In our district, no sports/band/etc if you're not in person in class. We had our first games this week too. Home side was distanced. Visitor side was packed. Apparently they have a kid who's nationally ranked and already committed to a big name school. (We lost badly.)

Does that mean he gets to sue if he gets covid and ends up being one with the long term lung issues after? Ugh, I'm just frustrated that so many schools are open (many with no rules regarding covid, or rules sorely lacking), sports are starting, and many of them shut down again because kids get sick. I know that kid playing football is just as likely to get it from football as he is in his required classroom. Just argh!

Most of the districts in our area decided on postponing fall sports till the spring. So each school sports season will have an abbreviated schedule this year and conference games only - winter sports will start in Jan (instead of November) and go for 6 weeks, there will be a week off and then FALL sports will have a 6 week season, then another week off and Spring sports will start and go to the end of June (usually done by mid-June.) So no Friday night lights for us this fall!

My DD has just finished her second week of teaching kindergarten. The kids wear masks into the school and when ever they are not in the classroom. They wear shields in class. They eat breakfast and lunch in class. They also do not mix or mingle with other kids during school. So far, one child has had a parent with Covid. The child is not allowed back in school until after Labor Day weekend. No word yet if the child has it. Word is that grandma came to visit from Chicago and when she got back, tested positive for Covid. Then her son (the dad) tested positive that Friday after her. Don't know who gave it to whom. My grandkids have been in daycare for two weeks also. No masks are worn by kids or staff. Even parents dropping them off don't wear them. I do though.

A friend of mine has all her kids doing online learning from home, but one of them plays football. Makes no sense to me. Either you're all in or you're not.

The whole thing makes no sense to me either. I'm really interested in how they'll do things down here in the Valley, where were such a hot spot for Covid-19. Yet, football is the chief religion and band (being a support to football) is very close behind. I know that where my granddaughters live, near Denton/Fort Worth, it seems all sports are up and running. Both girls are doing soccer, softball, and I just saw that the High School is having football. How do you socially distance when playing football? And can you wear a mask and play the trumpet? I don't think so!

Band is back in session in the Dallas area. I have a family member who is a band director. How on earth will they stay safe by blowing saliva and hot air all over each other? So dumb.

I think that they figure the band members will be okay with outdoor practice. A friend of mine is a band director and they have the chairs 6' apart in the band hall.

Outdoor will be fine. Indoor, I don't know. Wind instruments take a lot of wind to produce a beautiful sound. Seems like it's going to be dangerous.

As a band director in far, far west Texas, I can tell you that most of us are trying to follow the protocols established by the NFHS aerosol study. Brass instruments should have a cover on the bell. Woodwinds should be covered. Distance should be 6 feet when not playing, 10 feet when playing. Of course, masks when not playing. Most bands are not doing a traditional halftime show. Many of us are doing the best we can with what info we've been given.

😱 Our daycare has been open since July 6. Mandatory mask all day for staff. No mask for kids.Mandatory mask for parents dropping off but they are not allowed to pass the entrance. Our city has mandated each daycare has a runner who wears mask, face shield and gown to take the child to and from their room.
Starting Sept 1, it will be mandatory mask AND face shield for staff all day. Even the catering company cannot come into the building anymore and is met outside in the parking lot to receive meals/snacks for the day.
I’m very surprised staff aren’t wearing masks. We also have reduced hours for disinfecting.

I'm surprised too. We've had two daycares report Covid, one of them shut down for two weeks. I don't know what the other one did.

Our district doesn’t start for 2 1/2 weeks. But, parents were given the option of a hybrid or remote model. The majority (roughly 75-80%) chose hybrid. Out of those who chose remote, it seems to be for a myriad of reasons. Some are anxious about the virus as you would expect. But others are choosing remote because they have an interest in homeschooling but aren’t ready to completely homeschool and still want support and guidance from the school, others because their child struggled emotionally or behaviorally in school and they are hoping remote will help with that (this seems to be especially true at the high school level), along with a bunch of other reasons. Not saying that any of these reasons pertains to your friend.

Interesting to hear from a band director. Thanks for what you do. In reality, if school is happening in person, there aren't a lot of choices. Regular full-steam-ahead band like pre-Covid (not an option), no band at all (not an option if school is still going on), or whatever you can make work in your district with the facilities you have. It can't be easy.

Yes, I found the information interesting also. DS was a self-described "band geek" in HS and is currently a professional musician in NYC (well, not now-now he's collecting unemployment). I'll have to ask him about the cover on the bell (he plays trumpet).
And bless you for what you do-I always said that band directors have a 24 hr job during football season.
