Delta- yay or nay? I'm going to Canada with DH in September and it appears that Delta and Air Canada are tied for fares/flight times out of Columbus. Good experiences with Delta? Don't you have to pay for bags? I normally fly SW, so any Delta tips would be great!! :goodvibes

I don't fly much, but usually fly Delta.

Yes, you do have to pay bag fees UNLESS you get the American Express Delta Card (free for one year), then you get one bag free for every member of your party.

Seats are assigned, you can choose them when you book (some are blocked from choices for various reasons). No extra charge for seat selection.

I would fly with them again.

They are a "legacy" airline (in business for years with traditional rules), which means bag fees and change fees. As Sam mentioned, you can get 1 free bag per person if you get their AMEX card, which is free for the first year. Otherwise, $25 for the first checked bag each way. Change fee is $150 per ticket, so be sure if you purchase it.

I fly them all the time for business and have no major complaints.

I fly Delta for all air trips since I fly out of Detroit and we're a Delta Hub. My only complaint is that every few years, I will have a luggage problem. Either my luggage is slightly damaged or delayed by many hours when I reach my destination. I fly at least 2-4 times a year and this happens approximately every other year. More than likely, you will not have any problems with Delta.

Thanks everybody! Looks like we're going with Delta!

ALSO- we signed up for the SkyMiles. Have any of you gotten any free flights from that? We're not going to get the credit card... just the free program you sign up for. Our trip to Canada gives us 38,000 (ish) skymiles. Is this a lot??

38,000 doesn't sound right, that's more than going all the way around the world! If you are adding up your entire party, you can't do that, each person has to have an individual account. The minimum for a free ticket is 25,000 miles.

Hmmm... yeah maybe I got that number wrong. Maybe it's 3,800...... :rotfl:

I fly maybe ONCE a year. I have not gotten a free flight yet. BUT, if you get the AMEX card, in addition to the free bag (one per person), you also get 20K 'bonus' miles. Again, the first year is free. If you have four people travelling, you're saving $200 ($25/person each way)... even if you don't put anything on the card.

Or, I can send you a link and you get 30K miles if you spend $500 in the first three months. Send me a PM if you're interested. (full disclosure... I get some bonus miles if you apply and are accepted).

Flown Delta several times and never had a cancellation/delay/luggage issues/etc.

Always fly out of Detroit and it flight has always been a positive experience.

That being said, I go where the deals go !!!!! Flew Air Tran last time because the price was way better and that was a positive experience as well.
