Sorry about your medical issues while on vacation - were you in port when you made your calls or out to sea? I’d be interested in what you were charged BUT it was probably worth it.
I found occasionally going into iPhone settings and selecting "Forget this network" to dump DCL guest when close to shore allows the phone to pick up shore towers when close to shore. Then return to settings and select DCL guest when not using shore towers. DCL WiFi is expensive and usually doesn't work. DCL Guest allows on board ships announcements and reminders to work.
Thanks for all the feedback. The iphone worked great with the "free wifi" available with the DCL-GUEST account. I also did the $10/day Verizon plan i was able to send SMS messages but not much else but was worth it in case i needed to make a call.
You were able to send SMS as the ship was at sea with the $10 plan? Or in/near land. When I was in foreign ports I was able to search the web and make normal phone calls. To the IS or to a local. Umber in the country I was in. Worked great.

I was able to use text messaging app while on the ship as long as I was connected to the ship’s Wi-Fi and had the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app open. I didn’t need a paid internet package for it, just the free Wi-Fi that lets the app work. It worked well for messaging people both on the ship and back home, but only through the app, not regular texting.
