Teenage dress code

I'm looking for another line to cruise on.
Well ducklite if the attire of the others does bother you to the point of spoiling your cruise yes then it is time to look for another cruise line.
Wearing a business suit and dress etc is a "part" of the fun for me and my wife and daughter. A very small "part" for our family, but as has been stated before NOT something that will bug or bother me if others don't want to partake.
It will be interesting to see if you do in fact continue to cruise DCL or go to the more formal cruise lines. DCL is a wonderful experience and as a good friend of mine says "You have to pick which hill is worth dying on". To stop taking DCL cruises because of the dress of others isn't a hill I'd want to pick but to each their own :)
Oh and I didn't take offense to your post at all;)
Cheers,
Grumbo

It's not just what people are wearing, it's more the entire attitude of "it's my vacation and I'm doing whatever I want" attitude that seems to be permeating DCL these days.

Where does it end? With that type of attitude, what's the difference between dressing appropriately for dinner and smoking in the cabin? Or letting your kids play on the elevators? Or taking your one year old in the adult pool area hot tub, wihtout a swim diaper no less? Or any other things which oviously aren't appropriate but people will do because DCL won't stop them, or doesn't monitor enough until others complain. I'd rather spend the money for a cruise where the line doesn't give mixed signals. If DCL isn't going to enforce a formal night, why do they offer one?

The more we have looked at other lines this morning, the more we are seeing that we can spend a lot less and know that the line will enforce their policies

Anne

Ducklite, I know I should just let this die, but I can't. First there is a difference between rules and a suggested dress code.

Also, if you want to avoid unruly children, I would stay away from Royal Carribean, Norwiegan, and Costa cruise lines. On all of them I saw kids running around like they owned the place. Fighting, cursing and all the rest. Especially teenagers. Apparantly the "kids clubs" on these ships are pretty boring.

Also, I wasnt kicked out of the dining room on a Costa Cruise for wearing what I had, and I'm sure the matre'd was not aware of our missing luggage.

But, in any case, whereever you decide to go, I hope you have a great time!

Ursula

Which is exactly why none of those three are even being considered. Celebrity, Crystal, and Radisson are the lines we're considering at this point.

Anne

From what I've read, Crystal is the most "formal". White glove all the way. Have a great time!

I am assuming ducklite that you only have one child to provide for? If you were me you might have a little different opinion. You see ducklite, I have 4 boys and 2 girls. For us to so much as GO ON this cruise it is costing me literally THOUSANDS of dollars. I do have a couple suits for my boys that have been given to me, but I would not consider going out and buying a new suit to wear for one or 2 dinners. My kids do however own dress pants, dress shirts and ties as well as dress shoes. I think that is entirely appropriate for pre-teens and young teens. I would never consider taking them to dinner looking like ragamuffs.....but to say a young man does not look presentable in a shirt and tie is ridiculous. Disney is a family organization. This means ALL families should be welcome.......even the ones who can't afford to buy all their children a suit to wear to dinner.

Well put, Hlfdzn.

PS Now I understand what your name means--half-dozen!! Very cute! Also, I wanted to say that I am a little envious of you. I have just 2 children and have always prayed for more, but it seems that it snt meant to be. I am grateful for the people in my life. I don't mean to sound petty. But, God bless you and your children. You sound like a wonderful parent!

It was your choice to have that many children, the cost of vacations, education, and everything else that many with large families complain about, should have been thought about before you decided to continue to grow your family. That argument is just absurd when it was your choice to have a large family.

I do have sympathy when someone takes in children of family members or dear friends for whatever tragic reason, but it doesn't appear that this is your situation.

Thanks you dreamer04 for the blessings...... We truly have been blessed. My kids are not perfect, but pretty good most of the time. This brings me to my final comment on this thread. I would much rather have dinner with children who are dressed in dress shirts and dress pants and a tie than a child in a tux or suit who is a brat. Nothing spoils my dinner more than a disrepectul kid....not matter how they are dressed.. I also prefer them to be clean. Clothes do not make the man. Since I am sailing on the Wonder I guess this is not an issue, but if I were forced into buying a suit for my boys it would most likely come from a resale shop. I bet ducklite would not be able to tell who paid retail and who shopped resale. I have already bought and put away new polo shirts I got for my boys at Target ( gasp) for about $3.00 each. I want them to look nice for the cruise, so I packed them away so they won't wear them. I intend to make this a memorable experience for my kids.

I am the sinlge father of a DS13 and we are headed out to next weeks MAGIC cruise. I have enjoyed reading this thread and laughing at alot of the comments today. I actually can see both sides of the arguement. To say you are not having a good time, or it bothers you just to see someone wearing what you consider to be low class clothing to dinner is snobbish. Neat and formal is one thing, to have all teens wear tuxes is another. What teen doesn't want to look nice for dinner to impress the opposite sex?? I would think that many a parent have been prying their teens from the mirror to get to dinner or the pictures before on the Magic. My son will be wearing dress pants and a nice shirt and tie on formal night. He will probably spend quite a long time on his hair, alot more than his dad since I don't have much left.
His father will be wearing a suit. Although the first Magic cruise we took two years ago, I was told by the travel agent Disney is all casual, so I didn't even bring pants on board. Didn't know of these boards and felt a bit under dressed. Last cruise my son brought a friend and they both liked to dress up for formal night to impress the girls.

However one point that has been brought up that I do agree upon is that some kids attitudes need alot to be desired. I have seen kids using the elavators as their personal ride all night. Running around and getting into mischief on board, and generally being disrepectful to others on board. Believe it or not these kids have been dressed to the nines. Now this is not to say my little one is totally innocent, but I won't allow him to misbehave if I was to see or hear of it.

What I have come to conclude clothes don't make the man! or the teen! To me behavior is the determining thing in wheather or not I enjoy my meal. If the teens are behaving then all is fine, not what someone is wearing! I am looking at all the good food that I am eating not worring about what the Jones teen is wearing at dinner. Just had to add my 2-cents.

I have said my piece and will ignore your rude thoughts about my family. I actually think you may be a tad bit jealous. As I said before, the thousands of dollars it cost us for this vacation took years to save. I would not consider putting it off due to my boys not owning a suit, that is just ridiculous. You do the math.....4 suits x $100 each........thats a day at Disney for me! I would rather go to Disney! Oh...and I do NOT COMPLAIN about the expenses for raising a large family. I have been fortunate enough to have stayed home with my children ( my choice, quit when my 1st child was born). I don't take government aid, I own a house and my kids are happy. I just think some peoples priorities are screwed up. To assume that just because kids wear a dress shirt and pants instead of a suit, also means they are going to be unruly is in your words ABSURD! I will reiterate what I said about behavior...as long as the kids are well behaved and don't smell, why judge them on what they are wearing. Please don't judge me again for choosing to have 6 kids.......I did have twins and I feel very lucky.

Well ducklite I promised myself I wouldn't get involved in this, but here it goes.If you really think that you are not going to find that attitude on other cruise lines, then you are living in a dream world. I don't care where you go in this world or how much money you spend you are going to see this attitude just about everywhere you go. More of the attitude some places then others but it will be there. I have stayed in the cheapest resort up to the most expensive resorts and let me tell you I found better behaved people in the cheaper resorts then the expensive ones. I have to agree that DCL is at fault for not addressing situations that occur. But I see this more and more everywhere I go. It seems nobody wants to get involved. Just about every vacation I went on I had to just get up and walk away from people doing things that they shouldn't. Just have to learn to ignore it and life goes on. Can't believe my question caused this much of a debate.

Well ducklite, life is too short so you need to do what makes you happy. Good Luck with whatever you decide.

I have MANY times on these boards suggested looking for formalwear at resale shops and the sale racks at JCPenney.

I'll be honest, I haven't bought my son a suit at a resale shop--there just aren't any convenient to where I live, but I'm always looking for good sales at other stores, and do'nt think I've EVER paid full price for a suit for him--I usually like to head ofr JC Penney's the week after Easter when suits can be marked to 75% off.

I don't shop at Target--the carpeting gives me a headache, but I've picked up things at Wal-Mart and Burlington Coat Factory and Kohls. I NEVER suggested that anyone buy an Armani for their teen. In fact IF YOU'D GO AND READ, I suggested BORROWING a suit or jacket from a friend or naighbor.

You all need to learn to read before yous tart bashing.

I was one of seven. I chose to have one child, no more. My choice. I am not at all jealous, if I wanted another child or three I would have had them.

I also never said that teens not following DCL's suggested dress would be unruly, I think you need to reread my comments from the beginning.

I don't see how my comments about your family were at all rude, rahter it seems that You are the one being rude and accusing me of saying things I haven't said.

Also, I've NEVER paid $100 for a suit for my son--look on the sale racks, you can usually find them for around $25. or you can borrow one, or find one of E-Bay or in a consignment shop.

Okay you all! Stop fighting. I admit that I do enjoy a good controversy here and there, but this one has reached it's limit. As my mom would say let's just agree to disagree, because from my point of view no one will be able to convince the other that they are right!

Ok..I'm done!! Take care all, no matter where you go or what you wear. Cherish your children.

Sincerely,

Ursula

I know I'm not a teenager, but would anybody object if I came to dinner in my birthday suit? ;)

LOL Penny! Just make sure you wear a tie!!

You can go to dinner like that at Orient beach in St Maarten and not feel out of place at all. Might be a bit chilly in some of the Magic restaurants.
