Tell me about ALDI'S

One of my six sisters has always given each of us a box of chocolate truffles for Christmas that are out of this world. A few years back she told us they are from Aldi's.

I shop Aldi a lot. I too keep my quarter in the car or usually my ds puts it in his booster seat cup holder after he gets it back from the cart! I keep my bags right in my trunk so I always have them. You can buy them there; paper for .05 or plastic for .10 and freezer bags for .99. Sometimes I just throw a plastic laundry basket in the trunk and just throw everything from the cart right into the basket. It's then so easy to just carry the basket in from the car.

My boys live on frosted mini-wheats and Aldi brand are only $1.79, pasta sauce .99, graham crackers .99, tub of romano or parmesan shredded cheese $1.79 ($4.99 at my local grocery store) gorganzola crumbled cheese was $1.99, cream cheese bricks .99, boxed mac & cheese (like Kraft, my boys and dh don't mind it, me--yuck! lol) .33, my boys love their moo tubes (yogurt in the tubes) and ice cream sandwiches, their choc bars with almonds are out of this world. I even bought rose bouquets there for Mother's Day for $2.99 (6roses and 4 of another flower in each bunch) and were really pretty/fresh. My dh's brother-in-law is from Germany, where is mother still lives, and that is where they buy all their groceries.

I wish we had them in Texas ...

I'm up at my folks in the Chicago suburbs for a while and I've LOVE Aldi's frozen french bread pizza ... it's under 2.00 for the two and they are YUMMY ..

Also they have (in my opinion) very good chocolate bars... there are some near the register in a blue sleeve .. about 5 little bars to the package .. they're great!

I've mostly purchased heat/eat stuff there ... and 1/2 and 1/2 ... great prices.

I do know, for any of you that this might matter to, that's it's a very anti-union chain. For some, that could be an issue (one way or another). They do offer good wages but only part-time employment for the most part.

Hmmm. Interesting. Whenever there is a strike at the union grocery stores in our area, everyone who doesn't want to cross a union picket line suddenly packs our Aldi store.

Our Aldi's is clean. My favorite and best buy there is spiral ham.
I have been buying it every Christmas for 10 years, and get so many compliments.
I see tomorrow they are having hanging baskets on sale $5.99

We shop at Aldi every week. We don't buy everything there and have to finish up at Jewel - can't live without my Diet Coke!!!

The only thing that we've found hit-or-miss is the produce. Everything else is very good. I usually buy all my ground meat there. They have smoked pork chops that are really good. Otherwise, eggs are eggs, bread is bread, cookies are cookies....

This monthe they had a bunch of Asian food on special...the egg roll;s and general Tsa's chicken were delicious for a frozen meal and the fat was soooo much lower then other products and the real thing! I found ice cream sand for 1.99 a box....I haven't seen this price in a few years! We lucked out and had awesome produce...yummy strawberries, bananas, peppers and mushrooms! Cereal was all 1.79 a box! The bread was .99 a loaf...I didn't love the wheat bread for sandwiches but at that price they were great for hotdogs and made awesome tasting french toast! The packaged deli meats were actually very good! I am somewhat of a food snob and this place really is a great way to get good food cheap! I still go to the grocery store to supplement but as times are getting tight I could live off of aldis food and be ok!

Wanted to post that I really liked their frozen perogis. It was nice for a quick lunch for the kids and me when DH was out of town. Less than $2 per package and very filling with sour cream and a side salad.

Ok I listened to all of you and went to ALDI's today. Just finished a yummy pizza(precooked crust with sauce you add the cheese) and cinnimon sticks. The kids all liked it and so did my DH. Fed my family of 7 for $10! We filled a cart for $114, have to see yet how everything else is. The store was clean and fast to get thru, they may be seeing me alot in the future.:goodvibes

Currently have Aldi in a neighboring town and try to plan a trip for once a month. Supposed to be one opening near me in July. Here are a few of things I always get when I go:

Chicken and Beef Broth (3 cans for .99) Swanson or Butterball is usually $1 a can at my grocery store
Fig and Strawberry Newton type bars .89 same size is $3 at my grocery store
Cereal Bars and Granola Bars $1.49 a box instead of $3
No Calorie Fruit Flavored sparkling water .59 a liter bottle
Cereal like Frosted Mini Wheats and Berry Cheerios under $2 a big box
Ravioli .59 a can

A few things like yogurt, never seems to beat the specials at the regular stores, so you have to know your pricing and know what the deals are.
Also love the Fit and Active frozen fruit for making smoothies or baking.

I have been to quite a few Aldi's when travelling and never run across the dirty ones described. If I did I would report it to Corporate as I don't think that is the way the intend to have things run.

Are these frozen? I looked for them today and didn't see them. I got some nice hanging baskets for $5.99.

never even heard of Aldis until recently when a few people on this board mentioned it, then this thread so I check it out. 1 opened in the next state about 16 miles away from me about a week ago now I can't wait to go check it out!

I live in NJ too, Newton & I am SO excited about Aldi's coming.
We go to Sam's Club in the Trade Zone & Costco in Rockaway, so I can add Aldi's on too. Do you know where the Trader Joe's is going? We go to the one in Florham Park, but that is a little too far. Any idea when Aldi's will open?
Thanks
Lisa

I'm posting without reading what others say ... I really can't stand my local Aldi's. I'm sure that some are nice, but mine is dirty and gross. I don't mind buying off-brands, but I find the Aldi brands to be even more "off" than my local "Roundy" brands. The meat is scary and the veggies are not fresh. I really don't save a whole lot of money when I shop there, and it's probably because I'm fairly fussy.

DITTO! Ours are gross & scary!

Yes, frozen. At my aldis they are in the wall freezers near the ice creams. I think the stores have different inventories.

I just moved to an area that has Aldi's and so far I love shopping there. The food is just as good as I was getting at the Supercenter and its inexpensive, my grocery bill has gone down a bit since I started going there. I like the unexpected items found in the center, like the utility shelving unti I just bought for 8.99.

What a hoot! People are strange, aren't they? LOL

I think Aldi is addictive, like the Disboards! We just got one here in RI a few months ago. I waited for the crowds to die down and went around Easter time. I wasn't overly impressed with the choices, but I was warned about that. What surprised me is how little the store was, literally about the size of a CVS Store.

I bought one package of hamburger (again being warned about bad meat) but the meat was very good for the price, I don't remember what I paid. I also liked their prices on milk, cream cheese and sour cream and eggs. The eggs were about 1 1/2 weeks from expiration, but it was around Easter.

I really liked their frozen stuffed chicken breasts (.99 each) and their chocolate bars were yummy!

Overall you could probably get the same deals if you pay attention to local sale ads, but it was fun and I'm looking forward to going back within a week or so..Off to check out their ad
