Tear Stains around dogs eyes

We have a yorkie mix who is light in color(tan) He gets should dark tear stains around his eyes and sometimes they get clumpy. When he gets groomed they cut that area short and it looks better. Can anyone recommend a product or procedure to use or do to eliminate these? It's so frustrating because he is such a cutie but when they are bad he looks like a mess

I have a white toy poodle with eye problems. Her problems cause massive tearing. Besides using "Angel Eyes", I wash her face daily and my groomer keeps her closely shaved on her face. The clumps can be very irritating. I don't know if this really works but I also read that filtered water helps (some of the minerals in hard water cause the red stains), so when I fill the bowl I just use the filter and not the regular tap.

My neighbors have a white maltipoo and they swear by Angel Eyes. Apparently tear stains were a huge issue before they found this product in a Sky Mall catalog and decided to try it out.

If you do try Angel Eyes, they mentioned that their dog does not like the taste of the product. They learned to mix it into beef broth and their dog is now super-excited to have its "special treat"!

My vet (who is a friend of mine) told me to use tetracycline powder instead of Angel Eyes (expensive). She gave me a small pill bottle of tetracycline powder to mix with my yorkie's food. I used just a tiny pinch twice a day for a few days, and his eyes cleared up immediately. Another thing I had read about was to feed distilled water for clearing up eye stains on dogs, so I only give my dog distilled water to drink. I can't swear which worked on the dog, the distilled water or the tetracycline, because I began using them both at the same time, but his eyes cleared up and I've only had to use the tetracycline twice in the past two years. I would try giving distilled water first and if that doesn't work, ask your vet for some tetracycline powder and give it a try. I think the little pill bottle cost me less than $5, which compared to the price of Angel Eyes, was quite a bargain!

Two bichons here-one with terrible staining. Another vote for angel eyes. Works like a charm-no issues anymore.

No red dyes in food or treats either. worked great on my lhasapoo then we gave her treats with red dye and back the stains and clumps came.

What a cutie...His face is the exact color as mine. The rest of him stays clean but around the eyes UGH! Thanks for everyone's input. I'm gonna start to switch the water tomorrow and go from there.

I have mentioned it to the vet we go to (and love) and I don't think he will go for the tetracycline powder. He really believes in treating things naturally as much as he can. I will mention it again next time we go and see what he says. Thanks.

your not alone my little one cries for everything he is a total baby. I wipe his eyes often and keep them trimmed. I've been told it could be diet but vet says its just that hes just a cry baby not to worry about it =( . What can I do? He really is a happy dog but if he doesn't get what he wants he cries like a little kids do. I hate to admit it but it works he gets everything he wants.

I've checked everything in his diet and so it's not food related. When you say you wipe his eyes often, what are you using to do this? Our vet pretty much said the same thing and won't give anything since it really is just cosmetic.I really thought I would be the one to spoil him but noooo...my husband is such a softy when it comes to him!!! They can be pretty irresistable!!

I use sterile saline on a soft paper towel and when I give him a bath I use an ointment my vet gave me just for that purpose. I tried to read the bottle but the label is long gone from getting it wet. I know its supposed to prevent irritation. I've noticed a huge difference from trimming back his hair around his eyes. Your little one is so cute. I need to figure out adding pictures on here.

I have an almost 3 year old yorkie. We had the same problem. It drove me crazy. I tried everything...wiping everyday, distilled water & bottled water. None of these things worked. What finally solved the problem was 'angel eye'.
