So I had been in a bit of a funk at work lately, and I told my husband I thought it was because we hadn't been on vacation in a while, and we had nothing planned looking forward. I had been monitoring the price of a 3-nt Dream cruise that our friends are taking, hoping and praying a *GT rate would come out. Well, it was 40 days away this past weekend and I finally said, screw it... it's just money, LET'S GO!!! So we're taking our DD 3 and DD 6mo on the Dream in December and paying $800 MORE than our friends paid when they booked it. WHAT THE HECK DISNEY??? $800 more for the same reservation, 6 months later? For 3 nights? They're crazy!!! But we're crazier for doing it.

But you know what? I woke up today, not thinking about how we spent way too much money (we can afford it, it's more an assigned "value" kind of dissonance)... instead a weight was lifted OFF my shoulders, b/c I'm going to see the smiles on my girls' faces and it will be all worth it. Oh, and the reminder that we need to start planning cruises in advanced again. Haha.
Happy Monday, DISers!

Oh man! I hear you... when we did the Alaskan cruise the CAD was so much stronger than the USD, so our hotel and dining the few days before were killing US. Haha. Yes, we did have the 10% discount from a previous cruise (would have been $900 more---lol, crazy!) so that made it slightly less painful... and we'll get to use the $100 OBC towards tips, so we won't be spending much on board.

Is this not just the same as hotels and flights, it's surge pricing based upon how many places are booked at the moment?

Yes, in fact I do this "check" right before every cruise, go and see how much more I'd have paid if I booked late, always makes me feel good LOL.

Two years ago, the US and CAN dollars were almost egal. It was amazing!

I recently booked a cruise for next year that cost us 1700$ US. With the conversion, it cost us 2400$... 700$ more. :scared:

Generally speaking, yes, it's surge... but it's a far greater surge than it used to be... and last year I got a great deal on *GT for the same weekend, so maybe I was just living in the past with my hope. :)

An $800 increase in 6 months isn't too bad. It's a lot worse on many other sailings.

Totally know this feeling - I always need to have a vacation in the works or I start getting antsy and burnt out with work. Have fun and think of all the memories you are going to make rather than the money you are spending! It will be worth it :)

I don't think your crazy at all. A couple of years ago I decided about 3 months before our WDW vacation that I wanted to add a cruise. I waited and waited for GT rates. They never came so I said screw it, and went ahead and booked the cruise. I had been working a lot of OT. I had the money, and I really didn't care. I've only taken 2 cruises that haven't been GT or other discounts. I'm horrible at planning in advance. I just have too much going on in my life to think far ahead. I also don't like to book vacations until I actually have the money to take it. I'm definitely in the minority on these boards because most people on here are long term planners.
