Tell me Not to Worry - we will enjoy the crusie

Pretty much just agreeing with everyone else here--but I am going to throw my own spin in anyway:

- serious risk of bed bugs and we need to ensure we dont bring our luggage in the house after the cruise

The risk is NOT serious. It is there, just as it would be at a hotel, summer camp, etc. In the great big long bed bug thread of a few weeks ago only one person had any experience with bed bugs on DCL (the OP), and that was uncomfirmed (and as many pointed out, as nothing happened to the other persone sleeping in the same room really probably wasn't even bed bugs at all). Some people take lots of bed bug precautions, which is fine if that is what worries them (and Bed Bugs can happen), but I got the impression they take those exact same precautions at all hotels, etc.

- food is not all that great - best food seems to be with room service (and Palo which I cant take my kids to)

Honestly, other than the soufle I am not all that fond of the food in Palo (too picky I guess--I can't imagine most KIDS wanting to eat anythign there), though I love the atmosphere. The other food is not top of the line gourmet, but I think for most tastes it is very good. We always enjoy it. It is at least as good as a CHili's. Applebees, etc (where most of us with kdis usauly end up) and generally much better.

- a real mixed bag on the quality of the servers - probably will need to wait for wine, etc

Most servers are EXCELLENT. If you truly get someone bad, don't wait to complain until you are back at your keyboard after the vacation. Talk the head server and get someone new (unlikely you'll need to).

- excursions through Disney are over priced

Excursions through any cruise line are over priced. You can read up on them plenty ahead of time and determine of they are worth the cost to you or not. We have been on 8 crusies (4 DCL) and only ever taken one excrusion (which was worth it by the way--to Kohunlich in Cosat Maya) as we enjoy doing our own thing in port (and yes we do have little ones).

- pool is very crowded and you can only really use the one with the water slide at off-peak times

You're cruising in October so pools will not be as crowded as they are in summer (check the travel dates of those who complain about this stuff).

- my dinner is the late time slot so my kids will probably sleep through most meals

We MUCH prefer late dining. This lets the kids be awake and alert for the shows (which they care about a lot more than the meal). Also, we find they adjust times quickly and easliy (and you can start pushing dinner back 15-20 minutes each day for a couple of weeks before you go to ease them into it if needed)

- the really good kid activities are difficult to get into - there can be long line ups with 30-45 minute waits to do them

NOT IN OCTOBER! You are not going during summer, spring break, holidays, etc. We sail in the lower seasons and there is never a very long wait.

- lots of photo ops with characters but again - 45 minute waits to do each one and the Disney photos are very expensive (people say they spend $500-1,000 on pictures)

Lines can be long (we just skip them if this is the case--it's up to you if these are worth a wait or not). But again, they shouldn't be as long in October. Sometimes we walk past characters (even big names like Cinderella) standing alone just waiting for someone to show up and take a photo with them. Photos from shutters are high (but no higher than any other crusie line). Take your own camera!!! We usually end up buying one 8x10 and Christmas cards IF they get a really good shot of the four of us. We take tons of pictrues on our digital camera and have many, many fabulous shots.

If you go with a positive attitude you should have a great time.

well, I haven't been on a Disney cruise yet, but I have been reading here for a whole year now, and honestly, the good FAR FAR outweigh the bad! In the whole year, I have only read about bedbugs ONCE! And there have been many, many threads started. So the chance of bedbugs is pretty much slim to none!

You are going to have a good laugh at your concerns once you have experienced a Disney cruise. There is nothing like it, you'll see. Try and think positive thoughts and allow yourself to be excited - this IS a big trip and you are going to be blown away, believe me.
Please, please, please read this post every day before you leave!:thumbsup2 The only thing wrong with these forums is the FEW nay sayers and fashion police that try their darndest to impose their ways and general unhappiness on the rest of us! Your concerns are the result of these FEW! Disney is... Disney! If you love Disney as much as we do, you can't help but have a Magic-al time and the trip of a lifetime:goodvibes

Ok - so I have been wanting to go on a Disney Cruise for 7 years.....been waiting for my kids to get to the perfect age - 5 and 8. We booked the Western 7 day cruise for October 20th 2007 and everyone is very excited.

UNTIL I started reading the DIS boards - now I am really getting worried that I have been caught up in the Marketing.

Here is what I have learned from the boards:

- serious risk of bed bugs and we need to ensure we dont bring our luggage in the house after the cruise
- food is not all that great - best food seems to be with room service (and Palo which I cant take my kids to)
- a real mixed bag on the quality of the servers - probably will need to wait for wine, etc

HELP ME to stop worrying - this is a small fortune for us and I need it to be a GREAT time for everyone. I hope I dont get off the cruise and think that I could have better spent my $$ going to WDW....(we have been to WDW 3 times with the kids and absolutely loved it....we are true Disney fans)

Thanks

This is ridiculous I've been on many many cruise 3 of them on Disney Magic and believe me you will have a great time.

I have never heard of beg bugs on a cruise. If there are some I'm sure those people brought them with them either from the hotel they stayed in before the cruise or their house. I would not worry about this.

The food is very very good the people that complain about the food are mostly people that either don't get out much or only like one type of food.

I have always had excellent wait staff and have always had my wine and other drinks waiting for me before I'm even seated.

The excursions on Disney are not over priced and are surprisingly less expensive than say Carnivals

Three summer cruises on Disney and have never experienced an over crowded pool. In October I'm sure you'll be more than fine.

Yes, you picked the wrong dinner time and your kids will probably sleep through dinner. Change your time when you get on the ship.

All the kid activities are easy to get into and I've never really seen any lines other than to get autographs. BTW lines are a part of Disney

Photo's are great and rarely is the line over 5 minutes. Yes I spent over $1200 in pics on my back to back last summer

All I have to say is it is Disney and Disney is and will always be MAGICAL!! Heck with FAITH, TRUST and PIXIE DUST iwith you on board it will be great!!!

I am basically speechless.....I must be doing something wrong then. if I keep going back...we have gone on 16 DCL cruises and only once did we have less than perfect servers....never a bed bug to be seen, never a 45 min wait to get a pic with characters, etc.

Just go and experience it for yourself before you get worried needlessly (sp). Everyone has different tolerance levels for things, everyone has different tastes, expectations etc. Take what you read with a grain of salt and.....JUST REMEMBER YOU MILEAGE MAY VARY.

We are going on the same cruise with you. I waited also until my kids were just the right age--5 and 10--both boys. We have early seating, but are considering switching to late. Don't worry--we are all going to have an awesome time!!!

Averysmommy-
We are on the same cruise as you. It is also our first Disney cruise. And my kids will be 8 and 5 on this cruise. We're in the same boat! (no pun intended ;) ) But seriously, if you read too much you'll overthink things. Just go and plan on having fun! That's what we're going to do. I am a planner by nature but I finally realized that if I overthink this then we're not going to have as much fun. So I've scaled back on my reading and research and am going to go with an open mind. You'll have a great time as long as you don't expect perfection!

Hi

I understand your concerns, we are cruising for the first time in Jan 08, I am a little apprehensive (but very excited!) as its costing A LOT of money and I want my family to have the best vacation they possibly can - Yes, it is a worry when you read posts where people have had bad experiences, but, when you put that into perspective with how many hundreds of POSITIVE posts and trip reports are shown each week and of course how many cruisers re-book while on board - well, it cant be all that bad can it? why would people work their tails off all year round just to pay for a few days of magic if it was terrible?

Dont read the negative posts if they are going to fill you with angst - just read all the Happy ones instead and get excited about your amazing upcoming trip! Its going to be fantastic! relax and enjoy :cool1:

We are going on our 3rd Disney Cruise this coming Nov. and have our 4th planned for Thanksgiving '08.

Please don't worry about things. As far as bed bugs, I think that was blown way out of proportion. It was never confirmed that it was bed bugs.

We think the food is very good, but then again you can never please everyone.

Our dd has used the kids clubs/activities everytime we have been on the ship and we have never run into any problems. The counselors are awesome!!!

Yes the pools do get crowded but there are tons of other things to do as well.

We have never stood in line very long for pictures, it moves rather quickly.
The pictures are expensive but the are really nice!

Try not worry and go enjoy your vacation and the time with your family.
I don't think you will regret it! Enjoy!

*Been on 4 cruises and never a bed bug.
*The food is awesome everywhere with Palos being the best.
*All of our wait staff have been great. They are human so they are not prefect but each one wanted to no more then give us the best. I don't drink but our servers have always tried to have what we would want at hand.
*I have always done DCL excrusion and felt that we got our money's worth. I like not having to plan and not worring if I can make a port trip work or not.
* I was always able to use the pools. There are times when they are busier than others. You may have problems getting a chair. I just watch and will move a towle if I feel it was just left behind. People are not to save chair although it happens all the time. I have never let that get to me.
*The late dinner may be an issue. You can call and be wait listed for early and if you don't get it before you cruise you can try to change it once on board. If you can changed it a short nap for the kids before dinner might work too.
*My grandkids never had any trouble getting into any of the activities they wanted to do.
*The longest we ever waited to see a character was about 10 min. And you go from one to the next each line is fairly short.

I say do the cruise and don't let those that expect to be the only ones on board spoil it for you. DCL has gone out of their way to make each of our trips special. The problems we had was because there were other cruiser who were rude and disrespectful of others. Again not something DCL can do a whole lot about. We are cruising againg in Stepember 07 and August 08. Have fun.

Oh my gosh! I've been on two DCL cruises and another one planned for 2008. Absolutely loved them. We had a group of 20 on the first cruise and 15 on the last cruise. Plenty of kids in all age brackets and never an issue. Loved our servers both cruises and never had an issue with the late seating (we had late both times - the youngest on the first cruise was 3). I love WDW but my best Disney experience has been on DCL.

Dear Ms Wart

I'm thinking three things

  1. First, I'm surprised you didn't mention the Titanic and Sea Diamond.
  2. Second, you left off the one thing that is a real concern and that is, getting sick on your cruise. Wash the kids hands often.
  3. Third, Relax, your cruise will meet your expectations. If you go expecting to enjoy yourself throughly you likely will. Go worried you might be disappointed and I won't be surprised if you are.

You are reading all the wrong posts :confused3 I have only been on 1 disney cruise and it was the 7 day cruise. I found the food to be great, not 5 star, but better than chain restaurants. Definetly better than McD's :rotfl: . One thing I really liked and was convenient was the fruit bar by the pool in the middle of the day. We ate from there for lunch everyday!

We have never had bedbugs! I read that the Disney Cruise boats are rated as the top clean boat there is!

The pools were crowded, but not that bad! I never heard of the Mickey slide being closed. The one time they did close the Mickey pool was because someone's kid pooped in it. so they had to empty it and clean it out real good. Yuck! They cleaned it right away. It wasn't an inconvenience.

The kids club was never a long line to check in. We were there during spring break! The characters line were never long. The only time it was long was on formal night when Minnie and Mickey were dressed in the formals. We got in line twice! The picture line was long to have your family pic done with a backdrop of the boat or the sunset, but worth it.

I felt like the service was top knotch! Our servers were a bit shy at first. One of them just got promoted and she was a little nervous the 1st night. But by that second night she was like an old friend to my kids. The other server was nice too, quiet a little, but by the 2nd nice he warmed up to them. We cried on our last dinner with them, they just become a part of your family in such a short time. They always greeted my children when they saw them outside of the restaurant, and gave them hugs, danced with them, taught them some words in their langauge. Get to really know where they are from and have them teach your children how to say hello, goodbye, how are you in their language. She was from Bulgaria which was the same country that my DD's rhythmic gymnastic coaches are from. When my DD got back home she told my coaches "Hello, we had fun on the cruise" in their language. So that was great fun.

You will have a blast. Don't listen to the Debbie Downers on the boards :rotfl:

Sue

First - I havent replied as I posted just before I went to see my parents and I just got back about an hour ago.

Second - Wow, what a response from the DIS community. I could not believe there were over 30 responses within just a few hours

Thanks for the feedback - I think I just needed someone to tell me to CHILL. The kids are so excited and I was starting to think that I have "over-sold" them on the cruise. Plus we are trying to convince friends and family to come too and I dont want to convince people and then they have a bad time.

It was the bed-bug posting that really shook me....I would have real trouble dealing with that but everyone is right - you can get them anywhere.

The person who commented friendly diners normally get friendly waiters speaks the truth - my whole family has always been real social with waiters at all restaurants and for the most part - we have always received good service.

Thanks again - great insight as always from the DIS

Hello AverysMommy,

For the longest time I've been lurking on these boards and enjoying greatly the advice and kindness (usually :goodvibes ) I've seen as people respond to questions. Your question s however the first time I've felt a need to write in, since in several ways some of your fears were my experience, although I should add that my DH and I still had a good time.

We also waited the longest time to go on a DCL cruise, in part because we kept on hoping to take our own child on such a trip, but after six years of marriage :confused3 we decided we couldn't wait any longer to go!. Two years ago we took a seven nighter and we did have a bad experience with our servers:scared1: . They were two lovely people (which is why I don't want to give their names), but good service is not the same thing as having kind people trying to serve you. My DH and I enjoy wine with dinner (and a few other times as well :lmao: ) and we found ourselves frustrated with the wine service. After awhile we simply gave up and accepted that it was not going to arrive with our food the way we expected:sad1:.

The other thing which your question reminded me of was the fact that we did pay a small fortune to Shutters. As I look at my scrapbook I see we spent slightly over $600 (even though we didn't buy the pictures in which my DH had his eyes closed :rotfl2: . Actually, I'm surprised I've kept that receipt since my DH and I had a real brouhaha over the amount.

Still, don't worry, and keep in mind that whatever issues might come up, the overwhelming majority of people have a great tiem on DCL (as we did) and keep on coming back for more.
