Team Renfroe - Pre-Trip Report for May 15-22, 2009 **Final Chapter**

Well, based on your TR we decided to change our H&V's ADR for one at the Brown & Derby. We have read some nice things about it, so maybe you would like to consider it if planning to visit DHS.

Also, several years ago (2000) I had the opportunity to visit the Liberty Tree Tavern, and have wonderful memories of their New England Clam Chowder, a dish I'm particularly fond of. I know it is a long shot, but that is the reason I'm including a visit to this restaurant during my September trip.

Regards,

Luis

Hello Luis! I am excited for you as your trip is quickly approaching!

I would love to do the Brown Derby, but I may do it out of pocket. I know that I would order the famous Cobb Salad...and I don't think that would be worth 2TS credits on the Dining Plan. SO....either I pay out of pocket for Brown Derby, or use 1TS credit for Mama Melrose. (Then again, I am eating at Tony's Town Square, which is also Italian.) SO MANY CHOICES!!! :confused3

Good morning Alan!

I totally know how you feel about Chefs de France; I was the same way. We had eaten at every TS in WS except for that one because I feared the my DD wouldn't find anything on the menu. But I really, really wanted to try it so we went this year and DD was fine. I can't remember what it was called on the menu (something very french-sounding), but this is what she ordered:

DSC02682.jpg

Yep - chicken fingers with plain pasta - two of her favorite things. And, I believe I read this somewhere on the Dis (and maybe someone out there can confirm) but I thought that regardless of what was on the menu, any Disney restaurant can make chicken fingers, mac&cheese, or pizza for the kids. I loved my meal at Chefs and definitely would go again.

As for your other choices: Chef Mickeys - Hmmm, what to say? It should definitely be experienced at least once; the atmosphere is alot of fun. But I think it's way overpriced - have not been happy the past two times we've gone for dinner. That being said, I hear breakfast is the best of the meals.

Flying Fish - haven't been in a few years, but very, very good! I think that one may be a 2TS credit also.

We've been to Mama Melrose's a few times; it's the TS we choose when we want to book the Fantasmic dinner package. We've always enjoyed it - although I know it gets criticized alot around here. Brown Derby is very good also - just pretty expensive.

Oh, and the Rose & Crown - one of our favorites. I always get the fish & chips also and think they're delicious! What makes us enjoy that place so much is the staff. We've always lucked out and have gotten the friendliest servers; and the beer is not too bad either!

Thanks for the birthday wishes! And if there's anything you want to know about DVC - just post the question and I'll try to answer it if I can. I've been a member since 2000, must admit though, it was my ex who handled the business side of the transaction; I managed the membership. It's all mine now though - I got the DVC in the divorce settlement - :woohoo: !

We've always gone value and have never regreted it, rather go more often than not! That said, we're probably a bit different -- we just got back from Banff Canada, 4 people (3 of them 6 ft tall - guess who isn't ;) )driving from MN in a Prius!! Looking forward to seeing your plans come together! We liked Chef Mickeys (1999 trip so it's been a while and it was right for the kids ages then (9 and 5)). We also like Earl of Sandwich and it's on our Oct wish list!

Love the pix I would never have known which was youDD if you hadn't explained:rotfl2:

Here goes Alan on your choices of new restaurants

Le Chefs I also had dinner there and loved it, it is a little "refined" but your gorgeous children would be little angels !! I had the shrimp and scallops which were delish for dessert I had the apple crepes which are my favorite dessert in WDW now .
I love CP but have only had dinner there , they have peel & eat shrimp..Yum
I had dinner at Mama Melroses and it was okay the steak was fine and the polenta was okay, Tiramusu was gooooood!
Can't comment on others as haven't been, but I do intend to try Kona after your reviews and I want to try Boma for breakfast. I think DD and DW will enjoy Pooh at CP. I go there solo and don't feel strange at all!
I have to decide when I am going solo next year I am so undecided, I really want to go when other Dissers are and yet I also want to go for my birthday in March!!

Well, I had to explain who my DD was because, if not, you guys and gals would be forever wondering how I would look like!!

Awesome post, Cammie. Thanks for your input on the restaurants we are considering. Of all the ones we've not yet been to, I am most certain about Artist Point. We really like the sit-down-and-be-served restaurants with amazing food. That's why I think we would like the Flying Fish also. Plus, it is at the Boardwalk - and we've never been to your beloved Boardwalk!! We may have to eat at the Flying Fish just to go to the Boardwalk! Speaking of which, how is Spoodles? It gets mixed reviews here on the boards.

Glad to know you like Les Chefs de France and Mama Melrose. On Chef Mickey's, it would be for breakfast only...and even then just mainly for the characters.

Also, have you ever eaten at Citricos at the Grand Floridian? Their menu looks yummy! Gosh, I hope we can afford the Deluxe plan again....otherwise, I'm in big trouble!

On the DVC, I actually honestly know nothing. I don't even know enough about it to formulate a question. I assume that it is like a timeshare thing?

Alan

Hello readers! I just wanted everyone to know that the Renfroes are on the way to Florida's Gulf Coast!! It is almost 3am here now, and I've just gotten in from my gig tonight. We leave for Florida in 6 hours!

I'll take some photos on this trip and will share them when we get back. I won't be posting any replies while I'm gone, but I'll be back on Friday or Saturday!

Have a great week, everyone! Here's hoping we have a great trip! It's not Disney World, but it will still be fun. Fresh seafood is calling me! :thumbsup2

Hi Alan, love the new "family truckster". I've been driving a crv for the last 4 years and love it--can't go wrong with a honda!

You mentioned in a previous post that you weren't sure about trying Spoodles. We ate dinner there in 1998 for my 23rd b-day and hadn't been back until last May (2007). We went there for breakfast with our friends and their two kids as well. It was hands down the best meal of our trip. The service was excellent, food cooked to perfection--it was a breakfast that we need to repeat. I say try it--if not for dinner, at least for breakfast-- all 8 meals that were ordered at our table were delicious.

By the way--we're delving into the realm of value resorts next month (we've always stayed deluxe or mod) - it will be interesting to see how they compare after being totally spoiled at the CR and BC last year (we got free room upgrades at both those resorts last year).

Have a great time in the gulf coast.

Hope you're having a great time at the beach!! :beach:

Being the foodies we are, the Gris...uh...Renfroes are all about eating out...especially on vacation....especially at DISNEY!!

Me too!!!! So many options! Ironically I am most excited about trying a counter service on my upcoming trip -- Earl of Sandwich. Haven't decided for what meal yet but I've heard nothing but positives about it. I also may be trying Chefs de France or Flying Fish so I'll fill you in. ;)

....we want to try some new things this time! As wonderful as our last trip was, we don't want to repeat it...we want to expand upon it! :cool1:

That's the hardest part, isn't it?! Fitting in all the favorites that were so great and then also trying all of the places that you're dying to try!

Your DS seems to be quite a foodie... does he have any thoughts as to where he'd like to dine? I love that he has already mentioned he wants to repeat the father/son dinner at Tony's...:goodvibes

Hey Clark! Great to see that we all influenced you to start immediately with a PTR! We have stayed at both POP and All Star Music and both were great. We chose ASMu last year as all the rooms had just been rehabbed and it is a little quieter and less busy than other all star resorts. We also subscribe to the philosophy that we are only in the room to sleep and therefore the extra 500 bucks for a mod is not really worth it. However, we had originally booked POP for this year but changed to POFQ then finally to CSR which by looking at your pics is beautiful! We'll see if it's worth it. Both of us really love the look of the BWI which makes me very jealous of Cammie and her DVC! Also, wanted to mention that due to your rave review and yummy photos of Kona Cafe, I cancelled Raglan Road and booked there instead! Mmm...sticky wings. We also did Mama Melrose last year and have booked it with the fantasmic package again this year as DBF really enjoyed it. I thought it was good, but not fabulous. Sorry this post is so long, but my only other input is to try Jiko at AKL. It is 2TS but worth it! I don't see a lot of people review it but we went there the past two years and it was fabulous, especially the filet and pistachio creme brulee! The only reason we didn't book it this year was to avoid the pain of going from resort to resort, but again, your reviews of Kona changed that! And don't worry, I won't blame you if it doesn't live up to my expectations! I can't wait to hear what else your are planning and I hope your enjoy your other trips this summer! :goodvibes

~Beka~

Hey there, Alan, so glad you're back with a Pre-Trip, I loved your last TR! :yay: :cool1: So glad you're definitely heading back! :woohoo: Sounds like you're having an awesome summer so far!! :thumbsup2

Anyway, it must be fun not knowing what resort you'll be at quite yet! If you do decide to switch it over to a different mod, we are in love with Port Orleans French Quarter, but then again, the Values are great too! You really can't go wrong on Disney property.

Looking forward to hearing about your latest vacation! :worship:

Hey Alan!
Sorry it's taken me so long to reply!
Hope you're having fun in Florida... all beit if it's not WDW!

To answer your question a van in the UK looks something like this...

Very different to your van as you can see! I love the differences between the meaning of words in the UK and USA!!

I see you are from Kent also Disney Jo is also from Kent , me I'm from Bury St Edmunds !!

oooh very nice, I always wondered if you were English due to your name but then your location tells a different story!!!
Yer DisneyJo and I are from more or less the same area, we had 'our first meeting' on another TR, took over the thread for a bit with our discovery!! :rotfl:

Alan - Hope you and your family are enjoying your week at the beach!

I'll pm you when you get back if you want any info on the DVC; don't want to get into trouble posting it here on your pre-trip.

I know a pp raved about the Spoodles breakfast. While I never had breakfast there myself, friends of mine have and raved about it also. The menu looks really good. I say give it a try - whether it's for breakfast or dinner. People on these boards have such different tastes; I try to give each place a chance and form my own opinion. Take San Angel Inn - I know that place is not well-liked at all around here, yet it one of our favorites. It's our traditional first night dinner. Then again, I approach each meal with low expectations - I'm just so darn happy to be in Disney; I'll find something to like in just about any restaurant.

Do you have any plans to go to DTD? There's alot to be seen there also. We schedule one night there every trip. Fulton's, Portabello's, Raglan Road, Goofy's Candy Co., Ghiradelli's, the shopping - I could go on and on!

Hi Alan! I'm subbing! I just stared my way too far from away PTR so I thought I'd follow along with yours since you guys are going around the same time.

Love your new van! I'm in the market for a new one sometime in the next 6 months.

Hi Alan,
Right about now you are probably swimming in the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. You lucky dog! I grew up in Galveston, TX so I know those waters well and miss the beach terribly.
This week I had to leave Aaron at home to work on unpacking stuff in the new house while I am at a conference in Columbia, SC. I hate staying by myself in hotels so I am taking this time to start making my own Disney lists for May. It is pretty rough right now but so far I am thinking of doing several of the same ones as you either did last year or are planning to do this year.
Oh, but by the way, I wanted to tell you that this year we did Tusker House in AK for breakfast and it was great. There were several African inspired dishes like you mentioned Boma had but the characters there were great and when they passed out the instruments and the kids all went to dance with Donald and friends Josh even forgot to be a moody 9 year old who was "too old for stuff like that!" That is one of the places we want to do again.
And also Earl of Sandwich is amazing! Even Josh's plain turkey and cheese with nothing else on it was good but the original was YUM YUM YUM!
If you have the chance try it and then get a Ghiradelli treat for dessert if you have room left.

Hey everyone! We got back last night from our trip to the beach this past week. I'm uploading some photos to share in later posts. We had a nice time, but nothing compared to WDW!

Alan

Hi Bibbidi! We are loving the new Honda also. I have always wanted to own a Honda...they have a great reputation for building vehicles that last.

I really like the looks of the menu at Spoodles, but lots of people on these boards have negative things to say....so it is hard to tell. I'm seriously thinking we will give the breakfast a try. Some friends of ours ate there for breakfast on their trip in May and they really liked it.

I think the value resorts will be a different experience. If we were staying at a deluxe, I would probably spend more time at the resort and less in the parks. (That sounds ideal for an adults-only trip.) However, I think for our family at this point the value resort should be fine. I'm like you...I like to be spoiled! And I don't mind paying for luxury. You'll have to let us know how your experience was....by the way, which value will you be staying at?

Hope you're having a great time at the beach!! :beach:

Hi Christine! We did have a great time at the beach - but not nearly as much fun as Disney!

I am actually thinking about possibly dropping back to just doing the basic dining plan. The deluxe plan was AWESOME, but it was SOOO much food! Even for foodies like us, it was really too much. If we go with the basic dining plan, we can still pay out of pocket for some meals and we may come out a little better. I definitely think you get your money's worth out of BOTH dining plans, but we might save a little by doing the basic plan this time. Anyway, if we do the basic plan, that will mean finding good CS meals. The Earl of Sandwich would be a great choice, I think.

DS says that his favorite two meals at Disney were Tony's and California Grill. I think he liked Tony's for the theme and atmosphere as much as the food...not to mention the father/son thing. If we do California Grill again....I'm sorry.....WHEN we do California Grill again, I think I'll get him to try the California roll! He's such a foodie, he may be ready for some cooked sushi!

Hey Clark! Great to see that we all influenced you to start immediately with a PTR! We have stayed at both POP and All Star Music and both were great. ~Beka~

Hi Beka! Hope all is well with you!

We are leaning towards staying at the Pop for this trip. If we were going to do the All-Star, it would be Music. (I am a musician on the weekends...and an overall music FREAK!)

Hahaha....I'm jealous of Cammie and her DVC points also! That might have to be something to look into for the future.

You will LOVE CSR. It is very nice...and you really feel like you're on "vacation." We loved the dig site pool and Jaguar slide. The Pepper Market is cool also.

I've heard good things about Raglan Road, but I KNOW that Kona is terrific. We just ate at a place in Destin, Florida this week called McGuire's Irish Pub. I've never eaten at Raglan Road, but I imagine that it would be similar to McGuires. It was VERY good! I'm thinking we may have to add Raglan Road to our wish list for our next trip. However, Kona will be a priority! Two words: STICKY WINGS!!!! :lovestruc

I would like to try Jiko, but it doesn't appeal to DW & DS....so I think I would be voted down on that one. Maybe I can weasel a "company trip" to the Orlando area sometime and eat at Jiko on the expense account! :rolleyes1

Hey Figment's Friend! Glad you're here for the pre-trippie! I loved doing the trip report so much, I just had to continue the fun!

If we decide to do a different moderate, it would be POFQ. DW and kids have never been to New Orleans...and I LOVE New Orleans! Also, we've got some dear friends who stay there regularly and love it. They like to eat at Boatwright's. Do you know if they have good seafood gumbo there? I LOVE me some gumbo!

This much I do know.....we WILL be staying on Disney property. It is totally worth it to feel like you are AT DISNEY the entire trip. Just going to the parks is great, but staying on property really creates the magic. :wizard: I'm all about the magic!

Hey Alan!
Sorry it's taken me so long to reply!

COOL! I've been hoping you would post a picture of a van in the UK! I was telling some of my extended family that our new vehicle would not be considered a van in the UK, but rather a car. You're right....it is so cool how words can mean different things in different societies! That's why EVERYONE should travel! :thumbsup2

Alan - Hope you and your family are enjoying your week at the beach!

I'll pm you when you get back if you want any info on the DVC; don't want to get into trouble posting it here on your pre-trip.

Hi Cammie! We had a nice time at the beach. I'll post some pictures and highlights soon....then its back to Disney talk! By the way, I just finished reading your last posts on your trip report - you did an outstanding job!! What a special time you had with your youngest DD! That's so cool!

Feel free to PM me the info on DVC. It is probably not something that I can budget at this time, but I still would like to have the information. I'm definitely very interested in finding out all about it. I don't know if by "getting in trouble" posting it here means by moderators or what.... but it is definitely something I'm interested in discussing.

I think we'll try Spoodles for breakfast, if for no other reason than to be at the Boardwalk! If money were no object, I think I would absolutely LOVE the Boardwalk. I like the theme. I also like Wilderness Lodge.

You definitely have the RIGHT ATTITUDE about your time at Disney! I approach it the same way. I don't build up heavy expectations....I just go with the flow and have fun. I don't expect everything to be perfect, I just make the most of any situation. San Angel pictures look SO good, and we all love Mexican food. There is just so much to try at Epcot, it's really hard to pick one thing over another. Is San Angel considered to be Counter Service? If so, if we decide to go with the basic dining plan instead of the deluxe dining, I would definitely make ADRs for San Angel.

I'm sure we'll go to DTD on our trip. I think we'd like Raglan Road. We went to Goofy's Candy Company on our last trip and loved it. On the deluxe dining plan, we had like 34 snack credits left on our last day....so we went to Goofy's Candy Company in style!! Those hand-dipped pretzel rods were awesome!

Hi Alan! I'm subbing! I just stared my way too far from away PTR so I thought I'd follow along with yours since you guys are going around the same time.

Love your new van! I'm in the market for a new one sometime in the next 6 months.

Hey DisMomAmy! Welcome aboard! At first I thought this pre-trippie was way too far out, but now I can see it will go faster than you think! I will hop over to your pre-trip report and subscribe.

Thanks for the compliment on the van! We are loving it! I got 24 miles per gallon on our trip down to the Florida Gulf Coast this past week, then I got 19 miles per gallon while at the beach. I was very pleased with that. We also liked the Nissan Quest, but I think ultimately we both wanted a Honda.

Hi Alan,
Right about now you are probably swimming in the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. You lucky dog! I grew up in Galveston, TX so I know those waters well and miss the beach terribly.
This week I had to leave Aaron at home to work on unpacking stuff in the new house while I am at a conference in Columbia, SC. If you have the chance try it and then get a Ghiradelli treat for dessert if you have room left.

Hi Michelle! I've been to Galveston and it is beautiful.

How dare you run off to SC and leave Aaron with all the unpacking? You gotta love conferences! I'm hoping the organization for which I am a part will hold a conference in Orlando in the near future!

The Tusker House breakfast sounds interesting. That may be an option instead of Boma. We did the Boma breakfast and it was really good....but I want us to have new experiences on our next trip. As much as I loved the Boma breakfast, I'd be willing to try something new.

Eating at the Earl of Sandwich will be a definite if we do the basic dining plan. I think it is a great CS value.

Hope you're having a great trip! I'll be posting some pics from our beach trip soon.

Alan

Wooohoooo it's "Team Renfroe Take 2" :cool1: , Hi Alan :wave2: wow you've been busy since your return from the world ;) , so glad your working on your next trip :goodvibes. Nice car :thumbsup2
On your question re: meals, Chef Mickey seem's to becoming one of our family traditions, we've only ever done breakfast and always enjoyed it, apart from my dad last year mixing Pluto & Goofy up :rolleyes1 My DD's thought this was highly amusing . Earl of Sandwich is great, especially before or after a shopping marathon at DTD ;)
Hope you and your family are all well & look forward to reading more of your PTR. :thumbsup2
