Tell me about Boston Terriers

Here's a pic ( I hope) of Beth

Thanks for the link, I bookmarked it.

The eating cat poop worries me a little--although I currently have a gate to where the cat boxes are, because I think my DS2 would eat cat poop, too. Or at least play in it if he had the chance!

The only reason I care about breed is to determine size/temperment. The coloring wouldn't matter to us, and I would go with a mixed breed if I knew what it had mixed with, if that makes sense (don't need a BT/Great Dane mix!). But I appreciate the info on the mis-marking--I never would have known. And I would get a puppy, mostly because we have 2 cats that would want to train the dog to know its place on the totem pole, which would be at the bottom!

OMG!! My boston's name is BETH too!!!! LOL.
Short for Bethany.

She snores like crazy too and barks quite a bit. She is a cat poop eater too and eats earplugs too. That is JUST too funny. I had to look and make sure I hadn't already responded to this post!!

I forgot to add she will eat any small animal she can... She is the queen of possum slayers :) She chases the cats like crazy (but they are on to her) and I think she would be aggressive to other dogs too (she loves our lab).

I loved our Boston also. But, he killed our beloved cat. He had playful chased them once in awhile and we never anticipated that this would have happened. It was a horrible thing and so I would worry a bit about them being around smaller animals. He loved our daughter and was so gentle with people and small ones.

Just my little warning. Hope I didn't bring anybody done.

I think the aggression toward other animals is a terrier thing, certainly not confined to Bostons.

I have saw it (or rather the results) in several types of terriers, Rat, Jack Russell, Boston even Yorkies. :(

Yep. I gotta agree with you. Our Jack Russell was as bad (if not even worse) and she didn't like most people either.

She's beautiful!

Oh, thanks. We love her. THat pic was before her ears were up. Now they stand up like they are "supposed" to.

She is one of the best dogs I have ever had, even with all her 'quirks' LOL.
I have never been able to get her to sleep in the crate so she sleeps with us (first dog to EVER sleep with us) and snores something awful. the vet told me that he could do some surgery on her nose when we have her 'fixed' to help with the snoring, but I am not sure about that.

Here's a picture of our Boston when he was a young puppy

My mother has a 2 year old Boston. 1/2 her face is black and the other side is white. It's pretty cute. She is VERY active and barks A LOT. My daughter who is rarely bothered by dogs, is quite allergic to her. She needs meds to be in my mothers house and she also sometimes gets a rash. This is from a girl who lives with dogs and has been around them all her life. There is just something about my mothers dog that really bothers her. The dog also used to get aggressive when she didn't feel like moving. For instance, if she was sleeping on the couch and you touched her to make room for yourself. Or if you want her to go into her crate and she doesn't feel like moving. She rarely responds aggressively anymore. She is a funny little clown but very serious when it comes to her food. She is a pig. Oh, and her gas can clear a room. It is terrible.

If he/she is talking about stenotic nares, it is a very quick simple procedure that heals quickly.

Another Boston fan here (check the sig). We now have two and the are very good w/each other, but have been aggressive to other dogs. (I think because we were attacked by a larger collie on one of our daily walks.) They are great around children; love to play tag, fetch, ball, and have become very attached to the family. Each one wants their own "lap time" and can be a mite possessive. Deuce (in the sig) didn't bark much until we got Tillie, now they bark when the door bell rings or when someone (dog or people) walks by the window. They have gas at times but I think this can be controlled with the right dog food, we never give them people food. They love to snuggle and sleep w/us at night (under the covers if its very cold!). They are fantastic dogs!

Thanks! I appreciate everyone's replies and honesty. And the pictures are just so cute!

We live rural and have 2.5 acres, so a dog would have plenty of room to run and chase critters.

I would likely get an invisible fence, although a previous tenant had an Australian Blue Heeler (another great breed!) who was perimeter trained and never left our yard. He always loved to "herd" the children--it was funny.

How do they feel about water? We have an in-ground pool (fenced, of course). Are they afraid of water because of their short snouts?

I think we would have to train any dog to sleep downstairs due to people with allergies.

That is the only breed I have every known. They are the best with kids. They are sweet, smart and so loveable. You won't be sorry.

My current dog is Lily. She is actually white with black rather than the usual black with white. I just had to pick her out of the litter because she was so unusual. Let's see, in my 42 years we have had Tina, Jill, Miracle, Gumby, Tinker, Hal and Lily. They don't seem to have a long life span. The longest was Miracle who lived to be 11, the shortest, Hal who was 7. We lost all of ours to cancer except one who was hit by a car.

They are great pets!!

I can't say too much about the water issue, our Boston isn't too fond of the rain ( Go figure he was born in Seattle) but he is fine in the bath. As for training him to stay down stairs, that shouldn't be a problem they are very easy dogs to train. Our problem with Mason was his need to cuddle. He has to sleep next to a warm body, granted I spoiled him, so I guess it's my fault! Good luck and I hope you get one, they are a great addition to the family!
