Texas

Aren't most of the major cities in Texas mandating masks now?

My daughter moved to Houston, late last year. We are supposed to visit her in about three weeks. Right now, our trip is still on. But I'm still worried. We'll follow all state laws and mask up.

Should I be concerned?

You'll believe a politician telling you there's no need to wear a mask? Oh dear.
I guess this is meant as an insult? Sorry to disappoint but I never said that.
I know some take it to the extreme but precautions haven't changed much...

*Wash your hands

*Don't touch your eyes, nose or face

*Don't cough on others

*Stay home if you are unwell and away from sick people

*Distance...six feet away from those outside your household

*Wear a mask if required or unable to distance

*High risk and elderly should take extra precautions

Texan here. Science has definitely left the building in Texas. I feel like I’m back in school and part of a huge group project - I’m doing my part, but no one else is so we are all going to fail. It’s maddening - it even angers some people to see you wearing a mask. It’s a very scary predicament.

Another Texan and I completely agree. Let's not forget that we have the lieutenant governor who declared that the elderly would willingly sacrifice their lives for the economy.

I would not be visiting Houston at all right now, and I can't imagine how things could be anything but worse in three weeks. The numbers coming out of the Houston area are quite alarming. This is certainly not something you want to expose yourself to, nor potentially bring back to your own community.

I posted on a different thread three weeks ago about how my parents, who currently live in Dallas, busted out of their continuing care facility (they are in the fully independent side) and went to stay at my brother’s house for a few weeks just for a change in scenery. They went out knowing that upon return they would have to stay in their apartment for seven days. After that they are restricted to staying on campus. They kind of hopefully thought that when they came back the restrictions would have been lifted. They went back home yesterday and of course now everything is looking so much worse for Texas than when they left on June 3. We are all amazed that their facility of 600 has had no reported cases and we’ll hope for that to continue.

I'm concerned about my family in Houston. My in-laws and my siblings are all older and/or high risk for Covid. If you are not in either one of those categories, you should be fine with precautions.

I think a good majority of them are. I've been listening to the radio and heard a number of them have started to. My daughter is headed to El Paso today for her visitation weekend with her son, her ex has him for summer visitation and she gets two weekends while he has him. Currently she hasn't heard of any restrictions but that could change by the time she gets there. Her next visit though is in Seattle next month. The hotel there is requiring masks to be worn by all guests at all times in public already. I will be so glad when our grandson is back home.

I would play it by ear, plan on coming but if it gets out of hand, you might have to postpone your trip.

Unless it's changed, our Governor also made it impossible to penalize anyone NOT wearing a mask a week or 2 ago. So mandating them but being unable to enforce it does little good in this environment. Getting mixed messages from the federal government doesn't help. People equating their mask beliefs with their political affiliations doesn't help.

I'm a physician half way between Austin and Houston. I'm watching the numbers rise with resignation. It will only get worse before it gets better.

My FIL is a doctor in Houston, SIL is a surgeon in Austin. We talked 2 days ago. They are very concerned about Austin and Houston and although there’s no reason to panic, there’s also no reason to travel into the hotspot- especially if old enough to have adult children. Just as I would not have gone into NYC in April, I would not go into Houston right now. Extraordinary measures are going to be needed to get Texas under control after they’ve hit these levels of spread and growth rates.

We're in the eye of the storm. Cases are rising steadily and everyone I know is acting like nothing is wrong. My FB feed is full of friends and family going to the mall, out to eat, tubing the river in packs, backyard parties, bars, sports practice, you name it. No one has been wearing masks up until this week when Austin's mayor mandated them for businesses.

Our good friend is an ER doc and says his hospital is at it's limit as of today. Things are going to get a whole lot worse for our state.

There is nothing anyone could say to explain that situation to me. But from afar it seems like people simply DO NOT CARE. The Pandemic is no where near over, not even close. Ignore that fact or walk blindly off a cliff.

This was bound to happen in Texas. Covid is here to stay, plenty of asymptomatic carriers, but it’s not a death sentence for everyone. We just have to be smart and handle things going forward with care.

Are you in College Station? One of my son's friends at A&M has the virus now. About a quarter that kid's fraternity has come down with it.

I live in a town that straddles two counties. One is Dallas county. Normally, the town votes to do for the entire town what it has to do for Dallas county. Months ago, the entire town had to follow Dallas county rules for masks, shutdowns, etc. Now, with the newest (wear masks in all businesses), they voted to keep the town split in half. Disappointing. The pure vitriol in the Facebook post about even being told to wear them in the Dallas county half is disgusting. Now, elective surgeries are banned again per the governor. Wonder how much more we'll have to backtrack because of these attitudes.

I live here, in Texas (a town adjacent to Houston actually). I'm originally from PA, but have lived here for some time.

I office in the Galleria area of Houston and am quite familiar with it. I haven't actually worked from my office since the second week of March, but have been able to work from home because my company is amazing like that.

Yes, our numbers are increasing minute by minute and yes we are all supposed to be wearing masks. Some people wear them, but people simply don't (or won't). A lot of people will not social distance. A lot of people here still are carrying on as if there wasn't a pandemic.

If I were a visitor, I would not be visiting Houston anytime soon. But that is just me and that's my opinion based on observing my surroundings.

I'm happy to try to answer any Houston related questions if anyone has any specific questions.

Ack, no, but I have 3 dd's up at A&M this fall. With the way our curve has been accelerating, I'm not at all confident in-person classes are going to be feasible.

What makes me equally crazy is the straight assumption that if you're young it will be a mild or asymptomatic case. Probably and will be are completely different. And some studies are showing that completely asymptomatic patients still have findings on chest CT's. We have no idea what sort of long term complications this disease has. An entire generation of young people with potential lung damage is not "no big deal."

Yep, I just read about a 27-year old marathon runner with no pre-existing conditions that now has significant lung scarring and still has shortness of breath, fatigue and elevated heart rate 60 days after "recovering" from Covid. Her story was chilling.

My son had a "mystery viral infection" that began in late December and resulted in 4 hospitalizations between December and February. He's still not 100% yet and may never truly be according to his infectious disease doctor. He says post viral syndrome can hit young, healthy people really hard.
