Tell the Guards to Open Up the Gates.....We're Going to Norway! Updated 7/17

If you want to see guards changing, it's very easy to see the Changing of the Queen's Life Guard at the Horse Guards Parade. This is in Whitehall behind the Household Cavalry Museum, which is right next to # 10 Downing St (and just up the road from Westminster and Big Ben). They do the ceremony on horseback, and there are also guards posted on horseback at the front of the building all the time. (We have a pretty funny photo of one of them trying to have a nibble of my daughter's jacket). They actually do a ceremony in the morning and then an "inspection" later in the afternoon.

Our kids loved the V&A, right near Harrods -- they have these activity backpacks with iPods that you can check out.

The Tower of London is awesome - try and get a yeoman warder tour (they are free). They take you into places that you can't go without a tour.

We'll be on the Baltic cruise right before your cruise :)

Thank you SO much for your London tips! I had heard about the Horse Guards option, and I do hope to get there as well. I know it's centrally located, so we should be able to get there and check it out, if for nothing else than to see the guards on horseback.

As far as museums go, I didn't add any in because of our little beast. He is SO loud that I wouldn't want to disturb people. But....if he is sleeping.....then we can get in to check it out. Avery would enjoy it a lot, I know. Grumpy.....well, maybe he can wait outside with Beau!

We do plan on going on a yeoman warder tour - thanks! Glad to hear it is worth seeing/doing!

Originally, I told Grumpy that I would love to do a B2B with your Baltic and our Norway cruise....but it was not to be. I can't wait to do that cruise in the near future, and I hope you have a great time!

Yes, and Horse Guards backs right up on St. James Park, so you could let your little guy run around there. I do remember those days when museums were pretty much out of the question! Even now my kids have the attention span of a flea. That's why we love cruising DCL in Europe -- it's the perfect balance of their idea of fun (Disney! swimming! soft serve ice cream!) and MY idea of fun (culture, history, museums). They are begging me to leave them on the boat in at least one of the ports.

Lol....we were booked on a B2B with the Norway cruise *before* ours. But then I kind of panicked at the giant dollar signs involved, and cancelled the Norway part because the Baltics were on my husband's bucket list. Then they announced the 2016 cruises and I saw Norway AND Scotland AND Iceland -- I HAD to book it! So I'm reading your TR to get ideas for next year!

Hum along with me.......All our bags are packed.....we're ready to go... I'm standing here outside my door......I hate to say lock the door and say goodbye.....

Who am I kidding? I am SO excited to lock that door and say goodbye!! It's finally THE day we get to fly away! 15 months in the planning has come down to today. All I can say is thank goodness that my daughter was out of school last week so she could help me (and earn some extra spending cash) get ready to leave. Laundry, laundry, laundry, clean, clean, clean, pack, pack, pack!! We fly out of Monterey later today, then connect in LAX to LHR. We are really hoping for a great flight with a sleeping baby! I will post along the way with the good, bad and the hopefully-not-so-ugly.

We're off to Neverland!

I'm interested in hearing about your hike to Pulpit Rock, as this is something I'm interested in for our 2016 Norway cruise. Are you pre-booking the ferry and bus and if so, with who? I'm trying to find the time tables for the return trip and they don't seem to return to port with too much wiggle room. I don't know if that should make me nervous.

Bergen – our last day in Norway:sad: As this is our last stop in Norway, I imagine we’ll be making a mad dash for any souvenirs that we’ve missed along the way.

Just one thing - there weren't any souvenir shops that I could find anywhere near where we docked in Bergen. All the other ports had nearby shops, just not Bergen. If you jump on the bus I believe there are some good shops a bit further round, but allow yourself some time.

Well, we're back! 16 days away from home seemed so long and not enough - all at the same time. Our son woke at 3 am thinking he was still on London time, so we are all dragging a bit this morning. I will be gathering my photos and my thoughts in the next few days so I can share them here with all of you! For those of you considering this cruise (or similar) for next year - do it! You will not regret it - not one bit!

We did do Pulpit Rock and I will post a detailed entry for that day - but I wanted to answer you directly as well since this caused us a bit of anxiety as well. We did pre-book the ferry/bus combo with Tide Reiser. They have a website where you can book your tickets. However, I don't think that it was necessary. Once we arrived at the ferry terminal, there were 2 people set up with tables who were selling tickets and had timetables as well. There were a couple of people in our small group who didn't have tickets who were able to buy them right there. If you want to get them in advance, we used this website:

http://www.tidereiser.com/hikingtour-pulpitrock

As far as not having too much wiggle room - you are correct! We met with our small group in the Promenade Lounge at 7:45am and were off the ship by 8am. We walked through town and found the ferry pretty easily. I used Google Maps to make sure we were going the right way, as there simply was no time for us to miss the first ferry. No worries, though, it was easy to find. It took a 15 minute walk and we were there about 8:15am. We waited for the 8:40 ferry, which was right on time. We boarded the ferry for a gorgeous ride to Tau. Once we arrived in Tau, we made sure to get to the front of the ferry to make sure we caught the first bus. The bus was waiting right outside the ferry and we boarded (it was very full!). We drove about 15 minutes to the trailhead - we all used the restroom and then - we were off! I'll detail the rest later, but needless to say, if you don't make the 1st ferry, move at a rapid pace and make the 2:30 bus - you will not make it back to the Magic in time. Our family's biggest complaint was that we simply didn't have enough time to enjoy the view once we got up there. Plus, every time I stopped to catch my breath, enjoy the view, etc....I felt like the white rabbit was tsk tsking me with being late for a very important date!

I'll be happy to answer any other questions you may have........

Welcome back!!! Can't wait to hear about your trip and see pictures. How did the baby do on the plane?

Welcome back!!! Can't wait to hear about your trip and see pictures. How did the baby do on the plane?

Hmmmm.....there is no easy answer for this, as we took 6 flights over the course of the trip. I will break it down for each leg, since most of them were different times of day, length of flight, etc...

MRY-LAX - We had a great experience as it was a short 45 minute flight. Beau was excited about the plane and he was an angel for those 45 minutes. No complaints.

LAX-LHR - By the time we boarded (9:00pm) Beau was pretty tired. He was in pajamas and was eager to explore the A380. He especially loved the remote handset and kept pulling it out of the armrest. I nursed him during takeoff and he was asleep soon after. The flight attendant set up the bassinet as soon as we reached 10,000 feet and we placed Beau in it for the night. I kept praying that we would have a smooth flight so we wouldn't have to take him out of it - and we did! He slept about 7 hours total - which was great. It gave us time to eat and sleep before we arrived in London. No complaints at all - we felt very lucky.
Beau Bassinet.jpg

LHR-CPH - I booked a flight around Beau's naptime - 10am - with the hopes that he would sleep. He did! He fell asleep on me and there he stayed for entire 2 hours. We arrived in Copenhagen ready for the day!

CPH-LHR - Our return flight was also during a naptime - 1:30. He had been up all morning since debarkation, so he was eager to sleep finally. Once again, we had a great flight with a sleepy baby. Notice, I held him on every flight! Breastfeeding is wonderful and I'm so glad to have the opportunity to do this for our son - but my arms were so numb by the end of the flight that I wished Grumpy could have taken over at some point.

LHR-LAX - The flight from HECK! We had a 9:45am flight. How to keep a toddler entertained on a daytime flight for 10 hours?? Well, I guess I shouldn't complain too much because Beau did take 2 naps - but that still left 6+ hours in a metal tube with a chatty 18 month old who hates to be restrained in any way. We broke out all the FE candy, toys, iPads, etc...that we could muster in a carry on bag to help keep Beau from having a meltdown. For the most part - we were very successful. But, I'll admit, it was the longest flight ever because it was so exhausting trying to keep him entertained, fed and happy while not disturbing the other passengers around us. We did take a couple of walks and made trips to the bathroom for diaper changes but that can only eat up so much time. We were SO grateful when we landed in LA and could get - off - that - plane!

LAX-MRY - By this time we were exhausted. It was 2:30am London time, and our bodies were spent. We all boarded the plane and promptly fell asleep. All 4 of us. Thank goodness the flight was short and sweet. We had a friend pick us up and deliver us safely home. By the time we settled in for a quick dinner (7pm) we could barely keep our eyes open because we had been awake for 24 hours.

Out of 6 flights, 5 were very easy and comfortable. I am glad we won't have Beau as a lap baby after December, because I know I can't count on keeping him happy after we stop nursing (at some point down the road) Please feel free to ask if you have other questions!

A bit of a note to anyone actually reading this.....I have read many trip reports with amazing photography and detail.....and I am afraid that I don't have either of those skills. My photos were taken on my cell phone, and my memory really stinks. That's one of the reasons I thought I would write a trip report - to help me remember the trip - and have something to look back on when the details get too fuzzy. I am just a mom who took (mostly) photos of my family. A lot of the time I was too busy absorbing the details of the trip to take a lot of photos. So, please forgive the glut of family pics - but they help me remember time with my family, which is what we all agreed was the best part of the trip!

Sunday, June 14

We spent most of the day making sure that the house was picked up, luggage ready and weighed, and the pets were taken care of. A huge part of any trip is making sure that the homestead is taken care of, which includes my mom (who lives with us) and the pets are taken care of. The dogs would stay at the house, since we hired a caregiver to come over every day for my mom, and good friends of ours were coming over daily to walk them. Our cat was boarded at our vet, and we sadly dropped her off.

My mom has lived with us for about 12 years, which causes us quite a bit of stress. Note she is not coming on this trip, as she is not physically or financially able to make the trip, and frankly, most of my vacations are a much needed break from her. We try to get one mom-free trip per year, just to be with our family. This was that trip:)

So, we packed up the car and headed to the Monterey airport - about 30 minutes from us. I have been to a lot of airports in my day - I used to be a FA for ATA - but Monterey ranks as one of the least stressful airports ever. We let our son run around for about 30 minuted before it was time to board. This was Avery's first time using airstairs to a plane, as we usually go from SJC or SFO, but opted for a closer departure this time.

We settled in, with Beau on my lap, Avery next to me and Grumpy across the aisle. 45 minutes later, we were in LA! Easy peasy!

By the time we got off the plane, changed terminals and made it to the Tom Bradley international Terminal, we didn't have a lot of time left for our transfer. We went to the very-crowded food court and since Avery really wanted Panda Express, we trudged over in that direction. The line was 15 deep, so we went over to Umami Burger, forked over $60 and wolfed down our very small burgers. The sweet potato fried were delicious, though!

We made our way to the British Airways departure gate, changed Beau into his pajamas and boarded the plane. We thanked the gate agent who took our stroller (and handed over a small box of See's Candies with the hopes we'd see our stroller again) and boarded the A380. We chose this departure because I love the A380 and the nighttime departure would allow Beau to sleep (or so we hoped!).

Would Beau sleep? Would we ever see our stroller again? Tune in for another installment when I may figure out how to rotate my photos so you don't have to tilt your head to see them.......

Glad overall flights went well for the most part with an 18 month old. Did you have bulkhead seats? Next summer my baby will be almost 14 months and our flight to London will be an overnighter from California. This makes me hopeful. Flying with him in such a long flight makes me most nervous about our cruise!!!

Can't wait to read more about your trip and Norway.

Yes, we did have bulkhead seats - and we booked Premium Economy, which added to the spaciousness of our "area". I loved that we could choose our seats at booking - another reason we chose British Airways. With other airlines you have to wait until 24 hours ahead or similar to select seats. With BA, we chose at the time of booking for no extra charge. Wonderful!

I was also very nervous about the long flights with Beau, as we flew with him to WDW last November and he was a handful then. However, I took that experience as guidance for this trip. Booking a nighttime flight is the way to go. Unfortunately, on the way home, we didn't have that option, but at some point during that 10 hours, there will be time for your little one to sleep. A word of warning, though, if you book a 'lap baby' ticket, you do not get a meal for your little one. We knew that going in, but it is not well-advertised. Let's just say that there was another family on our departing flight who didn't know that - and they found out after they had eaten their own meal. Oops.

Yes, I know it is a blurry photo - but as i said, cell phone + mom trying to get settled onto a flight! Beau was exploring the plane...as was his sister....

AveryA380.jpg

Our plane appeared brand new - and we were very glad we decided to upgrade to Premium Economy. We had 2 bulkhead seats, with Grumpy right behind us. Fortunately, the woman next to him at the window slept the entire flight:)

Once Beau settled into the bassinet (YES, he DID sleep!!!) meal service started. Avery went with the pasta (bland but not terrible) and I went with the steak. I thought it was pretty good for typical airline food. The best part was the fantastic New York-style cheesecake. I ate Avery's and Grumpy's!

A380 meal.jpg

While there were many movies to choose from, I chose to sleep as much as possible. We had a very smooth flight, and before you knew it, we were approaching London, with a light breakfast service to welcome us. Yes, our stroller was there at the jetbridge waiting for us! Score another one for British Airways!

For such a long flight, and a long travel day, we were very excited to get into London and see what could be seen! I was also excited to surprise my family with where we were staying - I had changed our hotel and they had no clue! I hoped that the gamble would pay off:)

But first - where is our driver? He is supposed to be here waiting for us outside Passport Control - but that DID take a long time.....Where is he? Hello? There is no one waiting here with our name on a fancy card.....no one here to help us with all these bags. Uh oh. How would we get into London now?

Great start to your report! It was fun meeting you all and we thank you for having the directions to the ferry in Stravanger all mapped out for our little group.

Hello! Glad to hear from you:) I was glad that the day went as smoothly as it did! Although you did beat us up to the top! Are you writing a report as well?

While my family huddled around our gaggle of bags (we had 6 checked bags – one for FE gifts alone!) and 4 carry-ons, so we had quite the stash!) I picked up the phone and called our ride – 24/7 Transfers. Evidently, the driver had just left (he did wait an hour, so I guess I shouldn’t be too mad) but he was still in the vicinity. We pushed our stash outside the terminal and waited about 10 minutes but there he was! We had a nice big van for the 45 minute ride into London.

While we were waiting for our ride, I got an email from our hotel that they upgrading us! I was so excited I thought I couldn’t contain my excitement. I tried – I really did – but Avery noticed that I was a little TOO happy. I told her it was about the hotel, but that’s all I could say.

So, because I am a very detailed (neurotic?) travel planner, I knew when our driver made a wrong turn when getting close to our hotel. He didn’t believe me until he pulled over for directions and the pedestrian confirmed what I said! Anyway, we got to the Plaza on the River and when I tried to pay using my credit card – the driver told me his terminal was broken. AGH! So, Grumpy went to the ATM to get cash – but it, too, was broken. Never fear, the front desk at the hotel gladly exchanged some US dollars to Pounds and we were able to bid the driver adieu! Not the best airport transfer experience we have ever had and I am not sure I’d recommend them based on this trip.

However, once we stepped inside the hotel lobby, all was quickly forgotten. It’s amazing how a friendly face and a glass of champagne can turn your day around! The delightful check-in staff confirmed our upgrade to a 2 bedroom suite with Big Ben view and balcony! Now, as you may recall, I had originally booked a room at the Premier Inn County Hall as we were pleased with the very low (for London) rate. However, I kept looking, as we did have quite a long time to plan this trip, and I found the Plaza on the River – same great location BUT with a lot more room for us!. So, I contacted the hotel directly and was amazed that the reservations staff was on top of it. They actually read my email, made specific recommendations based on my requests, and actually followed up to make sure that I was happy. And, was I ever? I only booked a 1 bedroom suite, but we were upgraded to a 2 bedroom with the same AMAZING view. It would be about $1000 more for our 3 night stay than the Premier Inn, but I had NO doubts about the change once we arrived.

We stepped into our suite and my kids started running around – they were so excited! We all went out on the balcony and were grinning from ear to ear as our view was to-die-for. We were on the 4th floor and we could see so much from our huge balcony – the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, the London Eye, etc…Then there was the suite to explore!

London view.jpg
The view from our balcony!

We had 2 large bedrooms with floor to ceiling windows, 2 bathrooms – the master even had an enormous soaking tub and shower big enough for 2! We had a full kitchen with table, dining table for 6, living area with chairs and a sofa and even a washer/dryer! So – much – space! Combine this with the great service, and I knew I had picked a winner!

By this time it was past 8pm and we needed to figure out whether to head out or stay in. I knew most restaurants were about a 10 minute walk, so I suggested room service. Grumpy, on the other hand, wanted to get out and explore. I tried to tell him that we didn’t want to push it too much with the kids on the first day. So, we compromised and went downstairs to the hotel restaurant, Chino Latino.

It was a trendy-looking restaurant, and we weren’t sure we’d do well with the kids, but no worries, we were shown a great table and had an even better meal. The food was outstanding – especially the kids’ meals! We had a small smattering of small dishes to share and were thrilled with everything. The restaurant was supposed to be a pan-Asian style restaurant with some Latino influences, but we felt that it was strictly Asian. What do we know? All I do know is that it was outstanding!

After dinner, we went back upstairs, got comfortable and tried to put the kids to bed. Avery was easy – she was thrilled to have her own bed AND her own bedroom! Beau was not convinced it was bedtime, though, and we had quite the time settling him down in his crib.

Would Beau sleep? Would any of us? Tune in to our next installment to find out!
