We are invited to our Nephews wedding the Sat before Labor Day. We've decided to make it our vacation for the summer. So please anyone who lives there or has vacationed there, give me info.
So far the only place I know I want to go is Schlitterbahn.

As long as I have lived here (28 years) I have never been to that part of Texas. I'll bump this for you as I'm sure someone else will be able to help.

What city is the wedding in? I can tell you that South Padre and Schlitterbaun are not close. I'm thinking 5 - 6 hours apart but then I haven't driven any further south than San Antonio down I35. Now I have been to Corpus Christi and North Padre but its been 22 years since we were there.

You can go across the border into Mexico at Brownsville for shopping if you should go to South Padre.

There is Sea World and Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio. Plus the Alamo.

there are 2 Schlitterbahn's. One is on South Padre Island. The wedding will be on the island, on the beach. They don't know for certain where on the beach yet. We will probably fly into Corpus Christi, rent a car and Stay either on or near the Island.

There is a Schlitterbahn in South Padre Island now. You can check it out on their website.

Other than that, it's a typical beach town, I haven't been down there in years. It's become quite the college student hangout, but the weekend you will be there, all the kids in Texas will be back in school so it shouldn't be overly crowded. You can also consider flying Southwest into Harlingen. The deep sea fishing is great. Check out this website:

thanks I'll check the airfare to Harlingen

apparently SW doesn't fly into Atlanta. We would have to fly into Houston anyway via another airline. All the flights into Harlingen are at least $125 more per person (round trip) than into Houston, but they are right around the same $$ as Corpus Christi. Now I'm tryign to decide if we should save the 500 and drive from houston to South Padre. We'd probably rent a car anyway since we plan to spend a week there.

So come on folks, anyone else have any ideas for our vacation.

Wow, the drive from Houston to South Padre would be quite a haul, lots of towns to go through and no Interstate, you're probably better off with Corpus Christi unless you can get a better rate into San Antonio. Delta should have a DFW connection into SA. The drive from SA would be Interstate hwy until Corpus and then mostly open rode to S. Texas.

thanks, I'll check the rates to SA. I thought my cousin was near Houston (thats one reason we thought of Houston) but turns out he is between Austin and SA.

If your cousin lives between Austin and san Antonio, you are better off flying to San Antonio and going to the 'original" Shlitterbam Water park just north of san Antonio. This city has LOTS to do...Riverwalk,and two "Roller Coaster" parks-Fiesta Texas and Seaworld.

FleurdeLise ... thanks. I thought of the origional Shlitterbam but not SW. I knew there was a SW in Texas but didn't remember where. Now most of planning will depend on DH's family. We don't get to see them often. If anyone else is going other than DNe Dad(I'm assuming he will be there most of the week before the wedding), we will plan to be on South Padre when the family is there.
Airfares to Corpus Christi have dropped about $30 since last night. Houston and Harlingen are about the same.

My mother can't understand why won't save money and drive. 1900 miles is a long way to drive IMHO.
