I see you have received much positive information about mini-schnauzers from all the previous posters. I would like to add my honest and limited .2 cents.
I am absolutely not an animal person; they make me nervous due to their unpredictability, they smell, they require alot of work, blah, blah, blah. Growing up, my parents never wanted the responsibility of a pet, so we never had one - which is obvious that is where I got this attitude. Even as an adult, I saw no reason to waste my time with a pet of any type. Hmm, I kind of felt the same way about having children; I was 35 years old before I had my one and only . . . child, not dog.
Then, my DS started begging us for a puppy. I admit I didn't want to do it. I tried every way possible to get out of it, but eventually figured I could always emotionally scar my child in some other way, so I gave into the dog request.
My DH researched dog breeds. My only request was that the dog not shed, not be yappy and not be overly big. I practically had minor depression about the whole thing and told my DH to find it while my DS and I were at WDW so he could deal with the whining the first couple of nights. Well, aside from occasional yappiness, the mini schnauzer my DH got 3 years ago has been incredible. I absolutely, unequivocally love this dog and think that mini schnauzers are about as great as they get.
Now I'm not saying I would ever want another dog - they still are a big responsibility - but I can't imagine life without our little Thunder in it. And, living in Oklahoma, when we say Thunder - we are never sure if we are talking about the weather, our favorite NBA team or the darn dog.
