TEMPORARY Refrigerator Removal from WDW Resorts

I know they have the small medical fridges but I also know people who have said at check in the CM at that point puts in a call to housekeeping. Pity the guest who has not requested one or is arriving late and being first come first served and is left without

As far as a Milk or soda/ water fill one of the sinks with ice, should anyone have to do this no but it is a solution. Just a thought

This is exactly why I called the resort today. With our vacation so close, I am thankful that I read about this today on the Dis., rather than be blindsided when we arrived at the resort. This whole refrigerator debacle made me think about my grandmother who was a diabetic. Years ago before hotels had in room refrigerators, she would always have her insulin stored in the hotel fridge. What with today's health codes, I doubt that Disney could even do this for anyone. Believe me, if we did not need a fridge for medical reasons on this trip, I would not have even bothered to call CSR. Anyway, I just wanted to thank the OP for calling our attention to this matter; hopefully everyone will still have happy, and magical vacations with, or without a refrigerator . Okay Disney, time to crank up those ice machines.:)

I wonder if the designer if the fridge/cabinet combo is still employed

Disney notified guests who will be staying at Sports about the food court closing in August so they should start with an e-mail to all their guests informing them about the fridge situation. At check-in they should offer guests $10 per night per room gift card. That at least buys people some milk, juice, yogurt etc. in the morning as most people use the fridge for things like this. These things do not cost Disney much at all as their mark-up price is very high and shows goodwill towards their guests.
I'm very curious to see how they will handle this as it is still very new.

I am staying at Sports one night In Aug (arrival date). We have not been notified of the rehab, but I read about it here 1-2 months ago... I am thinking we were not notified since it is before the start of the rehab (8/3 vs 8/5)

I called the Disney folks today about this. If I want to change my reservations I will have to pay more as I am in my 45 day window. They had me call the Reservation Center as I am diabetic.

I got through with no wait at all. The CM had heard about the issue but I was her first call. As I have a medical need they will put me on the list but THERE IS NOT GUARANTEE that I will get one. I stress that because they said it will all depend on how many non-recalled fridges they have. If there is no fridge then i can store my medicine in the fridge that they use for grocery deliveries. Not overly convenient as she said, but it should work. Plus I can store my insulin at the med center in any of the theme parks while I am there.

I am just posting this because some posters are saying that if you have a medical issue you will get a fridge. I'm just saying that my CM was clear that that is NOT guaranteed, but they will do their best to work with you.

Each person has different needs and that will determine what is good enough. I really wish people wouldn't post these sweeping generalizations for everyone.

As I understand it, if one is not available at your resort, they will go get you one from another resort. I would not worry about it. They will accommodate you if you have that need.

We were at por last july and could not get our fridge to chill stuff. Staff replaced it, sounds like it took a full year to figure out the mini's will not function unless they have space behind them for their fan.

Now i guess itll take another year to fix the issue. We are using our dvc points for aug and oct trips, so no problem here but tough to imagine not having one.

They are hoping to have the work completed in within 4 months. I have read in multiple places that POR should be done by July 31, so hopefully things will move quickly.

Just a note to add about something I haven't seen listed yet...

I was just at WDW in both a SSR studio and a regular POR room. They both had the exact same "fridge." (I use the term "fridge' lightly, as they were really electric coolers, not true mini-fridges. No freezer section, no temp control. As a DVC member, I was not happy about this, as we usually buy a few frozen items for our villa.)

My point is - why are DVC rooms exempt from this recall if the studios have the same "fridges" as the rest of the resorts in question?! Makes no sense.

I imagine it's due to the fact that the SSR fridges aren't in an enclosed cabinet. Or are they?

Well this is interesting; you were told that the fridge was not guaranteed, and I was told just the opposite. The CM who I spoke with specifically said they would 'guarantee' the refrigerator since it was a medical priority, and there was no mention of storing the meds anywhere else. Apparently the CM's are not on the same page.

I agree about the CMs. The impression I got was that they would try to move heaven and earth to get a fridge to the medically dependent people - they just can't guarantee one in the room. She assured me that I would have a place at the resort to store the meds, most likely in my room. I know when I was in customer service we never promised anything we couldn't hand deliver ourselves.

To paraphrase my post above, I think they will do all that they can to get me one and I will probably have one. They did say that it could easily come from a different resort.

Who did y'all call? The resort or a main reservation number?

Ugh, not good! :scared: I guess we could put ice in one of the bathroom sinks and put our water bottles in there. :scratchin If we were driving I would just bring a cooler, but I would hate to have to lug one on the plane. Cold water is a serious need for us, especially at night. Hmmmmmm......

We actually bought a hard sided cooler for about $20-$25 at the Orlando Target to use and considered it a vacation expense. It was a rolling cooler of decent size we gave it to some people we met that were driving home vs flying like us.

everyone needs to just chill, my daughter is currently working as a CP in housekeeping at sports, and she just told me they haven't even been told yet. And it will or should not affect every refrigerator, she said there are about 5 different models in sports alone, so I think this is being blown out of proportion before Disney even has a handle on it.

Just called the AKL and said I had read something online about refrigerators being removed from the rooms, and she said yes that's true and it took place immediately, so checking in this Saturday there would not be one and I could request one at the front desk, but as always not guaranteed, i also asked about medications and needs for infants (expressed BM), still said not guaranteed-- I then asked if there was any compensation being given at this point for inconvenience or possible other expenses incurred and she said not that she knows of at this point. So take that for what it's worth, but I sure hope the local targets and walmarts have their coolers stocked up!

Imagine a bunch of high planning, type A personality Disers blowing things out of proportion! :rotfl2::rotfl2:
