Teenage dress code

Dear Penny,

Any chance DIS will have the suit pressed so any wrinkles can be removed?

What other people wear on formal night is not my concern. However, next year, when we take a 7 night cruise, my 8 and 5 year sons will be in suits. I have purchased three suits for the boys on ebay for less than $20. The suits were brand new and only worn once. (maybe by previous DCL kids that only wore them for formal night)

Again, I don't care what other people wear. I personally think it is fun for the children to dress-up, and I feel most comfortable with my children in suits.

Hey! I thought I was supposed to be the cheeky one :p ;)

I'll be sure to wear a tie, besides it might work a bit like a scarf in those chilly restaurants!

No, I don't think it was resale, but then it <i>was</i> given to me by my parents so who knows... ;)

You may be a cheeky Brit, but I am a cheeky Irishman.

In fact, I've been called that by a fair share of British birds!

I wear it, like MY birthday suit, as a badge of honor (just don't let the pin stick you!)

This thread has become hilarious!!! I personally wouldn't let what anyone wears "ruin" my cruise, or cruise a different line for that purpose. A note to ducklite: Celebrity is quickly becoming a line with a lot of kids on board. I've cruised with them, without children, and they were EVERYWHERE. I also have many friends with children who also choose to cruise on Celebrity due to the great food they have. Also, when on Celebrity, there were all kind of dress during formal night, and those who weren't dressed approprietely, WERE NOT asked to leave the dining room, they ate like everyone else. By the way, I only saw a few people in tuxes on Celebrity, I actually saw more people in a Tux on our Wonder cruise!!!! A note on what my kids will wear on our Magic Cruise, DD 6 will probably wear one of her princess costumes and DS 3 will most likely wear a button down shirt and pants, since a tie at his age is RIDICLOUS!!! He actually has already worn a tux, when he was in my sisters wedding, but he'll be 3 and I don't think it's necessary!!!

As an FYI--we were discussing teens, not toddlers. IMHO a toddler should wear whatever his parents think are appropriate on formal night.

Thanks for the headsup on Celebrity. We were actually seriously considering Celebrity for Alaska. We're considering going the week after Labor Day, so I don't think there will be too many kids then. But te dress cod eissue does bother me, so perhaps we would be better off looking more seriously at Crystal and Radisson, where I know the dress code is enforced (at least that's what I'm told-if anyone knows differently, please speak up.)

Has anyone cruised to Bermuda on Crystal or Radisson?

It is my personal decision to teach my children to dress appropriately for special occasions. Even when kids were very young there always seemed to be some occasion which called for a suit or sport coat for DS and dressy dress for DD - grandfather's 100th birthday, uncle's 50th year as a priest, sibling's baptism, first Holy Communion, confirmation, kindergarten graduation, 8th grade graduation, etc. Not to count Easter and Christmas services. These are all dress up occasions in our family. I think teaching kids that some occasions are special is a part of teaching them how to live in the world. I wouldn't think twice about buying them the shoes/equipment they need for school sports, why draw the line at nice clothes?

I was always thinking a year ahead and shopping after the season - even daugher's first Holy Communion dress was bought 75% off a year ahead. We made some of her dressy dresses. Some of my son's suits were given to us by our day care mother, some we bought on consignment, some on sale.

That said, I think a dress shirt, tie, dress pants (not dockers) and dark shoes would be appropriate for younger teen. I wouldn't like to see a polo on formal night on anyone over 12. Older teens surely own a blazer to add to the above. It won't spoil my meal no matter what they wear but my DS would feel very out of place if underdressed.

I mentioned polos because I got them at such a deal and figured that is the recommended attire for casual nights. Polo or collared shirt and dress pants.I would not consider dressing them in polos for formal or semi formal night. I agree that kids need to learn to dress up, but everyones idea of dressing up is different as we have seen in this thread. Our church forbids suits for first communion, as well as our Jr high for graduation.....they all have strict NO SUIT policies to make the event more comfortable for those families not able to buy a suit. The whole idea of this is to concentrate more on the sacrament ( for first communion) and less on what everyone wore or how much they paid for it. America needs to stop concentrating on appearances and start appreciating people for who they are not what they wear.

I will never let what people wear insult me.....however behavior and bad manners can spoil a dinner.

This will be the last post on this subject. If anyone joins me on the Wonder and will be insulted if my boys don't wear a suit I suggest you request a table change immediately.

Why not find a cruise board Bulletin Board for THOSE lines and ask there?

It never ceases to amaze me that folks can spend thousands of dollars on a cruise and then complain they are not able to afford appropriate clothing for themselves or their children.

We took an RCL cruise and found that some people though "formal night" meant to "wear the black tee-shirt without the vulgar slogan" versus the black tee shirt with the "F" word on it. Oh and there was the morning breakfast my wife sat across the table from "Viagra Man" (must have bought his wardrobe from NASCAR). Hairy shoulders sticking out of a black muscle shirt is not appetizing!

My boys will wear nice clothes on formal night, even if I pay for a one time wearing.

Ducklite I would reconsider Celebrity. Perhaps the above cruiser went when kids were out of school? When I went (Oct) there were MAYBE 3 children on board. (We did a 10 day cruise too perhaps that was part of it?!)

Celebrity Raddison and Crystal are NO where near the same category. Crystal and Raddison are top.....as well as their prices.. Celebrity is a mainstream line. They are more elegant, a bit more stuffy with wonderful food. I would choose them again in a heartbeat. Then again, I'd also choose RCCL in a heartbeat for it's fun and friendly atmosphere.....because I really don't care what others wear to dinner.

There is no formal night on the Wonder, so there's no reason for you to bring anything more than polo shirts and slacks for any meal, regardless of the age.

Yes, I did cruise when children were out of school. We took a cruise out of NYC to Bermuda, it was the last week of August.

"It never ceases to amaze me that folks can spend thousands of dollars on a cruise and then complain they are not able to afford appropriate clothing for themselves or their children."

Where pray tell did it say YOU were appointed to decide what is APPROPRIATE for someone elses child to wear:confused: The only comments about costs of clothing were by people who debated whether or not to spend hardearned money on clothing that their child will get very little use out of. Their was also a comment by a mother of six kids who stated that it costs a lot. I read nothing where she was complaining about dressing her children appropriately.
The discussion is what APPROPRIATE clothing for teenagers to wear for dinner on a cruise ship for Formal Night. Your opinion of that may differ from others but that does not entitle you to demean others whose definition is not the same.
And while I am at it I found your reference to"viagra man" and his nascar wardrobe offensive also. If you found him so unappetizing then ask to be seated elsewhere. Could it be they were leaving for an early excurson and would not have time to eat and change clothes? Oh I forget, if they aren't dressed according to your standards they aren't entitled to eat in a sit down resturant they should just grab some fruit and take their black t-shirt wearing selves from your sight.

Depite what some think not every one who takes a cruise have few money concerns. Some skimp and save for a long time and MAYBE wearing clothes just to IMPRESS someone else is not important to them. Wouldn't it be nice if they could enjoy themselves without being judged by their clothing?

Gotcha! So I need to wear my birthday suit to breakfast too - minus the tie of course (Note to self: Remember to get chest wax before cruise :p )

Penny I would be HONORED to share my breakfast table with any birthday suit wearing webmaster:p
Provided she did not judge me too harshly if I slurp the milk from my cereal bowl:p :p :p

If they can, what is the charge? Would it be cheaper than total body botox?

Fireplug..I love what you had to say!

Ducklite..I'd go with Radisson. My mother cruised with them and loved it!

Penny!..LOL thanks for the laugh !

You know what i've been on only one cruise. it was a three day cruise. Some of us just don't have the BIG BUCKS to be going out and buying whole new outfits for the trip. Last time i wore nice dress pants and a collared shirt with black sneakers, my dw wore nice slacks and blouse, and dd(4) wore a nice dress. This is what i plan on wearing on are 7 day cruise(might throw a tie on) I'm not much of a dressing up kind of guy. the last time i dressed up really nice was my wedding. So to all the people out there that think u have to look just like them our your going to ruin their cruise all i have to say is too bad. i payed for this and i'm going to wear what i want.

(maybe a nice tanktop and thong on formal night would sound good)
