The Disney Animation attraction is a favorite for many of us. I wrote up a DIS blog on this earlier in the year.

Love the Animation Academy as does my teenage daughter. Since your daughter likes to draw, I think she will enjoy it very much. We try to do it at least a couple of times each visit. The room is large and I have yet to see it completely filled. So if the weather is hot, if the lines are long or you just need a change of pace, it is a great thing to do. You will come out with a large(I should measure -maybe 20 x15 in.) piece of paper (your free souvenir), so if you are trying to keep this in good shape, it is good to do right before you plan to return to your room, visit your locker or leave the parks for the day. I pack a cardboard tube in my luggage so I can protect the drawings on the journey home. We also got an artist portfolio to put them in so we have a book of our drawings over many trips.

Each session takes about 20 minutes. When you enter the art of animation building the line entrance is just to you left. usually there is a cast member at the podium whoc can tell you what the character will be inthe next session and how long it will be before it starts. No real advantage to being at teh front of this line so browse other areas until it is time to go in.

The sessions start on the hour & half hour's. We were in for about 15 mins. You have an actual Disney Animator that walks you thru the steps in drawing the chosen character. It's entertaining & also a lot of fun to do......it will make an artist out of anybody!!

We love it. We escaped the 100+ degree temps and learned how to draw Donald Duck.

As many times as we have been in this building somehow we've always passed this by...but not any longer! Can't wait to do this next week...should prove interesting since my forte is drawing stick figures...lol... we shall see...

This is one thing we haven't done. I love the whole animation building. You could honestly spend half a day in there. We have 4 children aged 11, 9, 7 and 5. I can't wait to do this.

raftislander, thanks for the tips! I would never have thought to bring a tube to keep it safe during travel. I didn't realize they were that big. It is great that you have all of the past years saved for you to look back on!

DizneeLuver, thanks for posting the pictures. I had no idea what I thought it looked like, but it wasn't as fun as your pictures If that is your drawing, that is fabulous! I don't suppose they give you a list of the characters for that day?

It's absolutely fantastic! It's one of our favorite parts of DCA.

I cannot draw worth anything and always walk out of the drawing sessions with a very recognizable character that - I - drew!

But do not overlook the other things in the Animation Academy building. "turtle Talk with Crush" is a fun show. The voiceover area is great. Beast's LIbrary is easily overlooked, but shouldn't be. And then there's the mesmerizing zoetrope which is a must see. Or, you can just sit in the main open area and watch scenes from Disney animated movies.

Oh yes. I have always failed Arts miserably in school.

Then we went to Animation Academy. My Donald was a little chubby, but you could definitely recognize him. My Goofy was spot on. That made me realize "hmm... maybe you are not a that hopeless case after all."

I kept trying and meanwhile I am that good that two weeks ago Stitch ran to several restaurant tables showing them the drawing I had made of him when I asked him to sign it.

I agree DizNee Luver that the podium cast member only seems to know the next session. But inside, at the end of the session, the cast member will tell you what is coming up for more than the next session. So if you really want to catch a particular character...ask inside.

My daughter (also 10 years old) and I accidentally stumbled across this the last time we when to DL. My daughter was 8 at the time and absolutely loved it. We are going back in 2 weeks and one of the first things she asked me was "can we do it again?"

Are you sitting in a room with the CM drawing each step of a character, and you also have paper and pencil and are drawing with them? Do you sit or stand? I am having trouble imagining the set-up and

How long are these sessions?


I already know that DH and DD are going to love this. And what a great souvenir!

Everyone is seated in bleacher type seats with a "drawing board". Paper is passed around that fits on the clip on the drawing board. The animator/CM goes through each step and it is shown on a screen in front of the room.

Very fun. Mine never turns out like the animators. My last Daisy Duck looked much like a Loony Toon Marvin the Martian.....wearing a bow.

My DD did it first at about age 7, still loves it at age 11.

Sessions are between 10 and 15 minutes.
