Tell me about your NATURAL PET FOOD......

Our beagle does really well on Taste of the Wild other foods tend to leave his stools too loose resulting in anal gland issues

I have a beagle as well. she came from the breeder eating taste of the wild in salmon flavor. we tried switching her over to purina puppy once we got done the first bag... big mistake. she smelled sooooo bad. also--because of all of the filler, there was 2-3 times the amount of waste to pick up. it was pretty yucky. we got her right back on the taste of the wild. it's worth the extra money!

My dog has both environmental & food allergies. We feed him Wellness fish & sweet potato kibble. I spent a lot of time reading labels before selecting this brand. His coat is beautiful & he's very healthy. My only complaint is the fish breath. LOL

If you want to feed your cats tuna, take a look at Trader Joe's "tuna for cats." It's very inexpensive & has taurine added to it. I just give it to my cats as a treat & they absolutely love it.

Hope this helps!

After the big pet food scare 3 or 4 years ago, I started feeding my 3 cats California Naturals chicken & brown rice dry food. It's a limited antigen food - one protein source and one grain source, and not a bunch of other funky ingredients. One of my cats had very bad skin problems, which cleared up within a few days of starting this food.

My cousin has a big white fluffy dog. (sorry I dont know which type)
A few years back her vet told her to start cooking for the dog- sweet potatoes (fresh) and brown rice. SHe said the dog loves it and at least she knows exactly what is in it. I am not sure if she switches on and off with store bought food.
might be worth investigating!

I have two Labs and a Beagle and they eat Canidae All Life Stages. I used to feed Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul and that was a good food, too.

My DH works for Freshpet and if you have small dogs that like wet food, it is a great option, too (it comes in refrigerated rolls or small bites, too). But, my big dogs would eat WAY too much of it for me to feed it to them all the time! It is worth checking out. You can find it in grocery and pet stores in a cooler in the pet aisle (it is refrigerated).

I am trying AvoDerm Natural for Seniors, I can't find many good Senior dog dry food. She needs the Glucosamine and Chodrotin (sp) for her arthritis and this brand is the only one I can find. Any other suggestions for me to try that is better for her?

Our 5 yo border collie is on 3/4 of a cup of Instinct - Chicken with a teaspoon of Evo - Chicken mixed with a splash of water twice a day. His former owners went with this food combo after trying many.

We feed our cat PetGuard and have for years. Honestly, I think she'd be OK with any brand, but she is used to this one because our other cat had to eat it. He had UTI issues and gut issues and it was the only food that agreed with him. We order it from www.petfooddirect.com , but we used to be able to get it from Whole Foods with a 10% case discount when we lived near a Whole Foods. We buy the big cans and keep them in the fridge...it actually works out pretty economically. Our cat is 13 and healthy so perhaps that's a testament to her diet.

ETA - My sister feeds her dog a raw diet and swears by it. I forget the name of it, but you buy it in frozen tubes. Honestly, it totally grosses me out, but her dog has been eating it for years and is healthy so I guess it is good stuff.

We have a Westie puppy and I would like to know what would be the best food for him. He tends to smell horrible, and I really think if I got the correct food it would help with that. Also, his coat is not a bright white and has some dark spots. Other that that he is a happy and healthy puppy!!

Cat is on Wellness wet, for about a month now and plan on switching her from Science diet dry to Wellness dry too. The cat box is less smelly and not nearly as much to scoop since started her on the Wellness Wet.

Dog started switching today to Newman's organic dry will mix his food for the next couple of weeks so his tummy doesn't get upset . Hoping his poop situation gets better too lol. He happily ate it this am , mixed with his old food.

We have a German Shepherd with a very sensitive stomach - we have fed Taste of the Wild salmon formula, EVO poultry, beef, and fish formulas, Wellness Core poultry, and Orijen poultry and fish. They are all fantastic grain-free foods with human-grade ingredients. Orijen is our favorite, but we feed EVO most often because it's the easiesr to find. EVO, Orijen, and Wellness Core all run about $55-60 a bag for a 30lb bag, at the stores we shop at. Taste of the Wild is a bit cheaper because it's lower protein.

Good luck finding a great food that works for your dog!

Not sure if its any better, but if I remember correctly Blue Buffalo has Glucosamine and I think Chondrotin as well. They carry a blend especially for seniors. Our 2 cocker spaniels are 3 & 4 years old. We feed them the Chicken & Rice Blue Buff. I know they have a website so you may be able to get out the ingredients there. They also offer a $5 coupon on their webpage.

Our peek-a-pug has allergies and we have settled on Natural Balance LID sweet potato and fish formula. :goodvibes

You have to be careful there are a lot of pet food out there that says they are organic that is great but their nutritional value is not good for your pet examples of this will be harmony dog food. We have 5 dogs and a persian cat and we feed them all taste of the wild. Our cat is 4 year old and never had a hair ball. Also in dog food don't assume that better price means better food. There are so many dog food out there that are expensive most of them don't have good ingredients in them (great examples for these are Nutro, eukanuba, science diet). I look for 2 things in my pets food nutritional value, fillers and preservatives use. Taste of the wild we found is the best food for the best price (nutritional value is great, high in protein not many fillers or cheap fillers and it is ethoxyquin-free). Wellness is also a great product but I foudn it to be more expensive and only wellness core will compare to TOTW. Orijen is another great pet food but I only found it to be a lot more expensive than TOTW. EVO was purchased last year by Iams/Eukanuba which has many people doubting that they will keep up with the quality. Vets don't usually recommend switching brands often or mixing food you have to keep in mind that every dog food is research and design for long period consumption and for a nutritional value alone.

Try Taste of the wild, wellness, or orijen. I would also recommend to get an anti-microbial shampoo. It could be that the odor is coming from bacteria in his skin. For the shinny of his coat the food should help but if you want something extra you can get some omega 3 pills. If you don't see any improvement in 2/3 months with this changes I would say go see the vet the cause for his dark spots, smells and coat not being shinny could be something else. Has he been tested for parasites?

There is nothing special about senior dog food. The best thing for a dog with arthritis is remove grains and starchy carbohydrates of their food and make sure he is at a healthy weigh. Again great dog food that are grain free wellness core, taste of the wild. For the Glucosamine you should get a supplement that provides enough amount of glucosamine I don't think I found one dog food that has enough glucosamine for a dog with arthritis. Omega 3 fatty acids are great to reduce inflammation which will be a great extra regardless which dog food you feed him. If you wanted further recommendations in which kind of food to feed him within a brand Taste of the Wild has vets answering their questions and they can guide you to which of their formulas are better for your case. I hope this helps.

we've been very happy with both nature's variety and solid gold and tend to rotate between the two brands.

costco's own brand dog food, kirkland, is also very good quality when you read the ingredients and our dog has done very well with that. it's considerably cheaper than most of the other brands discussed so far.
