Ok, This is my first trip to Disney...myself, DH, DS 8yr old and DS 6yr old. I've been looking at the resorts and really like POR but after speding all day running and going I would like to be able to put the kids to bed and then be able to go into another room and have cocktail or watch TV...just realx.

I can't afford a villa or suite and before all you campers say anything I live in New Hampshire and tent camp all the time....just don't want to do it at Disney.

The cabins look perfect but the campground looks only OK. Since we camp a lot and there are so many nice campgrounds up here I am having trouble being excited about the surropundings and the pool......etc.

Can you guys tell me about the cabins and the campground so I can make the right decision for us?

The cabins have a queen bed and a set of bunk beds in the room. One full size murphy bed in the living room. We slept 4 adults and one child. We had plenty of room.

We brought our food and snacks, kitchen had everything that we needed (pretty sure). There is several sites that tell you exactly what all is in each cabin. Remember charcoal for the grill if you want to grill out.

Set up will be perfect to put the kids to bed and relax on the porch with a "drink" or watch a good DVD in the livingroom. Bring some camp chairs for the deck if you have room to pack a few. Then you can enjoy the deck without having to sit on the picnic table.

Now about the park. Wow, it is great. You will love the pool areas. If you have ever experienced Disney World and are familiar with their top notch "everything", well Fort Wilderness is no exception. I believe it is awesome all the way.

Now this is my personal opinion, but if you are staying in the cabins, you will get the most enjoyment out of the park and not have to get stressed with the bus system IF you rent a golf cart. I know this is an extra expense, but WELL worth it. It makes transportation so easy and it makes exploring wonderful. You could bike, but the golf carts are cool and fun. I think that to see the whole campground and get the most out of your time, having a GC makes this happen. I have seen some get moody about the wait time for the buses that take you all around the grounds. Now, a GC is not necessaary, just in my opinion well worth the extra dollars.

Hope you enjoy your time at FW!

Any way you experience it I am sure it will be a nice and memorable vacation!

Well, I am sure that you will find that most here are pretty prejudiced toward the Fort. I can tell you that my family LOVES IT. It may not have the nicest pool in WDW, but it does have alot more, such as the stores the marina, the hoop dee doo, Trails end, Crockets tavern, and so much more. It is by far the nicest campground we have been to, and the cleanest. It also comes with all the perks of all the other resorts, like Magic hours, etc. Me personally, I don't think the cabins are worth it, when there are people like Tina who will rent you an amazing 5th wheel, allready set up and stocked for alot less. You can check out her site here.

I am sure that many more will chime in so sit back a relax, the sales pitch is just getting started, and by the way

Well.....this is the first time a question like this since Ive been on board.

The cabins ARE very nice...one of the nicest campground cabins Ive ever stayed in. Spacious bathroom, well equipped kitchen, and very comforable bedding.

I hate to admit this, but you're right, the campground itself isn't as pretty as it has always been due to the recent clearing of foriegn vegitation. In fact,...it looks like a war zone right now. But the cabins are situated in a way that the grounds disarray would dampen the spirits of the trip.

Yes, the pools need updating...plans are in the works..but for now, again...I hate admitting it..but they currently lack character.

The thing that holds interest for most is the unending supply of activities, and not being cramped up in a hotel room, along with the fact that most campers enjoy the company of other campers. You dont ever hear people saying that they enjoy the company of other hotel guests....chances are, you'll never meet the other hotel guests.

If this isnt your thing...then maybe one of the other resorts would suit your needs better. Personally, I prefer the outdoors and and the way camping tends to bring families together..as well as meeting fellow campers and shooting the sh.., but thats just a choice of mine..if it werent for the love of camping in general..Id prefer a nice resort, I guess.

Why spend 250+ on a cabin if you dont like the campground, when the resorts are sometimes cheaper.

we have stayed at WL,CR,CB,PO, AKL,all of the ALLSTARS,FW cabins,FW campground ... I may have forgotten some, our favorite is the campground,#2 would be the cabins. I would say go ahead try it, you'll love it.

WOW keep the great comments coming! We do LOVE camping and love fellow campers. I guess I just expected more of a WOW factor with the grounds and pool. We also always rent a golf when camping at larger resorts and it is a ton of fun!!

And fishing ,DON"T forget about FISHING !! Got really GREAT fish'ing if you do a guided trip on the lake. And most times the fish'n isn't too shabby from the shore if you don't want to go the $$ guided trip. ..They also have horse buggy rides, pett'n zoo , hosre trail rides , free nightly movies, etc. But just don't forget the fishing !....MR.:goofy:

We love the fort. When our 3 kids were younger we stayed in the cabins all the time. I love the space for the kids to run around outside and not worry
about making noise in the room like in a hotel. We are now DVC owners and my kids are teenagers, but we still love to go to the fort. Last week we rented bikes and rode all over, we looked at the huge horses in the barn, walked the trail to Wilderness lodge (saw 9 or 10 deer. huge woodpeckers, rabbits etc). We had takeout from trailsend, 19.99 for a chicken dinner for 4, and ate at a picnic table. Then we had icecream on the beach and rode the boat over to catch a ride around on the monorail. So, even though we don't stay there anymore, We still love the Fort. I am sure your boys would love it.
