My dad wants to send us to Vegas...

Which is quite kind of him. He desperately wants DBF and I to see Vegas, where he and my mother go several times a year.

I used to go with my parents all the time up until I moved out on my own about 10 years ago. So it's been about that many years since I've been!

They have a zillion frequent flyer tickets which they said they would give us two to send us there whenever we want to go.

Obviously this year is out, as we have our Dec trip already set. Next year, we have our time share week in Orlando in late Nov.

But we may be able to go earlier in 2005.

We'll see. We won't have to pay for airfare, but we will have to pay for everything else. My parents are very knowledgeable about Vegas and how to save when you are there. But they are also kind of wealthy people so I don't know that my idea of saving and theirs is quite the same, ya know?

Does anyone have any money saving tips to plan a 5 night trip to Las Vegas?

Also, what would be some fun , non gambling, things to do there?
(Keeping in mind, we probably won't have a car)

Thanks all!

Sheri

First of all, check out a site like http://www.lvol.com -- lots of good research and info there. :)

Non-gambling things to do -- there's stuff like the fountains at Bellagio, The Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon, various roller coasters, a lot of shopping, different attractions at each hotel (like the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay and other things like that). There's shows, a wide variety of restaurants, and one of my favorite non-gambling things to do -- just walking from one casino to the other, checking out all the unique things each has to offer. :)

Does anyone know of any hotels that you do not have to be 21 to check in at Las Vegas? My daughter is going down to Arizona for Thanksgiving to visit her boyfriend, and they were thinking of driving to Vegas for a few nights.

I would guess that any of the non-casino hotels would allow under-21 guests to check in.

Actually, it's possible that even the hotels with casinos would allow it as well, as long as they're not gambling, I don't think the hotels would have a problem with them staying there. :)

If you're a Star Trek fan, be sure to check out the Star Trek experience at the Las Vegas Hilton. I know they've changed it from when we were there, but it's a really fun thing to do.

Another inexpensive thing that my DW and I did when we went was walk through each of the casinos on the strip and collecting $1 chips from each. Kind of a fun thing to do and they make for cheap souvenirs. Plus there are a lot of things to do inside and outside of the hotels that are either cheap or free.

My BF is a HUGE Star Trek fan. I know he'd love this :)

My best friend just called me from there yesterday. She is out there with her DD for a dance competition. They are staying at the Flamingo. She got there Sun and will come home Sun. She said a week there is WAY too long. She can see 3-4 days but not a week. They do not have a car. She said the food is not cheap like it is depicted in the tv shows. She also said that they had to be at the pool when it opened (10 a.m. ish) in order to get chairs. If you are not there when it opens, you will have to wait to get a chair until after 6 p.m. She called at 11 a.m. and the temp was 100 and called for 106 yesterday. She has been to FL a few times and said she would take FL over Vegas any day. Just thought I would share this!!

The rates are much lower Sun-Th than F-Sat. Go on the website and sign up for E-Mail offers.

shelbyjosh makes a good point. We stayed for 4 nights and were definitely ready to leave by then. We aren't big night life people or gamblers, and we got sick of the people slapping porn ads into our hands and all the comotion. I am very glad we went but probably will not visit again.

We took a tour bus trip to the Hoover Dam. DON'T DO IT! Rent a car instead. The bus took us to a vitamin factory on the way for a tour (and a convenient stop in their gift shop). This was after a 45 minute stop at their office to wait for more people. It took forever.
