Teenage dress code

Disneyholic Family,
I don't really mean to start anything here as I'm not the "flaming" type but I feel that your post was very condescending and snobby. There really isn't any need for that type of tone in your posts. I personally was somewhat offended to read it.

Heck don't be Sonya............
In Internet parlance that is what is known as a "troll" :)
And IF by chance that poster is serious be thankful they won't be on DCL. Probably looking around the Sally Ann for the suit she/he was referring to
Cheers,
Grumbo;)

i never complain about being surrounded by a sea of walmart trash wear.....a rather large stretch of the term 'formal wear'....
well actually i do laugh about it a lot....
but that's what we get for sailing on a ship whose only common denominator is disney......once i sail on my own, without the kids, i'll make sure it's with my 'own kind'.....no need for formal wear....walmart specials or otherwise.....a nice casual suit for me will do (albeit one that costs more than some of the dcl passengers make in a year)....and chinos and polo shirts for the kids...

You wear a casual suit that costs $90,000?? Thats the annual income of the average DCL family according to a survey I read once.

Wow, who are you J-LO?

Some people think because they have money that they can make their own rules and are better than anyone else. Like people who let their adult daughters were designer (but expensive jeans) to dinner.

My dear departed mother taught me a very valuable lesson. Just because you have money doesn't mean you have class!

I'll add to those excellent words of wisdom a tidbit from my dearly departed mother...A person with true class has no need or desire to make another person feel like they have none. :D

And, truth be told, DH and I are taking a break from DCL to sail on HAL this fall. We just felt like a change. It is not surprising to me to see that some of the attitudes exhibited here are even more prevalent on other lines. *shrug* To each his own.

I'll be dressed in what I feel is an appropriate manner on formal nights. That certainly does not mean that I will be dripping in sequins and spangles. If my tablemates come in casual attire, why should that bother me? I'm sure the food will taste the same and the conversation will be as good.

Disneyholic Family,
If you're trying to impress - ya just failed. I suggest you go pick up a Webster's dictionary and look up the word class - I *think* your name will not be under it.....

If you're that stinkin' rich - my suggestion would be to go buy a yacht and then you won't be embarrassed by the rest of us "common folk".......

Forgot to answer the question! DS wore khakis and dress shirt, DH wore sport jacket, tie and pants. DD and I wore dress or pant suits.

What is the saying?

Oh yeah--the people who brag about it the most are the ones the least likely to have it.

Well, when you do get to travel with your 'own kind', that's bound to be a mighty lonely cruise. I don't even think Jen and Ben can be considered your 'own kind' after Gigli.

Can you clarify...are you being sarcastic?

Pretty please, tell me you are. :o

First of all let's face it, it is a struggle sometimes to get males of a certain age into "dress up" clothes. My son (14) refused to wear anything other than a black zoot suit for both the semi/formal night and for his confirmation. Assuming I would never find one.

I did find one (cheap) on e-bay, which surprised him. He liked the way he looked and that is all that really matters isn't it? His is planning on wearing it to homecoming so I figure that will be four wearings before he outgrows it.

I've seen folks in tuxes and jeans, gowns and cutoffs, kilts and saris as far as I am concerned it is ALL part of the show.

I could care less if someones clothes came from Walmart and that's what they wore to dinner. As long as they don't reek of B.O. that's ok by me.

Ok here goes..I buy clothes at Walmart! and at Kmart! I can afford them. I also buy clothes for my children and husband there. Nobody complains. I buy my son's suits at Sears, once a year, on sale. His dress shirts come with a clip on tie!!! Now go ahead and flame me!! Oh I'll go one better. Because the kids are growing so fast, before the cruise I go on ebay and buy used summer clothes..that's right..USED!

As far as formal night attire, if my son's suit fits, and it may not, he will wear it. If it doesn't, he will wear what I think is appropriate, not what I think other people want him to wear.

My DD 6, is easy. Her aunt bought her a Cinderella gown to wear. A real gown. Not the Halloween costume kind. She is thrilled and can hardly wait.

I will wear a black dress, Sears, 50% off and fake pearls. Shoes from Payless..

I buy cheap clothes, and cut costs all over the place to be able to take my family on this vacation. I don't care what judgemental people have to say. My life, my money.

Sigh...I wonder what Nate Page will wear?

Ursula

Can you clarify...are you being sarcastic?
No, she wasn't being sarcastic.

And, no Grumbo, she isn't a troll.

She's been posting here a long time and has cruised on the Wonder as part of a land/sea thing once before. I've never heard her express views such as this before and I was stunned to read it. Yes, their family obviously has money but to be so condescending and talk about their "own kind" I just couldn't believe it.

Sigh...I wonder what Nate Page will wear?
Here's a quote from Dreamer04 that helps bring things into perspective.

I am not rich. I do know a family who is rich. They are kind people who have friends from all walks of life. When I go to a party at their home, it's like standing in Times Square, there are so many different people from all economic brackets. All are made to feel comfortable and welcome. Also, I have had the pleasure of their company in my home on many occasions. I have a very middle class home that is VERY "lived in". I have never felt uncomfortable. In fact, they are so well liked, a party at my house isn't the same without them.

I have also had the joy of cruising with them. Yes, they traveled "cat 1", but they didn't look down their noses at anyone. They joined us for dinner every night and on formal night, my DH and myself had only our shorts and tee shirts to wear. (lost luggage, no tuxes left on board..and sorry, but I dont do sequins)

They were not embarrased by us, nor did anyone else make comments on our appearance.

I hope everyone who is concerned about what other people are wearing, is just as concerned about other people's welfare. But, I doubt it.

Now, let's all think about Verandah Man eating shrimp!!

Ursula

I giving the perspective from a teen. I am 13 (well close enough to 14) and both Formal night on my 8/16 cruise I wore a suit with a tie and loafer shoes. I feel that a nice shirt and nice pants are what should be worn every non-formal night to diner and if it were up to me I would not just ask that you not wear them but I would not allow shorts, period, because the idea is to look nice at least thats what I've been thinking. Now back to the suits thing for formal night. I do not feel that unless you already have a suit you don't need a >$200 one. For my Brother we bought him a cheap one from Khols, I think it was like $80 and that should do the trick as well as dress shoes and even I know they are not the best thing to have because you wear them like twice and then they don't fit any more but I managed to squezze in ones 3 sizes too small, hey only wore them for like 4 hours all week, so they work.

This is NOT meant to be offensive to anyone, please don't take it that way!

After reading this thread I'm starting to think that perhaps DCL is not the right cruise for us for next year. While it was a wonderful experience last year, it seems to be getting more and more casual. I would prefer to cruise with people who feel the way that we do, that dressing up is part of the fun, and with a line which requires formal dress on formal night.

So I'm looking for another line to cruise on. Crystal and Celebrity are two that seem that they might be a good fit. If anyone has cruised these, please PM me with your thoughts. Thanks!

Anne

I am sorry you feel that way, ducklite. I do like to dress up, but I would never let anyone else's attire bother me.

I never sailed on those lines, but I did sail on Royal Carribean, Norwiegan, and Costa cruise lines. They all had formal nights, of course. On my Costa cruise, our garment bag was lost and DH and myself had only shorts and tee shirts to wear to the Captains's Gala, which is what they called their formal night. At first, I didn't want to go, but our traveling companions insisted. We did attend and noone said a word about our attire.

Finally, two days later, our garment bag arrived and that night, while everyone else was resort casual, we were formal!! It was alot of fun and very romantic.

A side note--I lost my engagement ring a few months before the cruise and on the night we dressed up, my husband got down on his knee and presented me with a new ring! Isn't that the sweetest thing?

Well, to get back to the thread. Please don't give up on DCL because of clothes. If that is the only reason, then the rest of the cruise should make up for it!

Ursula

K-mart formal wear may be a great idea.

Think about it, how many times to you wear a formal dress/how much it cost. These are the things that really should be gotten on sale since there is no chance of them wearing out.

As for us on the last cruise my formal dress was a hand me down from a friend's daughter and the semi formal dress was purchased eight years ago at an Anne Kline outlet. Husband's suit was the one he wore as best man in his brothers wedding 11 years ago.

As for the teen daughters, they (along with most of their friends) shop the post prom sales. I know that one of her dresses was a whole $14 from Macy's since I paid the bill for that one.

And no I don't have any problem shoping "vintage clothing, outlet or sales for both myself and my family." The point is you can look good at a reasonable price, but it does take some effort.

With the money I save, I go one more cruises.

Now as for the lady in the cat 1 room, I am hoping she just was having a really bad day. Otherwise by all means she should take the option of eating in grand spendor in the room. I would hate to ruin her cruise experience in my hand-me-down finery. BTW Nordstrom had tropical shirts for guys at $100 a pop yesterday. Maybe she should stock up for the next cruise.;)

I believe a young man, below college age looks just fine in a nice pair of chinos, (wal-mart or otherwise) with a nice polo shirt.

I believe the Waltons are the richest family in the world. If that is the WalMart trash referred to, count me in.

I believe ee cummings was the last literate person to type without capitalization.
