Next weekend the hubby and I are going to Charlotte for a comic book convention. (I'm a Disney geek and he's a X-men Geek. A match made in heaven) We are staying downtown and I was wondering about family friendly places to eat. I looked up one place that looked great but it's not downtown. Lawans, anyone eaten there? I hear the soul food is amazing. Thanks.

Try Mert's Heart and Soul for great fried chicken and soul food. Don't expect much action Uptown (center city). It's pretty much a ghost town once 5pm and the weekend end hits.

My DH would tell you to go to South 21 for their onion rings and cherry lemon sundrop. It is just a little hamburger joint, the original one is a drive-in.

South 21 and Showmar's are both great. If you want to drive about a mile or 2 out of the city The Penquin is great. It's been on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives on the food network. The new Epicentre is lots of fun and has restaurants, bars, a movie theater, and blowling and is in downtown (in Charlotte we call it Uptown). There's also an italian place on 7th that is very good. I can't remember the name of it. Tic Tock Diner is a small cafe in Uptown, its very good, a local fave kind of place.

Oh Brixx Wood Fired Pizza and Fuel Pizza are also both very good and family friendly!

Love that place! Best burger I ever had, and excellent fried pickles and sweet potato fries. I wish they'd expand though. Don't go during peak lunch or dinner hours. It's very loud and cramped.

If you want breakfast I highly recommend The Original Pancake House.

Oh, I forgot about South 21. There BBQ is fantastic. I love their coleslaw. You guys are making me hungry. Now I'll have to go next week. Darn them being closed on Sundays.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'm going to try to get to penguins it sounds really good.

Its really great greasy spoon food. The waiters are very eclectic. I thin k it must be a requirement that you have at least 10 tattoos in order to work there LOL. But They're always friendly. Like a previous poster stated, it gets EXTREMELY crowded at lunch time especially. It's a small place with maybe 15-20 tables. My favorite things are the menu are the fried pickles and the fried bologna sandwiches....but I've never had anything there that wasn't good. Be prepared to leave feeling greasy but happy.
