Tell me about working for Kirby vacs??

My ds 20 is convinced he will make big bucks working for Kirby vacs door to door sales.....He claims his friend is doing very well selling this door to door....I find it hard to believe....these vacs are 1500-2000....I think they get these kids in there in hopes that the parents, relatives and friends will buy one....He said they work from 10-10, 6 days a week....We are not thrilled with this endeavor.....
Anyone have experience with this...?

I own a Kirby vac, and so do a lot of my friends and neighbors, so I think there is definitely a market for them. I don't know about making big bucks - we got our Kirby guy down to $975 on our vaccuum, so I don't know how much he really made off the sale. A job is a job - but I wouldn't count on it being a permanent thing.

He said the distributor pays 350-500 for the Kirby and anything over 500 they keep. Did you buy it from a door to door salesman?

Yes I did. And the thing was, I couldn't get the guy out of my house! He wasn't leaving until we bought a vacuum. I really wanted a Kirby, but he was way too pushy! And actually I just looked at the receipt because I was unsure of what we paid, and it was actually $900. I found it funny that he kept getting on the phone to talk to get "permission" from someone to lower his price. I wonder who he was really talking to!

My father sold them....now this is back in the 1950s.....they still owe him several hundred dollars!

He mentions it from time to time but he's not holding his breath.

I had one and hated it. It was very very heavy. I think with the Dyson out there at about $400.00 people are getting wiser to not paying Kirby prices. IMO The Dyson is much better then my Kirby ever was.

I had a friend try to make it in the kirby world and she flopped Not saying your son will but its hard to sell them

I personally dont care for kirby vaccuums but when I managed an apartment complex years ago a couple applied that both worked selling kirbys. Now they both sold them and the husband was the area manager so I am sure he got some kind of extra kickback for that but I can tell you they made more money than my husband does being a navy pilot. I suppose it could work out if your son was good at it.

I told ds that he need not even bring the Kirby to my house because I was very happy with my Dyson....The whole thing sounds very fishy to me....We are highly discouraging him from this venture....We would like to see him in college and working part time but I am beginning to realize that college may not be in the future for him....

There are many other work opportunities for a 20 year old-I would strongly discourage it.

I agree....It sounds like a scam....very pyramid scheme sounding.... I think he is trying to procrastinate getting into the real world....He doesnt want to go to college "right now".....Dh has told him that to continue to drive our car, use our cell phone that he either has to be in school/part time job or get a full time job....I really think this is a stalling strategy.
