I just discovered this is a possiblity. While I knew about face time, which I still need to set up, I had no idea texting was possible.

Has anyone successfully downloaded & used an app to text from their iPod Touch? Or are the applications only useable for Americans? From what I'm reading, it seems the apps assign a phone number that works through cell phone companies in order to text? Will these apps work through CAnadian cell phone companies?

Any help would be very much appreciated! I would love to get this set up for my daughter.

Are you thinking about imessanger? It's not really a true text, but more like a chat, with users emails not phone numbers. Also you'd have to be in a wifi area for it to work. Not sure if this is what you're thinking of though?

My son uses the app text+. It works with other users that have text+ as well as regular phone numbers, he uses it to text my DH on his blackberry, and also his girlfriend and other friends who have cell phones, and his friends who have ipods too. I'm not aware of it assigning him a phone number or anything like that, I'll have to ask DH what shows up when he texts DS back. You do have to have wi-fi to use it. He loves it,my only complaint is that it does lag sometimes (DH doesn't receive DS's texts as quickly from the iPod as from cell phones).

My 10 year old DD has text+ on her iPod. When we loaded the app she got to pick a number from a limited selection. She can only text from home or places with free wifi. Its a cute way for her to communicate with her little friends and I'm sure the texting helps with her spelling. I text her from my iPhone and she also has gotten a couple texts from my friend who has an old school cell. Free texting - yee-ha.

You don't have to be in a wifi area...it's data maessaging and uses 3G network.

Thanks for the information. I'll look up Text+ and iMessage today and see how these work. It will be great if I can get this working on her iPod. :thumbsup2

iPod touch has no cellular capability. It uses iMessage on wifi to send texts to email addresses.

OHHHHHHHH I have to start reading properly!!!!!!! I meant on an iPhone...soooo sorry. Didn't realize you were talking iPod. Okay-back to minding my biz:rolleyes1

I never did get as far as texting today, but I did manage to find Skype for iPod. Got that installed and working. Installed "find my iphone", set-up restrictions, etc. etc.

Of course that was after I figured out how to reset & redo our wireless networking as I could not remember the password for the life of me. :rotfl2:

Tomorrow... I'll take a crack at texting tomorrow. Or maybe next week.

I second text +. Used it on my ipod to text my son in Canada when we were in Europe. As previously mentioned you need wifi for it to work.
