

Yeah it is. I have classes in Lago all the time too, I have one there today actually.

I would have loved to have seen Anthony Rapp ( I love Rent) or Demetri Martin ( He is so funny).
That's awesome that all those people came to your school.

Alright, time to catch up! Classes started this week for me, so I'm a little behind on my DISing! ;)

Children's Lit classes are the best! All my friends are reading The Communist Manifesto and ancient Greek philosophy and I'm like "Yea, I'm reading Curious George." :lmao: It's awesome! It's more of a performance class than anything, though. We were given passages from classic nursery rhymes and then had to pick a card and each card had an adjective on it. We then had to take turns reading a nursery rhyme in the mood we picked on the card, so it was fun! As long as your not shy it's a really fun class, if any of you have a chance to take something like it.

Your children's lit class sounds like a lot of fun, I'm glad you're enjoying it! :thumbsup2

I just thought I'd let everyone know something that I'm extremely excited about: Jodi Sweetin (Stephanie from Full House) is coming here next week! I love that show!:goodvibes

Aw that is exciting, let us know how it goes! :)

Tinkgurl---that's pretty awesome!!! full house is the best!!

ARRRGH!!! I went to the gym on campus this morning (which is absoltuely amazing and gorgeous and huge and i love it) but i lost my flippin student card there!!!
I had it on a lanyard in one of those little card protector thingys and somehow it must've fallen out while I was jogging!!!!!:confused3
I walked around the track a couple of times to look for it, and i went to all the machines i was at and every place i was in the gym and NOTHING.
I have NO idea where it it!!!:headache:
And I need that card for access to the gym!!!!
So now I have to hope some kind soul turns it in within the next couple days or pay 100$$ to get a replacement!!!!:headache: grrr.

Happy Tuesday!!
Hopefully my day doesn't go even more downhill

:scared1: I hope you find it! I can't believe it's $100 to replace, ours is only $20 or $30 I think...again, I really hope someone turns it in for you!

babieemelly, that class sounds so fun! Is it as easy as it sounds?

I had my first academic misadventure of the quarter yesterday... of course I procrastinated and didn't finish my history prospectus until about an hour before it was due. We had to turn it in at the professor's office by 4, and I was printing it at about 3:15. My printer has been out of black ink for awhile, but it's a photo printer and I had a photo cartridge that you can use instead of black ink, which I used to print something a few weeks ago and it worked fine. But of course yesterday, it didn't work at all... my printer was taking several minutes to print each page, but the pages all came out completely blank.:headache: So I was trying to fix it for like half an hour, and I finally gave up and tried to use my roommate's printer... and her computer froze as it was opening the file.:headache::headache:

By that time it was almost 4, and it takes me 20 minutes to walk to my professor's office anway, so I frantically emailed him the prospectus and explained what happened, then went to one of the computer labs on campus to print it out and take it to his office... and it turned out he wasn't even there, and everyone had put their papers under the door. So now my email just unnecessarily pointed out that mine was late, since he wouldn't have even known otherwise. I'm sure it will turn out fine, but I was really wondering what I had done to make everything work against me yesterday!:rotfl:

:lmao: That's totally something I would do too. I'm sure everything will work out fine, at least yours wasn't later than anyone else's! :goodvibes

So, we had 80's night the other day at work! ;)

Nice!

Side note-- Does anyone else's college offer a course on Disney? I'm taking a History course this semester called "Walt Disney and American Culture". It's awesome! Def getting me even more excited for the CP!

Wow! That class sounds awesome. I definately don't think my school offers anything like that!

LUCKY. That class sounds awesome! I wish my history department offered that, that would be an amazing class, AND it would count toward my major.

Oh, is anyone planning to study abroad? I'm in the process of filling out my application to go to Florence, Italy in the fall, and I am so excited!

((and YAY for my first cancelled class of the semester. hehe.))

I just wanted to post on here how much I hate winter in Iowa. I grew up in California until I was 16 so I am so not used to this freezing weather. :cold:

Oh, and ashley, that history class sounds awesome I wish they had it at my school.

That sounds so awesome! I don't think our history department has anything like that, or I'd be all over it. The English department does have some cool classes though about movies and tv shows... there was one last year about The Sopranos and there's one next quarter about teen comedies. I might try to take one next year, because I only have a few classes left for my majors.

I did a 5 week study abroad program at Oxford this past summer, and it was the most amazing experience of my life. I'm dying to go back or do another program, but I can't afford it.:sad1: What kind of program is the one you're applying for?

Nice!

My friend just got back from studying abroad in Italy for 3 weeks and she LOVED it. I'm not studying abroad, exactly, but I am going on a 10 day tour to Scotland and London with my choir next January! I just turned in my application and down payment today, I'm super excited! :woohoo:

Ooh tough move, California to Iowa! I've lived in MD my whole life, and I'm STILL not used to winter. :rotfl: I'd love to have warm weather like in FL instead! :cloud9:

Hi I'm new to the thread! My name is Mandie and I go to an art school in Los Angeles for video game design. I'm a current junior and 21 years old, 22 on Sunday. I'm so glad this thread was started, I'd love to talk with more Disney fans my age. :thumbsup2

I've wanted to get involved with the college program ever since I heard about it but unfortunately because my school runs year round and is on the quarter system there hasn't been a time for to do it. I would need to take off a quarter or two and that's an unlikely option. Oh well.

I just had an interview at DisneyLAND today though and I have a second interview a week from today so hopefully I'll still get to experience working for the mouse. :)

My ultimate goal is become a face character, I've gone to eight auditions so far, yes eight, but I'm still trying! The competition for face character roles out here is fierce, there's a lot of actors and performers out here looking to break into showbiz with a role at Disney.

Hope to talk with you all soon!
