Tell me about cruising in August. Too hot? Too stormy?

Hi! My family took a Western cruise in 2009 and loved it. I am trying to think of something fabulous to do on my 40th birthday next year to take the sting out of moving up a decade (end of August) and was considering using the milestone as leverage to get my husband "on board" :rotfl: to take another Disney cruise. It looks like we would be at Castaway Cay on my birthday, which would be a perfect way to spend the day.

The question is, is it miserable to cruise in August? Is it unbearably hot and full of hurricanes? Anyone care to share your experiences? Thank you!:goodvibes

I've cruised in Jan, Feb, March, June x2, August, Oct & Dec. August is our favorite month to cruise weather-wise (followed by June & Oct). Yes, you are in a summer weather pattern where you can get that afternoon 45 minute thunderstorm, but its actually warm enough to enjoy the water in the ports in Aug! (This from a Floridian!)

It's certainly not 'full of hurricanes.' Hurricane season is half of the year; 6 months long. The season peaks usually in late Sept/Oct because the ocean water warms up thru the summer and is nice & toasty then. They can form at any time. Hurricane Andrew was in August.

On our first August cruise, the weather was terrific and the ocean was as smooth as glass. The same was true for the first half of our B2B August 2011 cruise. We had a rough half day or so on the second half due to Hurricane Irene. We will definitely cruise in August again.

I've only cruised once in August but the weather was great (with the exception of the sail away party being moved indoors because of rain, which was over about 5 minutes after the party LOL.) Loved the water temp at Castaway Cay, and we saw no other rain during our 4 days (it might have rained at night but I don't remember.)

We did a 5 night Bahama cruise on the Dream in August, 2011. It was beautiful, no issues whatsoever. It was beautiful everyday, and don't remember it being too hot. Only drawback was 5 nights wasn't nearly enough time aboard the ship.

Cruised in August 2012. It was hot in the ports but not unbearable. Loved being at CC in August...the water was so warm!!

We cruised the 3'rd week of August last summer. It is normally against my travel rules to cruise during hurricane season, but the price and ship got me. We had great weather the entire cruise! Escaping the 110 degree Texas weather for the warm Caribbean sun was perfect for us.

I believe we were lucky though, a hurricane or tropical storm hit right after our cruise and affected the ships movement. And being from TX, anything under 90 degrees in the summer is a cold front.

Best of luck!
