Texas to open 100%

Well, there’s all the children who should be in school but aren’t. There’s all the “nonessential businesses” that still have restricted hours or aren’t permitted to be open (like my personal trainer’s gym). There’s the essential services that aren’t available such as someone who is entitled to a trial by a jury of their peers but all the courts are closed. How about that elective medical procedure? Not available in some states right now.

the list goes on. It’s not about restaurants.
Yeah, all those things are open and available where I am.

It did actually. See my earlier post regarding Michigan’s restrictions on residential gatherings.
A recommendation or guideline is not telling someone who can be in their house. You could have had 10,000 people over and nothing would have happened to you.

I think this highlights just how "where you are" affects your views on this. In CA, we can't sit in a restaurant AT ALL, kids are not in school AT ALL, kids are not allowed to play sports AT ALL, heck, for a couple of months you couldn't even eat OUTSIDE at a restaurant AT ALL - period, take-out only. Beaches were closed back in July, parks were closed, skate parks were filled with sand, basketball hoops were removed from backboards, it's been very, very dystopian here. We have had to fight every step of the way to get any of these restrictions lifted. All of this while we had among the worst spikes of any state, and no, I don't think it could have gotten any worse if the restrictions had not been in place. You want to debate masks? That is the least of the restrictions we have endured.
Exactly. Same here.... we still have businesses that aren’t allowed to reopen. My parents can’t watch their grandkids play sports. Every time there is a positive case at my kids school, they put a bunch of healthy kids into quarantine. And the list goes on... so yes, masks are really the least of my worries at this point.

Ah ok, can you send me the articles with all the people that got arrested for having people in their house?
I think you need to reread my posts. You continue to claim that they don’t have legal authority to limit household gatherings, when in fact they do. Whether or not they actually enforce those restrictions is irrelevant. The fact is, there are many people won’t do something just because it’s a rule, not because they think they’ll get caught.

You post that after what, 3 other people posted that yes this did happen?
Unfortunately, people can be misleading on the internet sometimes. Some people love to feel aggrieved or persecuted and will take a suggestion as an attack on their freedoms.

I never claimed they didn't have the legal authority. I'm saying it was never really 'real'. No one was ever going to be thrown in jail for having people at their house, it just has a better effect to pretend it's more than a suggestion. Now people can act tough and say 'aint no one gonna tell me who I can have in MY house!'

They didn't even arrest DUI suspects at the beginning of the pandemic, let alone party goers.

However, there is more to punishing a person than throwing them in jail. Several people have been fined for violating the orders. Some thought they were above the law and refused to pay the fines, and just ignored them. Now those people will have a bigger consequence.

OMG - how could I forget about the courts? I sued my neighbor because he messed up my driveway - my court date is currently 2 YEARS since he did it AND, we fully expect it will get pushed back again. Oh, but at least you won't be called for jury duty. Actually, yes I did. Not sure how that works, but I have jury duty in a couple of weeks.

And haircuts - forgot about that. I have twice now gone 4 months without a haircut.

How can the State governors tell you who you can and can't have in your home for Thanksgiving and Christmas? They can't, but they did in quite a few of our States. And most of you here were all for it (because I am seeing a lot of new folk whom hasn't been involved in previous threads about masks.)
I wasn't for it at all. But we were having our own adult kids in from out of town, along with whatever risk they brought with them. No way was I going to expose my 80 and 87 year old parents to even that risk.

I really feel like matters like this need to be up to families to decide. But just because you choose to remain separate doesn't mean you don't like your family.

The guy who killed my DH’s cousin in a DUI crash will have sat awaiting trial for 2 years now. It just got pushed back again until May. I did just read that my county is starting jury trials again, so hopefully it doesn’t get pushed back again. At least he’s been remanded without bail during these 2 years.

Virtual jury duty perhaps. That's at least what some places are doing.

I'm pretty sure the 'weeks to flatten the curve' was about the more extreme restrictions like literally everything closed, everyone stay inside, etc. I don't recall any leader saying 'let's flatten the curve and then it's a free for all!' What civil liberties are you missing out on right now? Sitting in a more crowded restaurant? Not wearing a mask in a private business? At least where I am, everything is open, no one is being told to stay inside, you can travel anywhere you want...you are just asked to wear a mask indoors. What am I missing that is being taken away?

Obviously comparing this to smoking is laughable, almost as silly as the 'people die in car crashes too' argument.
For the most part, most of America has been co operative in the requested COVID restrictions. But just to remind you, the Bill of Rights guarantees free association. As part of this, for many states to say gathering to go to religious services as being prohibited which violates freedom of religion. Also, let us get one thing straight. Not one state has actually passed legislation that was signed into law that mandates the wearing of masks--this is not an accident since all legislatures know that if this was attempted and went to the supreme court the law would Not be upheld. We are not a third world country ruled by dictators, but a land where the rule of law stands. I really hate giving a basic civics lesson, but it seems many need to be reminded.

I get my 2nd shot Friday. I'll keep wearing the mask as I've enjoyed not having assorted crud, and fewer allergy issues. To the poster who asked who can get the shot her, all first responders, medical workers, anyone 65+, anyone 16+ with a secondary condition. Asthma, other pulmonary, cardiac conditions, obese, chronic health concerns. You have to affirm you have one but we did not have to provide medical diagnosis.

As of Wednesday, add teachers, child care workers, and all school employees. My city has done a great job. It was announced and started immediately. DH is a Community college admin. He sent the email to employees at 9 yesterday and they were leaving and getting jabs by 11.

Meanwhile people over 65 are still trying to find appointments in large cities like San Antonio.

As far as my great state of Texas, this great decision (100% open and no masks) was brought to you by the same decision makers who couldn’t provide water or electricity two weeks ago.
