I have read some negative reviews of Shutters.

That being said, I am still considering a photo package because it might be the only time I can get my entire family on one cruise.
We will have connecting cabins.

Please share your thoughts on the best way(s) to utilize the photo package.

If you're going to purchase a full package, just get your photo taken at all photo ops that you can. The odds are that you'll wind up with plenty of nice photos that way.

If you're the type of family that has no issue with taking the time everytime you find a photo op, that's the way to go.

But, if you're fairly sure that you may only want a few photos, I'd suggest purchasing a smaller photo package (10 or 20 photo packages, depending on the length of the cruise). If you find that even that number of photos are more than you want, you can cancel any package for a full refund, as long as you do so by the LAST FULL DAY ONBOARD. In the past, I've purchased a 10 photo package, and after figuring out we only wanted two of the pictures, cancelled the package and just bought the two individual photos.

One note, for the full digital package, each room/reservation must purchase it's own package, if you want all photos of everyone included. Now, if the two rooms are a nuclear family (mom & minor kids in one room, dad and minor kids in the second), both rooms can be included in one package. If the two rooms are not a nuclear family, as long as one room purchases the full digital package for full price (and the pre-cruise discount price counts as full price) the second room can purchase the full package at 50% off.

We purchased the full package for our first cruise and we were generally very happy with it. We took every opportunity to get photos taken and ended up with a bunch. Some were not great but we had several that turned out really nice. They even took a few candid shots during dinner one night and on CC.

I likely won't do the huge package on future cruises to save some $$. I'll likely do as Shmoo suggests and just buy 10 or 20.

If you like pictures of the family..... the photo packages are great. You see huge lines at the counter on the last day.

For some... getting the family to the photo studio is not easy. On a cruise it is so convenient and everyone is at the best on formal night.

The digital CD are a concern....
  • I think the images were only 2mb.
  • not everyone likes the pixie dust borders.

We went on one of the Star Wars day at sea cruise so we realized there was going to be plenty of photo ops, so we pre ordered the "all digital" picture package prior to the cruise and saved 15% seemed like it was $295. We had several pictures, I can't remember exactly, but it was over 200 or close to it.

The system they use goes mostly by facial recognition, so you do not really need to scan your KTTW card. So several pictures of our kids with their grandparents, several of all of us at dinner, photos of us on the aqua duct. As the wife and I relaxed in the room, our kids would go to character meet and greets by themselves and got those photos as well

Yes, there are glitches, some of our pictures did not turn out that great, eyes closed, etc. a few photos never showed up and we got a few of other families mixed with our CD, but before the end of the cruise you can remove those from your profile. There also is a search all pictures for a certain day so you can look for any missing photo ops that are not showing under your profile.

All in all, we were very pleased, plus, with the USB drive of digital pictures, we can choose what size print to order at home. On the ship, if you buy the prints they are all 8" x 10" and 6" x 8" ( ?) pictures.

If you are going on a 7 night the all digital package is well worth, especially if there is a special theme, Star Wars, Holidays, etc.

One advantage of Shutters is that you can concentrate on being in on the fun instead of having to take pictures of others doing it. However, the Shutters photographers are not everywhere on the ship like on some other cruise lines. They are mainly in the atrium and at character meets. Sometimes you will see them at the MDRs, Remy, or Palo. I never saw them on the pool deck nor were they at the character breakfast. I did buy the package though because we got a lot of pictures of our grand children.

we always get the package and have found the photo quality is great. customer service is not that great, as others mentioned. pre-purchasing is the way to go if you are on a 7-night or longer. then again, we have 2 kids and do many character photos.
