Teenagers and Make-up

I have 12 yr old girls. This year 7th grade, (year round school) they wanted to wear mascara, lip gloss and eyeshadow. I said no to the eyeshadow for now. They like the Physicians Formula which you can find at Target, drugstores. No point in spending alot of money at this age, I agree. They are also in cheer so with practice 3 nights a week and games/competitions on Saturday's they don't get to wear it often.

Do your girls also like to wear perfume? I think the nailpolish started around 9!

A great cheap brand is the Ulta store brand. It is often on sale BOGO and they have a ton of colors that you can try on in the store.

I have teenage daughters and in 8th grade they used eye makeup and lip gloss. I tried to convince them to wait on foundation since they had such beautiful skin without it....plus sometimes I have to remind them to wash off the eye makeup before bedtime!

I only went the cheaper brand routes. New styles come around daily in middle school and high school and they will NEED to change weekly just to fit in! Trust me, I have enough make up in this house to cover 25 teenage girls for a year! Save yourself the money and only go to the higher end once they start using foundation!

DSD13 has been wearing makeup on and off for about a year. I just wish that she wouldn't wear eyeliner. She wears it way too heavy, but won't listen when you tell her that. With her eyes, she doesn't even need eyeliner. I keep telling her that eyeliner is evil (I don't even wear it!). WE get omstly Cover Girl stuff, and lots of times when my mom gets freebies from Estee Lauder, she give it to DSD. DSD also likes the Mark line from Avon.

Bare Minerals looks very natural and is easy to apply. Sometimes you can get starter kits on the QVC website, which are a great value. Check around (QVC, Sephora, Bare Escentuals stores) before you buy. I am going through the same thing with my daughter, and she is only going to 6th grade. For now, we've said no, but will go with Bare Minerals when we decide to let her wear makeup. Good luck...I feel your pain!

Thanks for all of the reply's so far. I said yes to the make-up because she takes such good care of her skin. I noticed in 6th grade that she had pimples and bought her neutrogena acne wash, mosturizer, pimple treater, and lotion for her legs. Well she not only does this she also took it upon herself to start using mouthwash. (Tried when she was younger and the fight wasn't worth it if she'd brush her teeth) So I gave in on make-up. I very much appreciate the link for redhead make-up. I am learning so much.

Interesting thread, mostly because my oldest DD is 13 and I don't give a thought to her makeup! She is in a competitive dance company. By the time those girls are 9, they can do full makeup themselves, including liquid eyeliner with "fish tails"! She's much more adept at applying makeup than I am!

I guess because of this, at school she wears little to no makeup, whereas some of her friends wear quite a lot. When she goes out, she'll wear eye shadow, mascara and lip gloss. I agree about not buying expensive stuff. She must have 20 colors of eye shadow and more of lip gloss. I just let her experiment with the colors and don't say much.

One more thing: Even though I don't need to be involved with my daughter's makeup, I really appreciate all of you mothers who are! If you have a clueless older teen, please help her!!! I have very tiny eyes. When I look at pictures of myself as an older teen/young adult, I always wonder, "Why didn't my mom help me with my makeup?"

My neice only wears mascara (she has blond lashes) & if she goes out it'll be lipgloss & maybe eyshadow (she's 15)...she's huge into sports so she can't really wear that much w/o having to scrub it off before daily practices.

Just wanted to give a for MAC! They were great about helping pick out natural looking colors, and showing her how to use them. I know MAC has some pretty out there colors, but they have plenty that are very understated as well!

That is what I have been buying DD since she the beginning at 13 (she's almost 15 now), and we both LOVE it!

The only thing I will not let her wear is eye liner! Other than that, she's really great about sticking to what looks natural.

Oh, and she doesn't use MAC mascera, we like Maybelline Great Lash better!

It's way too much for daily make-up of course, but I was pleased that they didn't go over the top, even with special occasion make-up.

I would reccomend clinique. Depending on your area Hard Candy is actually a line aimed at that age (you can find it online, at Sephora, and at select department stores) and Stila's really cute. I don't know whether your daughter has sensitive skin or allergies. If so, be VERY careful with drugstore brands. When I was twelve, my mom tried me on Cover Girl and Maybelline and I had reaction severe enough she had to take me to the hospital.

Breir Rose you have a beautiful daughter. Her make-up looks fantastic. I think I am going to go with Maybelline for mascara and let her experiment with some others. I will take her to the MAC counter and see what they have and recommend. I recently changed from Clinque to them. I love Clinique but they have a limited color palatte and MAC has more. Also I found their make-up for me stays on longer. I appreciate all the help.

I can't believe a post of mine got 3 pages woohoo.

Thanks again. I am glad to see so many moms are letting their nearly 14 year olds wear make-up I thought it might be to young.
